We are going to dine at Tusker House for lunch at AK. It will be our first time there. We had thought about trying Boma and a resort/pool day. Are they similar?

We don't find them redundant at all. IMHO, Boma cuisine is more varied and upscale. There may be a few dishes that overlap, but that's it. The experience is different too. I find Boma far more relaxing than lunch at Tusker House. My kids like them both, so we end up doing them both, mostly because Tusker House lunch is the only character meal I'm happy to sit through these days. And they like Boma for the food, even my "picky" eater. Me, I like having a wine flight with my soup and pistachio encrusted salmon. It is so good that it turned me from vegetarian to pescatarian on our last trip.

Is it safe to assume you are staying at AKLodge?

At AKLodge:
Jiko - the Signature.
Boma - 1-DDP credit for the buffet; no Characters. We prefer breakfast here over dinner.....because.....
Sanaa - 1-DDP credit for table service. Daylight meals can be enjoyed with a view of the Savannah. Some folks say this is redundant if a.) you are staying at AKLodge (particularly if you have a Savannah view), and/or b.) you can enjoy the same views just walking around the resort. We like Sanaa over Boma for the view....even if staying at AKLodge.

I think Boma has better food than Tusker House, but they do have similar 'flavor profiles' with curries that are 'exotic' to most guests. The food will not be very similar, but the flavor of mild curry will be a common element between the two restaurants.

If I were staying at AKLodge, I would likely eat at both (which is how we've tried Boma, Sanaa & Jiko). Otherwise, I'm not sure traveling there from another Resort is worth the trouble (since Disney makes resort-to-resort difficult if using their transportation).

One thing to consider about Tusker House, if you had any plan to see River of Lights, you might want the convenience of the Dining Package. Besides, I like Goofy!

IMO they are fairly similar, but we've only done breakfast at Boma and lunch/breakfast at Tusker. Not exactly the same, but in enough of the same vein that I wouldn't eat the same meal at both. Maybe if you do a Boma breakfast instead of lunch/dinner that would be a good option? Or as others have said if you want to check out AKL a lunch at Sanaa would be a great choice. The food is amazing and much better than either Boma or Tusker house IMO

We aren't staying at akl, but will have a car.

Since you are driving yourselves:

In my opinion, Boma is more 'special' for breakfast over dinner. Wouldn't be my first choice if I was driving myself, but certainly one of the best breakfasts at Disney. Enjoy!

FWIW, you won't be able to use the swimming pool at AKLodge.

Not at all! I avoided Boma for years because Im not a fan of Tusker House, though go with the kids for the characters. On a whim, I decided to try Boma last trip, after reading rave reviews for years and years. WOW....LOVED IT! I highly suggest going there. I also love pool days :)
