my DH is a basic meat & potatoes guy, and my DD10 is a VERY picky eater-would i be shooting myself in the foot by making reservations for boma? i'd like to try a new restaurant on our next trip, but i don't want to waste my money. if anyone has any opinions regarding Boma's menu, how it would appeal to those w/ basic food tastes, or what your experience there was like in general, i'd really appreciate it. TIA! :goodvibes

We ate there last April and while I thought it was good, for a buffet, I thought that the buffet at Hollywood and Vine @ Hollywood Studios was much better and would probably please your meat and potatoes DH as well as the picky eater DD... Plus the dessert station was out of this world....

The prime rib @ Hollywood and Vine was actually quite better than the prime rib I had at Le Cellier @ Epcot.....

Just my thoughts... Enjoy whatever you do.....

really? our experience at H&V in 2006 wasn't nearly as positive...i considered giving it another try, but DH is hesitant. i'll definitely have to look over the menu again, perhaps it has improved? ty for responding, and ROLL TIDE!!!

Our experience at Hollywood & Vine was HORRIBLE, and it is the only restaurant at WDW that we won't return to.
I have not eaten at Boma. We are picky eaters and the menu does not appeal to me.
There are so many great restaurants in WDW that if the menu doesn't really appeal, try somewhere else. Don't judge your choices on what is popular, but rather what appeals to you.
Take a look at the menus here on the DIS, as well as allearsnet.com

My man is a meat and potatoes guy but a little adventurous too. They had a variety of meats but the prime rib and pork were favorites. They had a lot of good spicy foods too.

With the picky child, I would say go for it. There are enough, american kid friendly food to keep him/her happy! (i.e. chicken tenders, mac and cheese, etc.). For the picky husband, don't think it's worth it. The majority of the food is different. They use different spices, etc. and there are a lot of soups. I believe there is a carving board, he could do that, a regular salad and plenty of desert, but doesn't seem worth it. Try the buffets at 1900 Park Fare or the Cape May Cafe instead. Even Chef Mickey's does a nice buffet. Or, the family style meal in Whispering Canyon at Wilderness Lodge is awesome for a meat and potatoes guy!

I, too, am concerned about our upcoming meal at Bomas. Dh loves everything and I am the picky eater. I keep telling dh we may leave after the meal is over and find me a snack if I don't like it that much. However I am sure it will be fine.

Your Mileage May Vary... but having done Boma in September with a group of picky eaters (kids AND DH) I wouldn't do it again. DH found absolutely nothing he would eat. He didn't even like the Prime Rib (normally one of his favs) cause the spices we "all wrong". I liked it fine, but it wasn't worth it for my family. My 13 year old came away from it STARVING.
I might suggest the new buffet at Tusker House. I have read some very positive reviews of it here on the Dis, and it seems to have more of a variety of foods. Many Boma-like dishes for the adventurous, but also many more "Americanized" foods for the picky souls. :)

Edited to add: BTW we also really disliked Hollywood and Vine. Chose it because hubby likes buffets and none of the other MGM restaurants appealed to us. The general concensus was that we should have skipped it and grabbed a hamburger.

We eat at Boma's everytime we visit Disney World. My husband loves different types of food but I'm the one that is picky. I love the prime rib because they always have a well done roast to offer. I love it when the end piece is available! Some of the soups are good especially the Ginger Carrot soup (sorry I don't remember the "different" names of everything). I also like this sweet potato dish. The roast chicken is always good. There is also a nice children's menu available with lots of choices. The chicken fingers are one of the best available at the world.

Another reason we love to go to Boma's is because of the lodge. Animal Kingdom Lodge is so beautiful and something in itself to visit. You can go to a public Savannah to view the animals. So after a "hearty" meal we just love roaming around the lodge viewing the animals. So atmosphere is something to consider too.

Have fun, Beth

I think our experience at H&V was so good becuase we caught it just as it was opening for dinner, so everything was hot and fresh.

Also, I completely fogot about Cape May's, we love that place too. They have ribs and pork roast, as well as some sort of beef.

I am sure we will give Boma another shot at some point, maybe the sunburn from Typhoon Lagoon was part of the problem that day....

We just switched our Boma ADR to Yak and Yeti mainly because we did not want to travel to AKL and then try and find our way back to our resort (POFQ). So we switched mainly for convenience since we will already be in AK, but I also heard that the food at Yak is very good and my family loves everything on the menu. I was quite happy that we were able to change it just yesterday with our trip being 3 months away.

We ate at Boma on our arrival night last Saturday (1/5). DH is adventurous eater while I am more picky; he loves lots of meats and I would prefer pasta, veggies. We were both disappointed that we didn't really like Boma. For us it was the spices they used. They permeated nearly every dish we tried. The ribs were tender and spicy hot, but had the same spice taste that several other dishes had. The one dish that I did enjoy was the bobotie(?); I was surprised I becaused I'm not a fan of lamb. I think it also included sausage. They had 3 versions of hummas - sundried tomato, olive (tangy), and white bean, which were ok.

My DH is the pickiest person I know. So, I eased him into Boma. We tried breakfast there, which is very basic normal breakfast food. That way, when I suggest doing Boma for dinner, he'll be more open to it! Just a thought - try it for breakfast if you're worried he won't like it!

We didn't care for H&V either, overall the food was very average. My 9 yr old said the mac/cheese was "mushy and gross" although the spoon-cornbread was very tasty.

On the other hand we enjoyed Boma's, the selection is huge and there's also the usual kids selections as well. We found the food to be very flavorful, among our favs was the Bobotie and the Ginger Carrot soup which was to die for!

That said, we are from Hawaii where the variety of flavors is pretty extensive so we tend to be more open minded about trying different things. We are huge "foodies" so we love anything new and different.

My DS is the pickiest eater you can imagine. Last night he wouldn't even try the dinner I had cooked and went to bed without eating. Not easy for a 6' 1" and growing 16 year old. Everyone else in the family had seconds on dinner last night. Anyway, he LOVES Boma. We will be at Disney one night only this August and our family was unanimous in saying they wanted to eat at Boma. It may be the only time we have ever easily agreed where to eat. It is also one of the few place that DS will try new foods. As a previous poster said, there are also plenty of familiar kids foods if he won't try anything new. DS loves both the kids and adult offerings. I can't imagine that both your daughter and your husband couldn't find something to eat there. My problem is not having a big enough stomach to be able to eat more than just a sampling of all there is.
