Is it worth the distance??? We are using WDW transport. We are staying at POP, plan to be a MK for EMH (am) and have 6:15 ressies at Boma. Figured we would either stay at MK until dinner or maybe go to AK in the afternoon ( I was thinking early lunch at Contempo ). On return, figured we could hop bus to HS from AKL and then take bus from HS to POP. Heard AKL is beautiful as well and might be able to view animals etc. Have been reading quite a bit about people commenting that Boma is not necessarily worth the travel time and/or going out of your way for. It is just myself single DM and DD17. TIA

We ate there in 2009, and it was one of my favorite meals of the trip. We didn't get to it last year, but will be returning this summer. The food is excellent. There are different foods for those of you who want to try something different and plenty of standards for those who are less adventuresome. I would definitely plan some time to walk around the resort. We didn't budget enough time and regretted it. It is definitely beautiful to walk around. Hope this helps.

It does require a little extra commitment of time but IMO worth it at least once :thumbsup2 Your travel plans are spot on. Either take the bus direct from MK to AKL or bus direct from AK & then bus to AKL.

The resort is lovely & yes, you can see animals and walk the grounds. DH especially liked Boma's. We now chose Tusker House mainly because we can more easily dine there on AK touring days, but I would recommend trying Boma's at least once. I think a side trip to AKL is well worth it if you've never been. I'd suggest arriving before your ADR so you can relax in the beautiful hotel lobby rocking chairs looking over their savannah.

Your return home to POP via DHS is the way I would go too, unless by any chance AKL still has buses going back to AK when you are finished.

ENJOY :)

We really enjoyed our meal the last time we dined there. It's been a couple of years, but we are planning on going back for breakfast on our next trip (have read and heard that breakfast is just as wonderful as dinner). I think it is definitely worth the trip to eat there and then afterwards you can walk around the resort and look at all of the animals....the resort is amazing!

I would crawl over broken glass, sit through Stich's Great Escape, and ride the boat in Mexico twice if that's what it took to get a dinner at Boma. (in case you didn't notice, I like it.)

The key - take small helpings of lots of different dishes. Then go back if you find something you really like, and be sure to save room for the desserts.

Also, you are free to join the line at each separate station, you don't have to start every time in the long line that usually forms at the first station.

I'd definately say it was. I just posted a review of dinner at Boma over on the Restaurant Reviews forum.

DH and I love the food at Boma! We usually go for supper after our day at AK though, so don't know anything about the hassle to get there from other areas. But what you are planning sounds doable for sure. I don't think you'll be disappointed in the food or the resort and will find it is well worth it. Just a word of advise: go easy on lunch so you can really taste a bit of everything at Boma. Enjoy!

We have had dinner there many times - we like the food, the service is ok, and the resort is beautiful - worth a trip just to admire the resort. The dining room is pretty busy and noisy, but it hasn't been a huge drawback. I especailly like their soups!

We loved dinner here! We went there after spending the day at AK so travel was easy and we caught a bus to Downtown Disney afterwards. It is definitely worth the time getting there

Thanks for the extremely positive chuckle above and I thank all of you for your insights. Will keep it on scheduled. Next question..... I heard you can sometimes view the animals after dark and such... Anyone know what time the sunsets the beginning of June? I made a relatively early ressie (6:15 ) so, I'm thinking to maybe walk the grounds after. Right now AK is only set to be open until 7, so I'll head back to POP thru DHS (open to 9) - unless the transport is more frequent thru DTD

I really like Boma's and will be there every soon but mainly because we have transportation this time. One thing to keep in mind when making your reservations is when AK is closing that day if you plan to use the transportation.

I did dinner at boma s after spending the day at ak, it was well worth the trip! the spare ribs are the best I have ever eaten and Im by no means a big meat eater. The resort was awesome and we got to see many of the animals after our dinner. Will be doing another dinner there for our upcomimg trip in August as my dh and 2 grandkids have never been and I want them to experience it themselves. Enjoy!:thumbsup2

Sunset is around 8-8:30 in June. However, most of the animals will probably be long-gone from the savannah by then. I believe the handlers are putting out the evening feed closer to 5-6 PM,and they tend to keep the animals on the same schedule year round (that's what we were told before, anyway.) You will still see some animals after 7:00 pm, just not as many. There is a station with night-view goggles, but be warned they are in limited supply and first-come/first-serve...if people ahead of you want to keep using them, you're out of luck. Without the goggles, you're not going to see anything out there (we had a savannah view room in January...it's DARK on the savannah at night...they are trying to keep the animal habitat as natural as possible for the animals so there's no spotlights out there.)

As far as "walk the grounds"...you actually cannot do this at AK Lodge...there are two viewing areas, one at Kidani lodge and one at Jambo section (these are fairly large, man-made terraces made to look like a natural outcropping of "rock") which allow for public viewing of the savannah, but otherwise, the savannah is totally off limits. There's no wandering around looking for animals like you would at a zoo. Now, that said, if you're there before dark, you probably will see some animals...at least birds, anyway. And the main lodge is fabulous to wander around the lobby, looking at the decor and the displays...and great gift shop with many things from Africa there (not just Disney-branded merchandise) But there will be no wandering-the-grounds, lol. Just so you know before you go.:thumbsup2

We love Boma (omg, the soups are amazing)and usually go after a day at AK. We then take a bus to whatever park has EMH or go shopping at DTD and then head back to POP.

It's wonderful food and the hotel is awesome. Our favorite place to stay. I truly feel like I am someplace else. Boma is different, but worth at least one try. My VERY picky husband really likes it, and he really is picky. So if he can find many foods to enjoy, honestly anyone can. Though if you don't like stronger seasonings, you may have an issue. Even my little guy who isn't adventurous, loves it.

We especially appreciate the chefs, who because of my sons allergies come to our table and walk us through. They truly know their recipes, and there is no referring to a book for them.

Hope you like it!

We enjoy spending some time at the AKL, so we like going over there. Boma used to be our favorite place to eat in WDW. The last time we went though they no longer had some of the more unusual African dishes from earlier years (seemed not as exotic) and more set up to appeal to a theme park crowd (still decent, but not necessarily worth the special trip). I think next time, we'll try Jiko instead.

We go every trip - make sure you plan enough time to walk around the lodge and don't forget your camera!

Everyone in our family loves Boma for dinner, from my picky DD to my very adventurous DH and DD12. It is a must-do for us every trip. AKL is gorgeous and completely worth the extra effort to get there.

We stayed at AKL last September, so BOMA was our morning and evening meals (most days). IMHO, I LOVED Boma's b-fast. BTW- both are buffet style. I was not too impressed with dinner. While I did eat it, I was limited to what I could choose b/c it is African inspired with flavors throughout their dishes. Here are some things that Boma serves at dinner: carved meats, usually prime rib and another, fish, spaghetti, rice, different salads, mac n cheese, potatoes, and then various kids items. Keep in mind that the flavors of these are sometimes "odd" <- sorry the best way for me to describe them.

I would say that if you plan to be in the Animal Kingdom the day of your Boma reservation then by all means, try it out. But, I don't think I'd waste the time to come all the way from MK to Boma for dinner.

Everyone has different tastes though, all depends on what you like and what you want to do.

HTH. Oh and here is a recommendation that I like to give- If you haven't been before go to Earl of Sandwich at DTD! YUM!! :thumbsup2
