Just a heads-up to all my fellow DVC members! Please check your rooms carefully for bed bugs when you check in!! I originally posted this on the Resorts Thread, but I thought you all might find this info helpful, too!

Boardwalk Bed Bugs

Thanks for the warning. Murphy's law says that's the room we will get when we check in next weekend.:teeth:

Wow! We have never experienced this at any WDW resort during many, many WDW trips. Actually, thank heavens, we have never experienced this anywhere!
It does make you think about who slept in a resort bed before you did!

Disney HAS to be told about this - and you do deserve compensation. This happened to my brother on his last trip to Florida (staying off-site) and they were covered with bed bug bites. I saw on Date-Line or Prime-Time (one of those shows) that they are becoming more prevalent and are very difficult to eradicate. They also said you should check under the sheets of hotel beds always and one of the signs is the little blood spots you are talking about. I know a guy whose whole house became infested because of hitchhiking bugs from a hotel. He had to remove all carpet, baseboards, mattresses etc. from his house - it was a huge ordeal and expense. Also these critters can infest other rooms and become a huge problem for the hotel. Now I'm creeping out. I do hope that you killed any in the laundry when you got home.

The show I saw showed them but I can't describe them and I don't know how magnafied they were but I believe that they would be big enough to see (not microscopic or anything). They do lurk around the thick binding on the edges of the mattresses - and they said to look for blood spots on the mattress cover and mattress. I would also look between the mattress and boxspring.

All it takes is one group bringing the bedbugs in with their luggage. Disney has no way to prevent that and needs everyone's help to notify them so they can eradicate the bugs ASAP when they are discovered. They need to notify their housekeeping staff about how to detect the problem too.

Now I'm going to be paranoid when we get there.

It gives me the eeby jeebies.

:crazy2:

What does a bed bug look like? How big?

I've seen several articles recently about the major problem all hotels -- even the most deluxe -- are having with bed bugs. Please let Disney know of your experience so that they can work on the problem. Regular laundering will not solve the problem for the them. They'll have to take special measures. I'm sure if they are aware of the problem they can deal with it and, hopefully, nip it in the bud.

You may also want to take special care now that you are home. The problem with the bugs is that they love to "travel".

My understanding is that the bugs are pretty much impossible to see with the naked eye (along the lines of dust mites). The "spots of blood" mentioned are the telltale sign that they are about.

I called BWV Housekeeping last night. I explained the situation and gave them my room number. They were VERY grateful that I had called. Hopefully they will be able to eradicate the nasty little critters. With the recent outbreaks, it sounds like they may have to start doing regular "bed bug checks" in all the rooms!

(I plan to follow-up in writing later this week.)

PS -- This whole experience has given new meaning to the phrase: "Sleep tight -- don't let the bed bugs bite!"

Kara, thanks for making the call!

Here's an article on the problem.

Bed bugs

Thanks Kara for the update. WE are leaveing in a few days and I will certainly check at VWL for any bed bugs!! My skin is crawling just thinking about it................

Nice to see you posting................hope all is well..............I talked with your mom (PM ing) and we will just miss her and your dad this summer...............take care

I called BWV Housekeeping a few minutes ago. I expressed my concern and asked what they did about the complaint and what they may be planning to do to prevent other incidents.

The women I spoke to was very nice and explained that once they got the call from KARA they immediately called pest control. The room was treated, cleaned from "top to bottom."

I asked if this is a problem that has occurred in the past and she said that this was the first time. Not sure if that is the exact truth, but I am going to take her word for it.

My DW is a bit queezy about all this, so that's why I had to call to get info that would calm her down.

It won't ruin our trip home!

Just curious, what was your room #.... if it was anywhere close to ours our luggage will be going in plastic bags on the porch!!!

That room is probably fine now that it has been cleaned so well and pest control was there. I'd be more worried about the rooms on either side of it - since the bugs travel around so easy. I hope this was caught early on and there is no infestation. I'm curious now if anyone knows of this at any of the other WDW resorts. It happened to my brother at an off-site hotel.

 HOLY SMOKES!!! Yes, please--if anyone else experiences anything at any of the other resorts--VB and All-Stars, in particular ;) , let us know!! We'll be heading to VB in late May with a night at ASMu before and ASMo after. Sure would hate to experience those little buggers--even worse, I would hate bringing them home!! :Pinkbounc

Is anyone else planning on waking up in the middle of the night and throwing the covers back to see if there is anything there? I read in the magazine that that was how the one women found them on her daughter, she waited until the middle of the night then found them feeding on her daughter! Eeek!

The reason I asked is we returned last week and I just want to make sure our room numbers did not match..... I think anyone who was there the last few weeks would want to know the room number so they could take precautions against infesting their own homes with their luggage and other belongings.

I just posted on the other original thread.

Is there a way to check the bed BEFORE you go to sleep?

Anything to look for in the room?
