Ok... so we're coming into the 11th hour, so to speak. And the wife has tasked me with finding a Blu Ray Player. Now of course I'd like a deal, but ideally I'd like to be able to take advantage of our Netflix account as well. So tell me, budget buddies... what have you seen out there while cruising the Best Buys, Targets, and Wal Marts ??? TIA. :thumbsup2

Seems like I saw something on Best Buy's website?? I wasn't in the market though so I didn't pay close attention. without finding a sale, I'd check Walmart.

IMPORTANT--You'll need to connect your Blu Ray player to the internet. Can you run a cat5 wire to your router?

The cheapest Blu Ray players don't include wireless. The cost to add the wireless adapter, if you need one, will wipe out your savings.

Two out of the three players posted by a pp require an optional adapter if you need to use wireless.

having the same problem. Bought my mom a panasonic blu ray for $99 at costco, not realizing that you need a LAN adaptor to stream netflix and connect to internet (she does not have internet in the home) and that piece runs aobut 80 bucks. Do any blu ray players come with this piece? (we have a ps3 so no issues with that machine!, love it for blu ray but it runs $299)

AFAIK all bluray players have an ethernet port (LAN).. That allows you to access the internet with a wired connection. Some players include wireless and some sell an optional (added cost) adapter that lets you connect via wireless.

All require an internet connection. Your Mom needs an internet connection if she wants to stream netflix.

The two that I found locally this morning with decent ratings and a $100 price point are the LG-BD550 and the Panasonic BD65. The room where I'll be setting this up has our router and a drop ceiling, so running a Cat-5 cable wouldn't be the end of the world. WiFi would be preferable, but I'm trying to keep this budget, this close to Christmas.

The wired connection will be as good, probably better, then wireless. Might as well save the few dollars. You might find an off brand for around $80 but $100 for the models you listed sounds like a deal to me.

Bit of an education over the lunch hour. The hundred dollar WiFi "ready" player at Best Buy turns into a $200 player when you add the WiFi adapter to actually MAKE it WiFi. Went with a $140 model with built in wireless N. Be aware, folks. Look out for the WiFi "ready" models - I saw several of them - and understand that the deal you think you may be getting might not be such a bargain after all. Of course, if you are just looking for a straight up player and don't care about the wired vs. wireless debate, there are several players to be had for $100. Of course, as the guy at Best Buy reminded me, they keep updating the firmware to combat piracy, so you'll need SOME kind of connection to keep that player current with all of the latest releases.

Yep! AND don't forget the cost of the HDMI cable to connect the BR player to your tv (if you don't have one already).

Looks like you found your purchase. I was about to jump in and say taht I just snagged a $229 LG model that was wi-fi "built in" for $149 last week at BB for my sister's xmas present. It was the same one I have at home so I know it works well. Not sure if it's still available for that deal but since you already found one, I'm not going to go searching for it.

Happy holidays!

Not really a "debate". You could have saved $40 if you had an easy way to use a wired connection. You confirmed my earlier point, buying a WiFi ready player along with the adapter is likely to be more expensive then purchasing a WiFi equipped player.

PP is correct. Make sure you don't pay $$$ for cables. monoprice.com is a good source. Shipping isn't free. Keep adding stuff to your cart until your shipping goes to the next level then drop that last item.

Ok so I'm considering getting one for DBF for Christmas. We currently use our laptop as our Blu Ray player, it's quite easy actually, just plug and go. We have the HDMI cable, we have wireless internet, what am I looking for when/if I go shopping for a BR player? I haven't decided I want one for sure, I'm still considering. His birthday is Jan 7th so I may get it for his bday instead. :)

That hasn't always been the case, and I'm not even sure that that is the case today. I've got a Blu-ray Disc player in the trunk of my car that doesn't have any means of Internet access. (That's why it is in the trunk of my car... it's going to be a bonus give-a-way to some lucky family member at Christmas Eve.)

All require an internet connection.
It might seem so, since you do regularly need to update the firmware, but there are other ways, such as USB.

This year, the best brands for disc players happen to be the best brands for televisions: Panasonic, Samsung, and LG.

Sony is on the second tier (for both disc players and televisions) this year.

Insignia, Magnavox, Vizio are on the bottom tier.

This helps a lot! Thank You! :) I was considering LG, Sony or Panasonic as brands. Our big TV is a Panasonic, our little one is an LG, they are both great. :)

The OP wants to stream Netflix on his BR player. That requires internet access. My statement was in that context.

AFAIK all currently sold BR players have an ethernet port. I agree it's possible to use USB, or even burn an upgrade DVD on a PC to update firmware. That's not a consumer friendly way of doing things.

Insignia is BBs house brand. My understanding is LG is the manufacturer. I've seen some Maganox players sold for under $80. People buying that will probably more then "get their monies worth".
