I'm sure this has been asked before but....

I was debating whether or not I wanted to get off the ship in Nassau. I have since decided to explore the island. Then I wanted to go to the Straw Market and decided against that because I had some bad things about it. Now I am debating doing the Blue Lagoon Beach day which seems like the way we will go but I have a few questions....

-For anyone who has done the beach day-did you enjoy it?

-Is transportation from the ship to the beach included? If not what is the cost of a taxi or other transporation?

-Is lunch included? If not, what is the food like?

Thanks for all your help. 6 weeks to go!

We did the Dolphin Encounter which includes the Blue Lagoon Beach Day. Before you get off the boat you meet in one of the bars and turn in your ticket for the excursion. The CM gives you a sticker for your group. Then you leave as a group off the boat, through the straw market over to a ferry boat. That boat takes you to the Blue Lagoon. It is a beautifully place with gorgeous beaches and clear blue water. You are given a ticket for lunch and a drink which you turn in at the restaurant there on the beach. You can get either a hot dog w/fries or a cheese burger with fries. We didn't get the drinks so I don't know what they offer. I am not sure of all of the activities that go on during the day because we were at the dolphin encounter but when we came back they were having a limbo contest. There are two boats back to the ship, one at 2:00 and one at 4:00. The ferry has chairs and tables with a little bar to buy drinks. If you want to spend some time at a nice beach I would recommend it. It is a lot less crowded than CC.

We just returned from Nassau, our 4th trip to Nassau, but our first since 9-11 which may explain the new security set-up. Things are a little different than what we remember before. I didn't intend to do shopping at what I remembered as the outdoor straw market, but we usually enjoyed walking by it and seeing the local flavor. It has either moved or it's just not there anymore. Now, all of the booth type shops are inside the customs building that you have to go through to get in and out of the cruise ship port area. I saw some signs about the straw market, something about it being moved or temporarily relocated or something, I didn't pay close attention. Maybe someone that is more familiar with the area can elaborate on when the changes took place, but I didn't see anything closely related to what I remember before.

there was a fire at the straw market? I kinda remember reading that on many posts before.

We did the Blue Lagoon Beach Day last year and we enjoyed it. Lunch and transportation were included.

It is a very quiet island there and the only time we were "bothered" was when a gentleman asked if we wanted a family photo taken which was fine since it was the only one we got as a family.

Also, I have to say I am an amateur photographer, and the absolute most beautiful photos I took came from this island. I have them on display at home and everyone always ask if it is really a photo or did it come with the frame when I bought it. It is very beautiful there.

Also, there are more hammocks there than people so there is no problem getting a hammock to relax in.

If you would like to see some of my photos, email me and let me know...I am more than happy to share them.

We have bee to the Blue Lagoon 3 times. 1988, 2002, and April 2004. The most recent time was not so good.

1) We waited one and a half hours standing around on the dock waiting to get on the ferry out to the island. The boat was full, so some people had an even longer wait. Previous times we got off the ship and onto the ferry in about 15 minutes.

2) There was no live band on the ferry boat, just a tape player playing 80's rock. Previous times there was a great carribean style band and dancing.

2) When we got there, we were informed that all of the snorkeling areas were closed. I really like to snorkel, and this was a big dissapointment for me. We were not even allowed to walk in the tide pools.

3) The food and drinks were ok - about what you'd get at your kids school cafeteria. The punch was good, but I relied on the rum to kill any germs since they used recycled milk jugs to serve the punch.

I posted this experience on this website a few months ago and several others posted much better experiences than I had, so hopefully we just were there on a bad day. Next time we plan on just taking a cab out to a public beach and using the $100 we save for something else.

Yes. There was a fire that destroyed the straw market....following the fire it was relocated to it's present location. ;)
