I wont make this long and drawn out... I am certainly no animal activist (cows, pigs, fish, chickens... etc. taste GREAT!), however, after watching the movie "The Cove," it certainly makes you think twice about going to SeaWorld. I'm not saying I wouldnt go back, but I do understand where Bob Barker is coming from. Its a good movie, and its available on Netflix instant streaming.

I have not seen the Cove but I did want to ad that Bob Barker dose not just go after the big name company's.He went before the Council of the South Eastern Cherokee Nation in Cherokee NC, several years ago to plead for a band on the bear dens. These are bears kept in cages for tourist to look at. The cages are just concrete walls with no windows or even toys or other entertainment for the animals. I went to one of these places and saw it for myself and it is pretty said. I do think that Sea World dose a good job at keeping the animals clean healthy and entertained

Propaganda movies want to make you feel horrible. That's their prime objective. Reality lies elsewhere. Places like Seaworld usually have large conservation departments that help animals far beyond what these "film makers" would like you to believe. Some animal activists are never satisfied, some are even terrorists, blowing up buildings for their cause.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't care about the animals at places like this, but to blindly believe hate driven propaganda is bad. Do research yourself and draw your own conclusions.

I can't speak about this movie in particular, or Seaworld for that matter. I just know what it's like to be in a cancer research facility when a bomb scare siren goes off because some animal rights nutball calls in a threat.

Hm, touchy subject.

I don't think I could go back to Seaworld as an adult , as I doubt I could manage seeing the animals in captivity if the spaces were too small for them etc. However, on the other hand I also realize that without many of the conservation efforts, they might be extinct.

Hmm....

I don't want to be preached to so all these kinds of things make me want to do is go to Sea World more.

Agreed!

I love SeaWorld and am proud to be an annual passholder.

This was a PSA from PETA, Bob Barker was not acting on his own. Did PETA pay Bob for the ad?

As far as "The Cove" goes, I have to question Rick O'Berry's motives. He was fine training dolphins until "Flipper" was canceled and the paychecks stopped.

I would have a big problem with an elephant chained up in a Flea Market parking lot, but companies like SeaWorld and Feld Entertainment take very good care of their animals.

If you have a problem with SeaWorld's existance, then dont go. If people dont show up, SeaWorld will cease to exist.

Hey Bob......."Come on down" to the soak zone with me.

I don't go to Sea World because it makes me uncomfortable. But that's my prerogative. I don't force it on others.

PETA is nothing but a terrorist organization. Bombing buildings, however just your cause, should not be tolerated. Makes me want to go to Seaworld wearing leather and eat a steak or three just to piss them off.

PETA goes way too far. We have an animal group in our area who is fighting to not allow people to own backyard chickens based on animal rights. My idea is if a family uses 2 dozen eggs a week it makes more sense to keep 4 hen happy then allow then to be in cages. IDK but I know I won't stop eating eggs so she shouldn't push her beliefs on me.

Yikes.

Since I have nothing nice to say about that comment, I will politely hold my tongue, but I did find it a bit harsh.

I support PETA's underlying goal of protecting animals, but I wouldn't picket with them nor throw a tofu pie in an omnivore's face. Extremist backlash on EITHER side is inappropriate, both sides need to respect (but not agree with) each other's point of view. I understand that people will eat meat in front of PETA protesters or carry around an animal carcass- just please realize that this is offensive to the peaceful animal supporters as well. I don't push my veggies in your face, so please don't push meat in mine.

That said, I appreciated how Kevin handled the controversy during the podcast. I felt it was appropriate and kept from being offensive. There are strong arguments from both sides- I can appreciate the learning opportunities provided from contained animals, but we wouldn't chain up people as spectacles like such. Being a vegan (for HEALTH reasons), and having worked on kilimanjaro safaris with different animals day in and day out, I can sympathize with the animals and I've seen their individual personalities come out. We used to joke that working on safaris turned us vegetarian, because it's hard not to fall in love with those animals.

Anyways... let's keep this civil and try to see both sides of the argument. It's okay to agree to disagree :thumbsup2

I was a leukemia researcher for 5 years. One day I was on the last step of an experiment that was three months in the making, using extremely high doses of radioactive iodine to label antibodies we had created against a specific type of leukemic cells.

Off go all the alarms in the research facility. Someone, who identified themselves as from PETA, had called in a bomb threat. Since I couldn't just leave radiation lying around, I had 2 choices. Take about an hour to clean up the mess appropriately and safely, thus losing three months of work, or continue with my experiment, which under the best of situations would have took me about 2 hours. Not like working with radiation is stressful enough, try doing it with the threat of being blown to bits on top of it.

In the end I was the only person, other than the Toronto bomb squad in the building, finishing up my experiment. Our team eventually used that experiment and others to develop an improvement in bone marrow transplantation techniques. Techniques that Pamela Anderson herself has used for her hepatitus 3 treatments. And there WAS a bomb dropped off, but luckily it was very poorly made and didn't go off as expected.

A bit harsh? Two sides to every story? When's the last time someone tried blowing you up at work?

I have no problem with animal rights in general, as animals all over the world would be far worse off without them. But I stand my ground as calling PETA a terrorist organization.

Actually, I had a bomb threat when I was at work back in 2009, so I know how scary that is :scared1:

I understand that you have a personal issue with them. I'm not discrediting that, nor defending their outrageous behavior that was unwarranted- that really crossed the line and makes me ill! Again, I think extremeists on BOTH sides are morally and socially wrong. However, I don't think that prancing in leather/eating gobs of meat in their presence makes the situation better :confused3 An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

Hopefully you were just trying to prove your point that you disagree with their stance, and not serious. If you were, that's your right and I'm not going to stop you. I don't have a problem with others wearing leather or others eating meat, but I hate to see animals killed just to make a point, if that makes sense. I think that PETA (and other animal rights groups that you commended :thumbsup2) do bring light to many big issues that the entertainment and food industries intentionally hide from consumers, and allowing us to see the other side (other than YUM this chicken has protein and makes you stronger!) lets us be smarter consumers. Rather than pretending the issues don't exist, my personal opinion is that we should take in the facts rather than ignoring just because it's easier to do.

If you have anything personally you would like to say to me, feel free to PM :thumbsup2 I have a bad habit of replying to a thread and forgetting about it

Back to Bob Barker.

Back to Bob Barker.

Very well put. I was only joking about pissing them off intentionally. Animal research is a lot like places like Seaworld, it's easy to quickly look at the animals and say the experimenters are evil, but in the long run you should also look at the vast amount of good they do. Most medical advances have in some way involved using animals, and it's the same people that bomb buildings that wouldn't hesitate to use these advances for their own good.

Trust me, scientists who use animals for research would much rather not use animals if at all possible, if for no other reason than it costs a heck of a lot of money.

I fully support animal conservationists, such as Jane Goodall, Jeff Corwin, the late Steve Irwin and others. They think if the animals first, and not their personal extreme agendas.

Last month Bob Barker was in Toronto telling our world class zoo to get rid of our elephants. I think the world would be a much better place if Bob got spayed and neutered, and stopped harassing his "beauties" and others that enjoy seeing animals in places like zoos and Seaworld.
