Body Fails....

Hello DISers:

About a year or so ago, I recall a lady that spoke about being overweight and finding herself unable to get out of her Space Mountain seat without help from a CM. Her thigh or her hip malfunctioned or something like that. Her testimony was charming and self-deprecating, which told me she was comfortable in her own skin and unafraid to make mention of the incident.

I've always wanted to let her know that she wasn't alone and answer her via this post, and so I am only now getting around to it. I'm calling it Disney Parks Body Fails. How many of us have had Disney Vacation body fails? I'm speaking mostly about body parts, or passing out from the heat, etc. (as opposed to just being hot and going back to your resort, or vomiting after a ride).

I had a major body fail in 2015. It's a body fail that I file in my MIND OVER MATTER folder. I will explain why.

I'd been doing Epcot all day. It was near the end of night, and I recall that my feet were just a TAD fatigued, but not so much that they were aching me. I recall walking out of Mouse Gears, knowing that I was indeed tired, and my feet MILDLY fatigued.... I headed towards the exit. The moment.... the very second, I stepped out of the EPCOT exit, an aching came over my feet that I'd never felt before. I even cried out. And to top it off, my bus stop was POP, number 16 --- the very end of all of the bus stops. I limped all the way to my stop and then resolved to sit on the ground (while in the line, thank goodness I was near the front) until the bus came. Luckily the bus did not take long, and I know that sitting down on the must have been such a relief, I honestly don't really don't remember anything after that. I just remember that the moment I stepped OUTSIDE of EPCOT... it felt like I couldn't take another step. But why didn't it hit me while I was inside the park... a few minutes prior, while I was in Mouse Gear???? It only happened the VERY MOMENT I stepped outside of the park. MIND OVER MATTER. My feet didn't hurt because I wasn't going to acknowledge it while I was at Epcot. I could only acknowledge it when my mind knew the day was done. That's my body fail. I just think it's so funny when I look back on it. The way one little step was suddenly painful, and yet the step prior was not. lol.

Wondering if anyone else has any Body Fail stories like mine or the lady who suddenly couldn't get up out of her Space Mountain seat?

How much of that was a body fail vs improper footwear?

How much of that was a body fail vs improper footwear?
Wasn't improper footwear. I always wear flop-flops, I have flat feet and arches hurt my feet. Wore the same flip-flops for EIGHT DAYS this past November. No aching feet whatsoever.
Feet never even hurt during that 2015 visit either. However, I would indeed have a problem if I had worn sneakers. It took me two visits in the 90's to realize that I cannot do sneakers all day long. When I started wearing flat shoes, suddenly, no more aching feet.

Uh I have arch issues and my feet hurt like the dickens at Disney, but I put up with it, because I'm in Disney.

There's ALOT of walking involved and yes in proper footwear. Whatever.

Ah yes, are they the infamous $1 Old Navy flip flops?

It was still a body fail nonetheless.

That's debatable.

For my first two visits my husband I could not figure out why my feet hurt so badly. After three days I, like you, would just put up with it - but it never went away. I did not know that I had "flat feet." Then after our second Disney visit, my husband and went to an amusement park that summer, and something told me to go in my flat shoes. I walked around that day in my flat shoes, with no fatigue whatsoever. I then paid more attention to my feet and realized that I have flat feet and even my broken in good sneakers do not work for me if I have to be on my feet all day. I'm glad I figured it out. I rock Disney now.

I'm glad for you but I know my feet very well and have had many a specialist work with them. Mine b/c the arches are so high even with the best shoes for the job, will always have issues.

No they were Disney Flip Flops. Had Princess design on them.

Well, there ya go. Old Navy level flip flops with a Disney price tag.

If you had that much issue with your feet hurting, why not seek a professionals opinion? You may be completely wrong with what you're doing and creating more damage without knowing it. Just because there's "no issues now" doesn't mean you remedied the problem.

The year before last, I got pretty badly dehydrated in MK. I kind of knew I needed a drink, but it was the end of the night, time to leave the park, and I figured I'd just get a drink when we got back to the house. One the way to the ferry boat, I didn't feel great in the crowd, couldn't cool down, then walking across the bridge onto the boat, the bridge swayed, and the world around me swayed, not good lol. I managed to make it to the boat, but I was a dizzy, unstable mess the whole ride over to TTC, and once at TTC, I had all I could do to get off the boat. I eventually made my way up to the plaza area near the tram boarding, and that was as far as I got under my own power. Wound up needing an ambulance to go to the hospital, where I had a 1 and 1/2 day vacation from my vacation. I suppose that counts as a fail, and a lesson learned about making sure I keep very well hydrated in the parks!

Whoa! I'll say that counts as a fail! A pretty hefty one! Your body gave out (due to lack of hydration), and there is always a reason the body gives out, but regardless of the reason... it's a fail - which is what I was asking about.. and that's a pretty hefty fail! Glad it only resulted and a day and a half loss. Ah, the stuff we endure for Disney!
Great story! Glad you are well!

I agree but still a body fail. I had that happen in the queue line for Soarin. I was walking, briskly somewhere near the center of the queue length and my foot scuffed the ground, or tried to, but my new shows, "guaranteed to give a tight grip on the service" did what it was supposed to and stopped my foot dead. I was still in going forward mode and because of that down I went face first. Fortunately, I was near the railing so I reached out and grabbed the rail which slowed my fall. The people behind me told me that I went down real graceful like. Embarrassed I got up and continued on thanking them for the compliment.

Two days later I was in Universal and walking along a path to an attraction and it happened again. This time I had no railing to grab and went down hard on my knees and hands. It was on gravel so my knees were slightly scratched but my left hand contained a couple of bleeding punctures and my face was hot with embarrassment because like last time, there were all kinds of people around, but, I wasn't anywhere near as graceful this time. It was during that fall that I realized what was causing my topples, my shoes were to damn good at their job. As soon as I got home they hit the floor in the corner of my closet and have not moved since. Again living up to the advertisement.

Yes, that's certainly embarrassing. Glad you got to the bottom of your problem!
Mine weren't my shoes (flip flops), I'd been walking for days in those flip flops in 2015, wore them during the summer of 2016, killed them for 8 Disney days in November 2017. I have never had foot fatigue. I know where my fatigue came from. It was from the fact that I was about on day three of the CONSTANT walking in the flip flops. My body was just getting used to it. By the next morning I was back out on the WDW trek and no more foot fatigue problems. I am also more fit than I was in 2015. So during my 2017 visit, I wondered if fatigue would set in, but not once. And I did 17 hour days for 8 days straight. Really proud of that 2017 trip!

Your fall reminds me a a pro soccer player friend (in the 80's) who was wearing cleated footwear. He went to slide into a kick, but on whatever surface he was on (I forget the details) the cleats did not ALLOW him to slide, so his leg was stopped, and his knee went pop. Career stifler.
