Boardwalk area

Trying to decide where to stay this August. I keep reading that the BWI is right in the middle of the boardwalk area, but what exactly is there? I keep hearing about Jellyrolls, but know that is for adults only. ESPN as well I think, but that is not a big draw for us either. Besides these, what exactly is there to do on the Boardwalk?

Thanks Donald. That helped. It still does not look like our cup of tea. I'm left trying to decide between WL (stayed there before and loved it!) and BC (would love to try SAB, but unsure if it is worth the extrra money just for the pool). Thanks Again!

The Boardwalk area is just a really nice place to walk and spend time (at least for me). They also have entertainment at night - you can walk to MGM and Epcot, Fantasia Gardens, etc. I have photos of the Boardwalk on my site below.

We love the BW area. It's so nice to see in one of the rocking chairs on the deck and watch the people and the boats go by.

Besides the restaurants/clubs on the boardwalk, there are entertainers that perform at night. You can rent surrey bikes and ride around the lake, but beware of the hills!! It's a lot of fun, and one of my favorite things to do, to just sit and people watch from the back porch area of the BW in a nice rocking chair.

I love the hustle and bustle of BW...that's where we own DVC. We love hearing the Friendship boat horns as they travel up and down the canal, we love the pool area. In fact, my family actually likes the pool at BW better than SAB...go figure. The ability to walk to both Epcot and MGM is so nice. You can walk over to Fantasia Gardens and play minigolf so easily.

The terrific restaurants are a big plus. I guess it's just the whole atmosphere for us. It's not for everyone though. We are still looking forward to our first stay at VWL.

CoolDisneyCat, thanks for the maps! The area looks bigger (or BW looks farther away from BC/YC than I envisioned), but sometimes a map can be deceiving. I think we are leaning towards WL. Maybe we'll walk over to check out the area though to see if we would like to try it out on a later trip.

We LOVE the BWI. We were there in January for the third time. It is our favorite. We just love walking around the Boardwalk area, the theming and the proximity to Epcot and MGM. I love being able to walk back to the hotel after watching Illuminations at Epcot. Of course, you can easily walk to the Yacht Club/Beach Club, Swan and Dolphin. Lots of restaurants to choose from when you include all the resorts.

It's very pleasant.

I thought the BW was a whole lot of nothing. Other than the shopping available (and that really isn't much either), I didn't care for it.

I've walked around the BW hundreds of times just for exercise, and it never gets old for me. I guess each person is different!

I agree with those who like the area. BoardWalk is set up to resemble an Atlantic City boardwalk area with arcade games set up here and there. Someone mentioned the surrey bikes and those are fun. The pool areas in area are well themed. You can walk to or ride the boat between BoardWalk, Disney Studios and EPCOT, so this is a hub for those parks. The area is nice but not theme park exciting - a nice break from the hubbub.

The first time my DM and I went to WDW (1998) we "stumbled" on the Boardwalk area. I hadn't done much research ahead of time and hadn't been at WDW since 1983. I had read a little about it at what was then Deb's Unofficial WDW Guide (now allearsnet.com) so I knew a little about it. We went there to walk around our first night at WDW (late afternoon flight) and I really liked the feel of the place. I can't really say why, it's just kinda cool to walk around. We also had our first TS meal that night at YC. I think we ate at Yacht Club Galley. It was a enjoyable meal and our server was very friendly. The only drawback was even though we rode one of the Friendships over from BW, by the time we finished eating, they had stopped running! Oh no, we had to walk all the way around-not really that big of a deal, but who knew?

One of the things I enjoyed, that they no longer do, was the seagull cries you used to be able to hear. Haven't heard them since that first trip.

Also, a few trips ago (Jan. 05) my DM, DD, and myself enjoyed a leisurely meal at the Spoodles window while seated outside in the cool January sunshine. It was a way to keep the Disney Magic going without going to a park that day. We sat there eating our pizza and salad and playing my DD's new Stitch Trouble game.

If it was just my DM and myself traveling, I would give Jellyrolls a try, but since DD7 can't go in, we don't.

Of course there is the Baordwalk Bakery, everything looks yummy, ESPN Cafe, Flying Fish, and Spoodles.

I wouldn't stay there just for the shopping (very little) or the restaurants, but it has a great atmosphere. Don't forget to look into the swan/dolphin either. They are right next door and offer some great discount rates. The best part about any of those Epcot area resorts is the proximity to the parks. You can walk/boat to Epcot and MGM.
