This might sound a little odd but does anyone know what the "gray stuff" at BOG means?

do you mean the name "the gray stuff"...that's from the song "Be Our Guest" from the Beauty and the Beast movie...there's a line in Be Our Guest, when Lumiere sings "try the gray stuff...it's delicious". That's where the name "the gray stuff" comes from.

As for what it is...it's a small "puff" of grayish-mousse-like-substance...like piped onto the plate from a fancy frosting decorator bag. Looks "elegant" with little round crunchies on top, and "it's delicious" stenciled on the plate in cocoa. The mousse stuff tastes vaguely chocolate to me.

You cannot order "the gray stuff"...they bring it out to tables who have noted a special celebration (like a birthday or an anniversary) We happened to be at Be Our Guest one night right before the restaurant closed, there was only about 10 tables that still had people finishing up, paying bills, etc. Apparently they must have made up too many plates of "the gray stuff" because the servers suddenly appeared with big trays & started handing out the plates of gray stuff to all tables...that's how we got to try it. It was OK...cute idea, but not good enough to want to actually order it, lol.

It's cookies and cream mousse.

I've seen it described that way, but honestly, after actually eating the gray stuff...well, what we had did not resemble any cookies & cream mousse we've had before. Didn't taste like it, and no cookie flavor, no cookie bits in it that we could determine, no cookie base or anything like that...other than the perfectly round little crunchy decors on top that might be construed to be crunchy like cookies. But they didn't taste like cookies, either. The decors were kind of tasteless. The mousse itself was a chocolate-like flavor, but not very strong...almost like a flavored whipped cream. Just not a very flavorful dessert. It was OK, but like I said, not good enough to want to order in the future. JMO, of course.

When it was introduced for the restaurant, I recall them referring to it as an Oreo panna cotta.

yep, that's exactly what they brought out to all the tables...it is a small serving, maybe a 3 tablespoons, tops. And it may be an oreo panna cotto, or it may be a cookies & cream mousse...but whatever it is, the flavor is very, very subtle.

agreed...I think the cream, extra sugar and gelatin likely used to make it a panna cotta probably masks much of the Oreo flavor. It kind of reminds me of any of the light cookies and cream ice creams I've tried ... i.e. where it's more that it gives off the appearance of a cookies and cream, but not so much the taste.

Mine had little flecks in it, but it didn't taste like cookie or oreos to me. I agree with you, once was enough for me. The presentation is cute and of course it's a great tie-in from the movie, but not something I need to have again.

When we went in January, our server told us that the staff did not even know what was in it. Apparently only the chefs know and aren't telling. The waiters/waitresses were all trying to guess and he asked for our help too. The most dominant flavor I got was almond extract. It was not chocolatey or Oreo flavored to me at all. It was fun to say we tried it, but certainly wasn't anything worth eating again.

I loved the grey stuff! But, I am a huge BatB fan, so that kind of skewed my perception LOL. I especially enjoyed the crunchy "pearls". To make sure we got it, I made a note on our ressie that we were celebrating my birthday. (Although it was 2 months later than my actual birthday, it was a belated celebration and I was paying for it with a giftcard I received as a birthday present.) I also wore a Happy Birthday button so our server would notice just in case it didn't show up. Sure enough, we were offered the grey stuff :goodvibes The best part is, it's free!
