Since I had enough points in my account in either case, it did not seem to be an issue when I called MS to book a reservation and cancel two others, so I booked first and cancelled second....big mistake. Fortunately it all worked out in the end but not until a supervisor was called in to "fix it."
You see, some of my points were banked points AND I was booking a ressie for Disney Collection...not a regular DVC WDW resorts. I thought that once everything was completed, MS would use up all of my banked points first and I would be left with current year points.
But, since I had already booked the Collection ressie on current year points, when I went and cancelled the existing ressie, I was left with banked points and MS could not or would not switch everything around to allow me to use the banked points first. This is a very simplistic explanation and I will admit that I still do not completely understand why I was getting whipsawed, but fortunately I asked the reservation person about my points and when she said they were banked...well... that's when the supervisor got involved...
I consider myself a semi-veteran when it comes to DVC, but I will readily admit that sometimes the use of points by MS is just much to confusing and frought with too many land mines for the people to properly understand.
