Has anyone done this?

Our son is an oatmeal addict and I would be thrilled to make an easy breakfast in the room. I'm just concerned that we won't be able to get the coffee taste out of it.

You are right the water will have a coffee taste to it. You could try to flush it out with some white vinegar....but really....even the coffee tastes bad from those machines.

I have a travel sized kettle that I always bring with me. It will hold about 2cups of water. It even came with 2 tiny plastic cups that stack and fit inside the kettle.

I never noticed a coffee taste (and I hate coffee)......but a good cleaning surely wouldn't hurt the taste......

Or you could alternately put the hot water in the small ice cooler that they have in every room, and then put a cup of "clean" water in the hot water bath to warm it up. Then just use the clean water in the oatmeal.

I brought along a hot pot as well. I have used the coffee pot for hot water for tea. I don't recall my tea tasting like coffee.

I use the coffeemaker to make tea. To make certain there is no coffee taste, I remove the filter from the coffeemaker. Also check to make sure the carafe was washed, not just rinsed. If the carafe smells like coffee, just use bar soap to clean it. Rinse well and you're set.

Of course the water really isn't boiling but it's hot enough for oatmeal, tea, etc..

bring an immersion coil and a mug to boil the water in - no smell/taste!

1) Coffee pots do not boil water.
2) To "flush" coffee taste, run clear water 2-3 times, or vinegar once.

Most people don't travel with vinegar.;)

And just flushing it with water wouldn't remove the taste from plastic well enough for me. Even washing a plastic filter in the dishwasher doen't remove it for those of us picky about tea.

Just take the filter out.

suzimar, I've seen those immersion coils but always thought they would be a fire hazard.

I've never noticed a coffee taste. We've done cup of ramen and grits with the coffee pot as well as hot tea. We've never had a problem.

I bought a little "hot shot" from wal-mart for about 10 bucks, just pour water in and it comes out HOT in about 30 seconds...small enough to pack too! It was perfect for our oatmeal!
