Boardwalk Upgrade?

I just returned from a great week at the Boardwalk Villas. I had an incredible trip and loved the resort. My only issue was when we checked in we were told we were upgraded from a studio to a one bedroom. Being a DVC member I know our upgrades are few and far between so I was really shocked and happy about this. I had booked a pool/garden view. When we got to our room I noticed the view was not either of those. Also on my tally sheet of the room charges it stated that it was a standard view. I am not complaining about the room but would you really think this is an upgrade. I wanted a different view and used points for a pool view. What I got was not what I really wanted so is it really an upgrade or downgraded view?

If the one bedroom standard view cost more points than the studio garden/pool view, then it was an "upgrade" in the sense you got a more "expensive" room for less than what it would have normally cost you all things being equal. Whether you consider an upgrade or not is subjective. In Disney's mind, it was an upgrade because you agreed to use x number of points for a room that cost that, and they gave you a room that cost more than those "x" number of points for the same amount as you would have paid for the original room.

If a one bedroom standard view costs more than a pool/lagoon view studio then I would think it was an upgrade.

Would you have refused the upgrade if you realized that it didn't have the view that you had wanted?

I have felt the same way about some "upgrades" Disney gave us. For some it would be an upgrade because you like the space for some view is more important.

For us since there is only two of us it would be a downgrade. I would have gone back to the front desk and asked for the room I reserved.

I was happy with the space and the washer/dryer in the room. I am not complaining about it at all. I really enjoyed my stay there. I am just stating I am not sure I would call it an upgrade. You get more room but lose the view. I think it is more of a trade off from one to the other.

The BWI CL has a habit of "upgrading" guests from the standard CL rooms to the Garden Suites if you are a party of two. Yes they are more expensive but a long walk from the lounge (up 4 flights of stairs, and you have to go outside) with no balconies and basically no views. I'm always afraid we will be offered these rooms when we check in because it's almost always just my husband and I. I have read of it happening often but so far have only been offered it once and they were fine when I said I wasn't interested in those rooms. "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" doesn't count when it comes to free upgrades, if it's not what you wanted don't be afraid to say no thank you.

See, because it's more space, it's much closer to an upgrade than when poor, unknowing Caribbean Beach Resort guests get "upgraded" to Pirate Rooms.

I would consider going from a studio to a one bedroom an upgrade regardless of view.

Like, this week, a Preferred Studio is 17 points for a weekday. A 1BR is 28 points. 11 points = upgrade, basically.

Given the exterior work in progress, I suspect this is a pure case of "upgrade for convenience of Disney." My guess is that a handful of studios in the class you booked (pool/garden?) had exterior work going on. Mmm, paint smell and a crane!
