I need all of your Disney expertise to decide between Boma or San Angel Inn. I know that they are completely different but would like some input from people that have been to either or both!

We have been to both. :) You are right..they are both completely different places so you can't really compare them...but I can tell you what we thought of both. :goodvibes

BOMA: We didn't like it at all. We are not picky eaters ..we just didn't enjoy the particular seasoning and spices that seem to be in most of the dishes. And a lot of the savory dishes had a lot of *sweet* to them. It just wasn't our taste. And I must be the only person here on the Disboards that does not like Zebra Domes. I though they were *ick* .
San Angel: Had a fantastic meal here in August. The service was excellent, the atmosphere is the best in World Showcase and we all loved our meals (Rib Eye Tacos were delicious!). We are planning on returning there in May. :)

We have been to Boma 5 years in a row. Absolutely love it. My wife has started making some of the recipies at home. Now I don't have to wait a year for my bobotie fix.

We have never eaten at San Angel, although everytime we are in the Mexican pavilion I am tempted to try it since the atmosphere looks very peaceful. However, I keep reading negative reviews so we have avoided it so far.

I have dined at both locations. I am not a picky eater either, but found some of the food there too spiced for me, and was mentioned some of the savory dishes were a little to sweet for me. And I too do not like Zebra Domes (so now there are two of us)

I loved San Angel Inn....there are a lot of negative reviews, take all of them with a grain of salt (in my experience talking to people at SA, they are looking for the Mexican they can get at home. I live in an area with a high mexican population, and have great food, but what you get there is authentic Mexican food from the different regions of Mexico.) I have to second that the Rib Eye Taco's are to die for. The only thing I got there that I did not enjoy was a Pineapple Margarita, it was way to strong, our sever asked if liked it and when I told him no it was to strong, he took it away and took it off the bill

Boma (a must-do for us every trip) is a buffet with a great variety of food. We all love it (though I, too, think the zebra domes are highly overrated :scared1:). It has a very good selection of vegetarian options. It's nice to wander around AKL after dinner. We've enjoyed watching the animals feed out on the savanna.

San Angel used to be a must-do before they changed their menu (we loved their mole chicken.) Now it seems to be hit-or-miss for us. The ambiance is great (Boma, on the other hand, seems to always be very crowded and noisy) We do like to duck in there after a long day of fighting heat and crowds at Epcot. Sometimes it's nice to relax in an air conditioned table service restaurant. And a cold refreshing margarita always helps, too! By the way, if you go to San Angel, check out the tequila bar nearby. That's our new favorite stop!

Is it true that San Angel is not on the DDP in 2011?? We were thinking about an ADR here, but someone said it would not be a TS option on the dining plan in 2011.

From what I understand nothing is cast in stone until Dec 31, 2010, for the 2011 DDP. The restaurants have until then to sign up to be on the DDP, most of the world showcase restaurants are not owned by Disney

San Angel Inn is pretty good but Boma is one of the best places to eat at the World

Have been to both and here is my review.

Boma, we did not like this meal. As others said, the spices used in ALL the dishes are sweet. Like cinnamon, vanilla, fruits, it is in everything. The meats were rubbed with cinnamon, the potatoes had sweet stuff in them. Even the soups were sweet. It was like eating a holiday dessert for dinner. Not our tastes.

San Angel Inn, we love this place. Not only is is romantic and the best atmosphere in WDW, the food is very good. I will warn it is not tex mex style, more traditional in nature, so look at the menu and be sure there is something that appeals to you.

And to the poster who is concerned about SAI on the dining plan in 2011. Most of WS places aren't renewed until the very end of the current year. As the mods have predicted they do NOT see any trouble with SAI being on the plan next year as well.
(there is a sticky concerning this in the 2011 dining plan thread)

Actually, for me, the cuisine at the restaurant would not be the deciding factor - it is the travel time. If I was staying at AKL, planning on spending the day at Epcot, return, eat dinner, and enjoy the resort - then I'd go with Boma. If was in Epcot, I would not leave to go to Boma and then return to Epcot for San Angel. Likewise, I would not go to Epcot, from wherever else I was, solely to eat at San Angel Inn.

We have eaten at Boma many times - DH and I love it - great service, fun & different food. We tried San Angel on our last trip, and although our food was fabulous, the service was absolutely terrible. Maybe it was just bad luck (we were pretty much the first seating for lunch), but we waited for an hour (literally) just to get drinks. Such a bummer, because our entrees were outstanding - once they arrived.

Anyway, I've got to vote for Boma.

Boma gets my vote!! There are so many options! Fell in love with the seafood gumbo and found the recipe on line to make at home!! Definitely always keep it on my dining list for WDW. San Angel Inn has its ambiance going for it and the food isn't bad by any means. Waits can get long though. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat at San Angel if I wasn't already in Epcot. On the other hand, I would take the time to go to AKL even if I wasn't staying there to eat at Boma! Hope this helps!!

We've eaten at both and I think it would come down to location for us as well. When we stay at AKL we will eat at Boma, though usually it's at Jiko. If we're in Epcot though, we'd try SA, but we also don't eat there as much because we have plenty of good mexican food at home! Thankfully! :) It's one of our favorite kinds. I DO love the new tequila bar, La Cava. IMO that's the only place I've been able to get a margarita that was worth the price and reminded me of something I'd get back home. Here in Austin, we make great margaritas! :) The atmosphere there is beautiful though, I love to go in and just linger.

We adore both, but sometimes don't make it over to Boma, because it is a little out of the way for us. However, we usually consider it on a day that we are going to do Animal Kingdom.

From the two choices, I'd pick SA over Boma for two reasons: I'm not a huge fan of buffet meals and I love the ambience at SA.

Hope that helps!

Boma is our favorite meal anytime, anywhere. I don't agree about the "sweet" taste in the food. Cinnamon isn't sweet, it's savory, unless you add sugar to it. We love Boma and it always gets my vote.

We've eaten at San Angel Inn 3 times, and every time we say never again. It's not the food- we love the food, it's NOT tex-mex which is what makes it so fascinating. Our problem with San Angel Inn is the personnel. Every single time we eat there, we feel like our presence is inconveniencing the staff... Like what a great restaurant we could be if only the customers weren't around. I never get the feeling that patrons are welcomed, that the staff is glad to see you or cares if you like your meal or not. It's more of a "what'll it be, here it is, eat it and get out" feeling! We go for the food... and certainly not on every trip (unlike Boma, where we sometimes go twice in a trip), because the staff is just so unfriendly and ungracious (if there is such a word) that it makes for a generally unsettling experience!

So glad I have found this thread. For those of you who like San Angel Inn, what do you usually order?

I got the sirloin with black beans and fried plantains. Oh my it was good. Had the Flan for dessert. Wasn't a huge fan of that, it is a texture thing. But the caramel on it was worth it. LOL
