Blue Bayou and dessert-only ordering...a server's thoughts

We went to Blue Bayou today. The plan was to get only desserts, but then when I made the PS they said they would give DS a free birthday dessert (scoop of ice cream). We then felt guilty about just getting one dessert to share (if it had been the three of us we would have gotten two) and maybe some coffees, so we decided to have an early dinner. Shared the portobello dish while E devoured his ice cream. :)

The server had a moment to chat, and I told her what our plan had been, and that we felt weird about it (in theory I don't feel weird about it, but when it came to actually doing it, especially after they put rolls down and DS started eating his, it felt odd). She smiled so sweetly and genuinely and told us that a dessert only order would have been absolutely fine, and that we should have done that if that's what we wanted. That they are there to get us what we want, and we are NOT to worry if the order is too small or simple.

Set my mind at ease! Though I wish I had asked ahead of time.

Especially b/c I've really decided I do NOT like that portobello dish. The wedge salad (without sausage for this vegetarian) and the rolls they gave us were delicious and filled my tum completely. The server also brought out a dish of their potatoes (no charge) and they put me over the top, and only the was my dish put in front of me! I ate two bites of the mushroom (they gave us TWO EACH, even though it was one dish, with the split plate fee) and said "enough".

So, with the blessings of our server, NEXT time I'm just getting dessert!

That is good to know! By the time we were done with our lunch, I was stuffed and couldn't handle dessert :(

Maybe next time we'll have a mid-day dessert! :lovestruc

Hope you're having a GREAT time!

Don't mean to hijack your thread but does Blue Bayou serve the Monte Cristo sandwich for dinner or is it only a lunchtime menu item?

Thanks

We always just order dessert at BB, and have found them very accommodating. Your server is correct - unless the restaurant had some sort of policy prohibiting you from eating dessert only, it doesn't matter how much or how little you order.

We always tip well, though, since we are taking up a table for a relatively low check. Not over the top, but more than 20% as we're saving good money by only having dessert - we love the ambience, and appreciate there's a way to experience it without having to spend a fortune on food we don't really think it worth the cost. Dessert is the best part at BB, IMO!!

Hi Molly, was it Linda per chance? She was our server the last two times we were there and we think she is wonderful. She has worked at the Blue Bayou for 21 years. I asked her a lot of questions about her career, the BB, POTC, etc etc etc and she was just a pleasure. She never rushed us and seemed to really care about us and our experience.

To answer the Monte Cristo questions it is only served at lunch. I recommend the prime rib it melts in your mouth. I am getting hungry thinking about BB!

Thanks for letting us know Bumbershoot. I have always wanted to try BB but felt guilty about going and only ordering dessert. Maybe we will give it a try this trip.

I don't know, I think I'd still feel funny doing it. More of my own personal problem I know. LOL Just seems like such a fancy place to just order desert. I'm sure they'd always be nice about it, but I'd just feel funny!

Did you get a good water side table?

Thanks for the info, Molly, that's good to know! We were too full from dinner last time to have dessert. Maybe me and DD13 will go for dessert only while we're there.

Hope you're having a wonderful time! Happy Birthday, Eamon! :yay:

Thanks for letting us know! Our next trip, DBF and I are budgeting, and I would love to go to BB just for dessert since that would probably be the only PS we make that weekend.

Last time we ate there I wanted dessert soo bad but I was so stuffed from from lunch!

Yay for free potatoes! I love love love Bayou potatoes.

Hope you're having a magical time! And Happy Birthday, Eamon!! :dance3:

thanks for reporting:thumbsup2

still on the fence as to if we'll order full meal or not next month...

was worried as to possible attitude if we did

IMO, if anything, in addition to a generous tip; the table would be turned over quicker and allow for more seatings:confused3

Yep, we were at BB yesterday and we tipped over 30% because we split a plate. The service was wonderful and everything was SO good! (got the salmon with veggies and potatoes).

That's great to know they don't frown upon just dessert.

couple questions on the blue bayou

1) is this a family type resturany suitable for small kids ages 4 4 and 10

2) dessert sounds great but is there alot to choose from or is there just 2-3 things

sounds like a good way to experience a resturant on a budget.

It all depends on the kids. My kids are great eaters and they loved it (5 and 7) My son had the kids prime rib and my daughter had mac and cheese. Here's a link to the menus. http://allears.net/dlr/din/menu/menus.htm

Lunchtime.

But Cafe Orleans has it at dinner, I believe.

It's always a hot topic 'round here, and last year one person reported hearing another table be requested to leave b/c of a dessert only order. I have a feeling there was more than just that going on, but still, a small order is always talked about~

It was CarolAnn, and she was the fill-in for our server who went on break almost after we were seated (he went around with her, letting all of his tables know who she was and where he was going, and if he would be back by the end of their meal...I've never seen that and thought it was pretty cool).

That's why we ordered the portobello, we felt funny even though I knew in my head it was OK.

We didn't request waterside...we did that in September and it was fun, but we didn't feel it was necessary for this trip. Got a quiet corner, had a bit more light (I have problems seeing in the dark ever since I had Lasik), and got all the ambiance without taking a water table from a newbie! :)

That's how I felt, too.

It was my son's 4th birthday yesterday, and he was basically fine. :) They have wooden highchairs so they are set up for kids, and there was a 5 or 6 top at the water with several kids of varying ages (even a baby) and it was all just fine. They have a kid's menu so they are cool with kids.

3 items to choose from, but they also have vanilla ice cream and chocolate mousse available (those were offered to DS as his special b'day dessert). The ice cream was GOOD.

My DD5 stated that it was "too dark and creepy" in there, and that she couldn't eat her mac and cheese cause she was "freaked out." But that was DD5 being dramatic. It's noisy and busy in there, so I think she was just tired and overstimulated. She wasn't too nuts about PotC itself, either, which is kinda funny cause she's usually pretty cool with everything. The older girls, 10 and 12, though it was neat. They split the Tesoro Island chicken and liked it. I thought it was expensive and the food was okay but not great; however we'd do it again just for the very cool ambiance.

We went to BB for a late lunch on Mother's Day. I found it to be very quiet when we were there~wonderful atmosphere. We were with my in-laws, 7 of us, so we weren't waterside. My kids, DD5, DS9 and DS11, all loved it. My daughter is super picky, so we fed her chicken nuggets beforehand. She just had a glass of milk. I split the prime rib with DS11 and DS9 had the kids' citrus drumettes. We thought the food was great. Since it was late afternoon, there were a lot of kids in there, but everyone was well behaved. DD5 loved the pirate hat kids' menu and wore it over to Pirate's Lair after lunch. Next time I'd like to go for just dessert as we were too full after lunch to order dessert.

I agree with this except I thought the food was good not great (except the potatoes...OH MY GOSH, those were GREAT!)

We will definatly be doing it again, it is a cool experience!

cafe orleans offers the monte cristo sandwich at lunchtime. i was excited to learn this the fun way last weekend!

and cafe orleans is just across from blue bayou. so convenient!

If I only ordered dessert, I would leave a LARGE tip.

What kinds of desserts do they have? What are the prices?
