Blue Man Group

MM-It might be longer...It tends to run 75 to 90, but don't fear. The kids will be entranced!

Just thought I'd post...We saw the show on 6/10. My daughter (13) loved it. I thought it was good. Mostly very funny. Loved the percussion. My mother (74) liked some of it but some parts a little too odd for her.

We had Poncho left BB 3 & 4 and CC 1. Didn't really need the ponchos.

Enjoy

As background, my sons & I saw BMG on tour with Tracy Bonham and Venus Hum 3-4 years ago. The show rocked our beautifully restored theatre and we loved every moment.

When you have a great show to compare it to, your starting point is, inevitably, going to be in some ways a comparison.

Summary Son (19) and Son (17) had the same feedback I did - we like BMG and we are always glad to see them, but if you've seen the touring concert, you need to be open to a different show. If you have never seen them (like Hubby), you will probably be none the wiser, and more than satisfied with the show.

What we thought (should there be any BMG lurkers):
- We had hoped for the same proportion of music (lots) to (little) non-music as the touring show; this show is more skit oriented
- Seems as though some of the show had relative dead spots - I would like to think the show has elements of experimental and will continue to evolve as they see what will work
- The crepe paper finale seemed like a big distraction - people seemed to enjoy it, but it was kind of mindless, pointless - wasn't sure how it integrated into the show
- The touring show was pure rock performance theatre - all themed around the dissociation of the world of information overload, the drudgery of work - all grounds for creative busting out and expression. This seemed more disjointed series of amusing skits, but not necessarily connected in any way to unify the show.

Bottom Line - entertaining; worth seeing - but adjust expectations (downward) if you've seen the touring show.

You cannot take pictures of the performance, but here are a few from the grounds:

The wonderful things about BMG is that they are constantly changing and looking for a higher place to take you. If you had seen them before this year, it was a different show than the rock show, and more skit oriented. The rock show was their take on a rock concert. The show at UO is their take on a family show. They are in the talks to be doing a "movie show" from what I've been reading. They will integrate parts of their show into a movie atmosphere.......which may be completely different from what you've seen before. Never the same.

I saw the show a couple weeks ago. I'd never been to a Blue Man show before but I could see it for free so I gave it a chance. I thought it was just 'Ok'. I mostly just liked the music parts (too few) and one 'restaurant' skit. The rest was mildly entertaining at best for me and at times, boring. Just reading off a sign or scrolling message wasnt that funny/interesting. I had no idea was the finale was about but I was almost choking at one time when I didnt see the paper coming and a guy next to me grabbed it to push it forward - it was around my head/neck.

anyway, Employees of Universal can get a 20% discount if you know someone that works there.

I've seen the touring show and I've also seen the theatre show in NYC and Chicago and now Orlando. The touring shows are completely different, yes filled with more music. The NYC, Chicago and Orlando shows (and I'm sure the Vegas show as well) are very similar. They are supposed to be disjunct and skit-like...that's what the Blue Men do. The name of the touring show this year was "How to be a Mega Star", so a large percentage of it was centered around music.

I wouldn't bank much on the Orlando show changing all that much. Especially since the other shows are so similar to this one. I prefer the small theater shows as compared to the ginormous arena shows which are much less intimate, couldn't see the eye movement, facial expressions etc. To me, that's what a Blue Man show is all about.

The paper finale is done in all cities permanent shows. Not much of a Blue Man show really makes "sense". If you're looking for more meaning or more music, I would choose Broadway, not Blue Man.

Judging from what others have said, most people I've talked to much prefer the smaller venues for the reasons I mentioned above. But there are a lot who like the arena shows as well, and for that reason....the founding members of Blue Man Group are smart!

There are three different elements that if you get one, you wont get the other two....know what I mean....
And apparently they are pretty big, I imagine they do this so that you have reason to come back.

I realized early on that it was random sketches w/ no theme that were meant to be funny or have audience participation. I was thinking beforehand that Blue Man would have some talent elements that would impress me. I just expected more knowing how much people would have to pay to see it. imo, if I was a tourist visiting, I would pay the $15 extra to see La Nouba at Disney instead of this show.

Running time is one hour 45 minutes.

Sight lines are excellent. Sitting close will not obstruct your view, although as someone noted seats on the extreme sides might have obstructed views.

The "poncho section" is more marketing than anything else. It's very un usual for stuff to reach that section. Still, better safe than sorry, I suppose. I couldn't help thinking that started it after some nut sued them for messing up their shirt.

I think the ponchos are uncomfortable. I prefer sitting just a few rows back in the center. Great view of the show and more comfortable.

There is a 10% discount for annual passholders.

I agree that it distracts from the fun of the show to try to "understand" it or "figure it out." Just go with the flow.

Almost everyone I talk to about it brings up Cirque du Soleil and I think it's an unfair comparison. They are VERY different shows. If you go in expecting "another La Nouba," you will most likely be disappointed.

there is no comparison to the Blue Man Group.....they are who they are and they most certainly are NOT Cirque.

I think this is another "research and find out about before you go" item. We rented a dvd of one of their shows and even the kids got into them. they are really cool being able to make musical instruments from what would be construction site trash :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

I hope they are there in the spring, we will definately go see them!!

I was SHOCKED to see that 4 tickets for us was $276.00. We wont be going to see them this year.

Seating Location
- Yes, every see had a good view.
- We were Row G (7 from front), dead center.
- The touring show we saw was not in an arena, but historic movie theatre (so we could see well)
- If you WANT to be chosen for any audience participation, it really helps to be sitting on the aisle or one of the rows where the staff can walk through.
