Hi everyone. I take Bonine so I can go on all of the "big person rides" (), but it makes me really sleepy! Does anyone else have this problem? Have you played with what time of day you take it? The one I take is 24hrs, and I tend to get sleepy at 2 times during day- about 3 or so hours after I first take it, and then again about 4 hours after that. Has anyone taken it in the evening? Does it help keep you more awake during the day? Does the effectiveness still seem to hang on for 24 hours?

THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE! :goodvibes

I take it to fly but I don't need it for rides. I take a non-drowsy formula and over the years have adjusted my dosage to what works for me. Trial and error. I take 1/2 the listed dosage.

Oh and one time in Hawaii (didn't want to take a pill) we went out on a boat and I used those wrist band things (they put pressure on a certain spot to control nausea). You might go to a pharmacy and ask about them OR look for the non-drowsy formula of Bonine/Dramamine.

"Sea Bands" can be found near the motion sickness pills at most pharmacies (last time I bought them at Wal-Mart). We keep a pair in the car for the rare occassions DD12 feels queazy on a road trip - works great for her. She also always wears them when we fly (sometimes I do too).

Motion sickness medication actually isn't "non drowsy" but LESS DROWSY. I don't think they make "non" but a lot of people call it that.

At Disney (or whenever I travel) I take 1 "Less Drowsy" 24-hour Dramanine before going to bed and since it lasts 24 hours, I'm good until the following night. I also take a ginger capsule with the Dramamine because ginger is supposed to help too. I don't take any chances, but also don't want to be drowsy at Disney! :thumbsup2

Bonine and non-drowsy Dramamine are the same drug. They aren't supposed to make you sleepy, but the one time I took Bonine I had a terrible side effect, I felt like each limb weighed 100 pounds, I could hardly move. I have been scared to take it again. I take regular Dramamine to travel and just sleep. I skip the rides at the parks that might make me sick. I hate to do it but it isn't worth getting sick to me.
The non-drowsy drugs last 24 hours. You should be able to take Bonine the night before and sleep, wake up in the morning and be able to go to the parks and do the rides. Many people do it that way.
The other natural remedies don't work for me, my case is too severe.

Meclizine (which is Bonine and less-drowsy Dramamine) CAN make you quite sleepy. It usually does not last 24 hours unless you are taking large doses, which would be Rx strength. The normal dose lasts around 6 hours at most.

I only take regular Dramamine for traveland it makes me very sleepy. I get boat sick, car sick, plane sick, train sick, but I haven never gotten roller coaster sick so I don't take it at the parks. Perhaps because the ride are so short? :yay:

I think I would be too drowsy to get through the day.

I took the less drowsy version once when flying and I didn't think it was as effective. I also used Sea Bands when I was pregnant with varying degrees of effectiveness. You need to be certain that the little button is positioned correctly on your wrist.

Good luck!

Jackie

Medications affect different people differently. We are all unique! :cool2: You might try something totally different like the Sea Band or ginger, but if you do, try it before you're at Disney - I like ginger as an herb or spice, but sometimes it upsets my tummy, so wouldn't try it at Disney for nausea for sure! :rotfl:

Or, since you know when the drowsiness hits you, maybe you should try an OTC stimulant, like caffeine, at those times.

Good luck! :goodvibes

The box says it lasts 24 hours and many people take it the night before with good success for 24 hour relief. If it only lasts 6 hours do people re-dose every 6 hours? Man, that would scare me to death.

I take Rx strength which is 25 mg. And I have to take it 3x daily. I have vertigo issues. I also take Dramamine. I buy 100 count bottles at Wal-Mart. That lasts only 4 hours though. The Dramamine only makes me mildly sleepy as I have a high tolerance for it by now. I am surprised that it says it lasts 24 hours. The doctor told me it only lasts a few hours in your system.

You do have a high tolerance. I have to take the upper dose of Dramamine (2 pills every 4 hours) when we drive or fly anywhere. I have done it for decades. It still knocks me out. But the side effects I had from Bonine scared me. If I took more than they suggest on the box I would end up comatose.
I know everyone has a different level of tolerance though, and I rarely take any meds at all really.

I take it with my breakfast. I need it for the bus trip, let alone the rides. If I take Bonine, even though it says "24 hours" , I will take 1/2 a bonine or a one dramamine in the late afternoon, to hold me over for the afternoon and bus-ride home. Honestly, I don't know if I don't get drowsy because I take it with breakfast, or if it because my addrenaline is up so much from being at "DISNEY".. Too much stimulation for me to get tired.

Seabands and ginger have not worked for me. (I have extrememe motion sickness issues), but when I take Bonine, I can go on upside-down rides and all! (Although I still can't go on the Simpsons' ride at Universal!)

I have motion sickness on cruises and rides. This is what I do.

The night before the trip (either to Disney or on a cruise) I take the 24hr. Bonine and then go right to sleep. I make sure that I will get at least 8 hours of sleep on any night I take the Bonine, otherwise I find that I am quite drowsy the next day. Also, I find that getting it into my system about a day before going really helps.

I then take the Bonine each night before bed. This way it stays in my system for the entire trip.

I have gone on cruises with VERY rough seas with no seasickness using this method.

However you handle it, best of luck to you.

Question, how many milligrams of meclizine is the 24 hour Bonine? Just curious. I would be it is at least 25 mg.

I take Less Drowsy Dramamine and I don't notice any drowsiness at all until about 10 hours after I take it. By then, it's usually getting later anyway. I usually end up falling asleep when we're at WDW by 9 whether I want to or not, thanks to Dramamine, but I would rather deal with delayed drowsiness than feeling sick on rides.
