Can someone who has recently been to dinner at BOG confirm the removal of the potato leek soup? On the WDW menu, it looks like it has been replaced with lobster bisque. I'm wondering how accurate the online menu is. Thanks!

Just ate dinner there 2 nights ago and can confirm that the Potato Leek Soup has been removed. Lobster Bisque is in it's place.

Thank you for the confirmation. Bummed to hear it, though, because it was my daughter's favorite thing to eat. She's a picky vegetarian but adored this soup. At least now we know. Thanks again!

And yet another vegetarian alternative bites the dust...

Right now it is still showing up on the lunch menu. I hope that menu is accurate and remains unchanged. BOG dinner used to be a must-do for us. Now I'll be shopping around to see what else might work.

And how they think lobster bisque is a good replacement for a veggie option I do not know.

What is Disney doing? 10 years ago the chefs I spoke with even at Disneyland proved themselves on their inclusiveness and making good things for everyone. Lobster? So this change gets the allergic people, vegetarians and vegans, and those who keep basically kosher (obv someone fully keeping kosher won’t be ordering off any menu, but I know many people who keep to the basic food guidelines). Not sure how Muslims feel about lobster.

Ugh.

I think maybe it's more that they're seeing a loss because people aren't ordering the pasta with lobster in a lobster sauce as much, so it's a way to find value in the ingredients they have for an entree by sacrificing a starter that wasn't ordered as much. :confused3

Not that leeks are expensive, but they don't appear anywhere else on the menu. This could simply be a streamlining measure - like taking the seafood dish from a pastry shell to being served over pasta.

Has anyone tried the lobster bisque? I'm not sad about this change since I found the potato leek soup lacking (I make a pretty amazing one so the bar is pretty high for me)

Well Muslims have the same dietary restrictions. I work it hard just to keep 90% kosher myself and I will miss the soup to (can't eat lobster OY)

Would you be willing to share the recipe?
I follow the guidelines somewhat of recipes online, but I tweak them a bit. Here's what I do:

Ingredients (copied from recipe online)
  • 3 large leeks (about 3 cups after chopping)
  • 2 Tbsp butter - I use a little more butter than this, but I don't measure
  • 4 cups chicken broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian option) - I find it tastes about the same with either. I use Chicken broth normally, but vegetable broth for my family since three are vegetarians
  • 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon gold or Russet), peeled, diced into 1/2 inch pieces - the Yukon gold will make the soup creamier. Peel and cut into smaller pieces
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt, less or more to taste - I like to add only a little salt and pepper at the start. Potatoes will absorb a lot of the salt, so when I add the majority at the end I think you get more kick with adding less.
  • Pinch of dried marjoram - I don't do this
  • 1 or 2 sprigs of fresh thyme, or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme - I prefer the fresh. I pull the leaves off of the long stick and put those into the pot.
  • 1 bay leaf - I don't do this
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley - I don't do this
  • Sprinkle of Tabasco sauce or other red chili sauce - I use black pepper to give it a little spice not these
  • White or black pepper to taste
  • I add a cup of white cooking wine
  • Put everything into a pot and cook on medium heat for 20 minutes. I like using the hand held blender for convenience, but you can also use a normal blender that's what I used to do. If you like it all smooth and creamy blend everything. If you like some chunks of potato leave a few pieces out of the blending process and mix back in at the end. I make this all the time and people love it. The hardest part is peeling all the potatoes :)

I like this version because it doesn't use cream or flour so it's healthier and still tastes really good.

isn't the onion soup vegetarian as well? so I don't feel like they should be under any obligation to provide two veggie soups at any one restaurant. I appreciate that people have special dietary needs but I don't think that having one veggie and one seafood soup is the end of inclusiveness as we know it. So basically disney should have no allergens in any of their menu items now because it makes people with allergies, vegetarians and vegans and people who have a religious prohibition against shellfish uncomfortable?

If it were the only vegetarian option I could see the complaint but I don't see a lobster bisque as a huge downgrade from the potato leek soup and Disney changes their menus all the time. as long as there is still a veggie option (and one that is quite loved and well reviewed) I don't see what the big deal is... except the usual "UGH there was something I loved and it's gone now." That's happened to me a few times. But I realize it's about my personal preference. like Sci Fi got rid of their delicious wings for boneless wings? boneless wings are an abomination! I'll grouse about it but because that's my preference, not because it is inherently better or worse, but I do totally get the feeling when a favorite is changed or gone all together... but it does happen all the time and sometimes new favorites happen (though granted not for vegetarians in this case!) I don't think anyone can claim something with a lobster base is a huge cost cutting measure over something with a potato base either :)

I preordered for our BOG lunch and ordered the potato leek soup. That is for Dec 12th, I think. I guess I'll find out if it's still there in a couple of weeks!

Lobster bisque is delicious, and if made right will be a great addition to BOG menu. We also like the french onion soup - never tried the leek soup.

Just had it for lunch a few weeks ago - hope it stays there at least. It is my favorite, and all I ordered last time, since still full from late brft at CP!

Not sure about the one at BoG but many onion soups use a beef base.
