Boma a good choice?

I'm thinking of cancelling my ADR for H&V Fantasmic package. The reviews don't sound very good, plus there's always the chance of a rainout for Fantasmic. I definitely would not choose to eat at any of the package restaurants otherwise. So..... I'm thinking of Boma as my last TS meal. My question is this: We need a TS on our MGM day, so would we be crazy to leave MGM to have dinner at Boma and than go back? Is that a waste of precious park time? Is Boma worth it? We don't want to go on our AK day, as we have res for Hoop-De-Doo that night. Does anyone know how long the transportation would be between MGM and Boma? So many questions.......any answers? Thanks all!

I wouldn't leave MGM to have dinner at Boma and than go back; as you suggested, that would be a waste of time. Rather, I'd eat at Boma on the day you plan to spend at Animal Kingdom.

IMO, Boma is way overhyped on these boards. We have been, and we enjoyed the experience, but the bottom line is that its a buffet, and any food prepared in giant pans and stored under heat lamps is not as good as a freshly prepared meal, no matter what its ethnicity!

It is absolutely not worth going back and forth from MGM. Taje a look at Mama Melrose at MGM!

While I love BOMA and IMHO think it is one of the best takes on property for a cost effective TS meal, I would not leave MGM to go there if I was going to return later. I would also leave it for a different time.

Most of the reviews on Mama Melroses are positive, I would go there, I have eaten at the Hollywood Brown Derby and found it, while very good, to be a little fancier than we are used to and unless on a dining plan won't choose it in the future. We are a much simpler family (BOMA is not fancy, just different)

Yes, I also have the is Boma worth it question.
We are staying at AKL. DS liked the idea of Boma, but when I read the menu it didn't appeal to me AT ALL. I also hate buffets. I went over the menu with DS and it seemed he was really most interested in some of the meats and zebra domes (still don't know what they are). I'm sure he would be agreeable to choosing a different TS, but is Boma really a not to be missed TS?

It's the best buffet at WDW, IMHO. However, I do agree that freshly-cooked is better than buffet...

I have not eaten at Boma, but we did the Fantasmic package last year and ate at Mama Melrose. I would highly recommend it. The food was really good. The manager that night came around and asked my DS's if they wanted a disney pin. Of course they said yes. Well the stipulation was that my DH and I had to sing the Mickey Mouse Club theme song. It was fun and the boys had a good laugh at us.

You know, honestly, I don't know if I would characterize ANYTHING as "not to be missed." Having said that--I did really enjoy Boma. When I read the menu before my trip, it did not appeal to me at all. In fact, while I was standing in line at the buffet I was a bit dubious. But, there was a large percentage of rave reviews here (and I always think that this is a good sign), so I made sure to go and try most of everything. I was pleasantly surprised with many of things and there were many new tastes for me. I ended up REALLY enjoying it. In fact, I tried to make an ADR for a second night while I was there and I couldn't get in at all. It really is the best of the buffets. Also, what I do think is "overhyped" are the Zebra Domes. Good, tasty but, eh, just another chocolate dessert and certainly not the best on my trip.

I have stayed at AKL twice and it is my favourite hotel ever, waking up to animals in the savannah is heaven. I have eaten breakfast at Boma which is buffet style and is quite good but a little expensive. Have not eaten dinner at Boma as the menu did not appeal to my DD (10), however I do believe they will serve children from the childrens menu if required.
You do not need to eat in Boma to try the Zebra domes they sell them in the self service cafeteria, they are delicious, a biscuit base with choc/coffee mousse covered in milk choc with white cholc stripes .

We ate at Boma last July. I absolutely loved it. My DH won't go back. I would recommend Boma, but not if it is a huge hassle in your schedule. We also ate at Hollywood and Vine and we both agreed on that one. We won't go back. I didn't find the food to be anything great. As a matter a fact, it was our least favorite meal while at Disney. We were there 12 days so that is a big comparison.

We've stayed at AKL twice, and enjoyed dinner at Boma once - btw, that was during a trip that we weren't even staying at AKL. It convinced me to stay there though! DS(now 9) is severly food allergic, and the chef walked us through the buffet, explaining what he could and could not eat. Then brought him skewers of salmon (he likes a lot) and other stuff. I'm not a big buffet fan, as I'm full after a little bit. But it's honestly really good food. That being said...
If you are at MGM, I'd find a place either there, or at Epcot (take the boat there and back, maybe you have to transfer at Boardwalk or BC). That's not worth the travel time at all. I ate at the Prime Time Cafe last trip in June, and had some wonderful fried chicken (really cheap at $12, and it was awsome). You could also walk to Boardwalk and there are some great choices (I would skip Flying Fish - PM me if you want details, it was the worst meal I've ever had at WDW and $200 or close - awful awful awful). Don't make the trip for that one meal, it's a fine place for dinner if you are staying at the AKL and really hungry (it is a buffet after all ). But there are so many choices close to MGM! By the way, ENJOY
