BLT - What's the rush?

Okay - I would love to buy enough BLT points to vacation in a 2BR during Summer for 5 nights Sunday - Thursday with banking and borrowing. I calculate that I will need 77 points. I have a February use year. BLT is not opening until Fall 2009 so my first trip would probably be the first part of August 2010. Although I would really like to jump on board, I see no reason to purchase points and start paying dues until I am 11 months out from my first vacation. Am I correct in assuming that I should wait until September 2009 to purchase my points? If I purchase in September 2009 I would receive my February 2009 points but not have to pay dues on them for the majorty of the year (correct?). Then I could bank my 2009 points and borrow my 2011 points to make a reservation in 2010 (correct?). Am I correct in assuming there is no reason to buy BLT until until next year?

Your logic makes sense to me and is why we are waiting as well. The only argument against this thinking, that I have heard, is that BLT will sell out quickly. But those comments are typically from guides so I don't put a lot of faith in them.

I'm not 100% on this :confused3 ( apologies ) but I seem to recall reading a thread that referred to entire purchase amount not being charged or due until a particular date because BLT is still under construction; if I understood it correctly deposits are just being charged now. Also don't think maintenance fees (dues) start until BLT opens.

I do see your logic in not purchasing until later in 2009 however.

If you want August 2010 reservation you can book in September 2009 exactly 11 months from your check-in date; I'd guess just maybe purchase a week or so before your 11 month window date just to be sure you can in fact take advantage of the exact date your 11 month window would open.

We've just bought at BLT contract and won't pay any dues until the resort opens in Sept 09. We'll pay dues from Sept - Dec 09 then a full years dues in January 2010

Okay. Well that makes since. So, I guess the only reason to wait is:
(1) There are no current incentives for purchases less than 100 points.
(2) There is no reason to send DVC my money when it could be earning interest for the next 11 months or conversly there is no reason to pay interest on a loan for the next 11 months should I decide to finance an add on.

Reason to buy now would be:
(1) My guide states that new purchases will have a February Use Year and thus, this will be the first use year to sell out.
(2) Avoid and future price increases.

when BLT is close to being sold out - members will be told.

so if you are already a member -you can definitely wait.

for your time period - summer

sun-thur -
standard v - 205 point
lake view - 230
MK view - 280

like to travel in offseason so thinking 110 points - then every other year stay at the BLT in a 2-bedroom.

or go each year and stay in a studio.

Sorry to threadjump Wendy, but this question may be helpful to you also. Does anyone think there will ever be any incentives for contracts under 100 points at BLT? Or, I guess what I really mean is...Has there ever been any incentives for contracts under 100 points at any of the DVC resorts? Just curious.

***Edited for stupidity***

Whoops...I see now what you mean by incentives for purchases of contracts under 100 points. I was looking for a reeeeal good incentive (which I know better not to expect for lower point contracts).

See, here's where I have a problem with some of the guides and I'm not sure whether it's ignorance, mincing words (technically, Feb will be the first UY to sell out PROBABLY and LIKELY since it's the first they start sellin EVERY time they declare a unit (see below)... a LONG time from now), or using verbage that is technically accurate to create a scare that doesn't actually exist.

Logic would dictate that as new units are released for sale, they would have an equal number of points for all UY's. Even if your UY, in this case Feb, was sold out right now, just as soon as the next two units are declared next month or the month after, you'd just get them then. DVD WANTS members to KEEP the same UY on all contracts.

Basically, you'll be able to get your UY until we get to the VERY end of general availability. Then, of course, some UY's will sell out first. It's just a math problem but the problem doesn't exist until the VERY end unless I totally misunderstand how units are declared.

At any given instant in time, guides are selling a single UY on a declared unit to new members. Maybe that's the confusion. Just because they are currently selling Feb doesn't mean June isn't available OR that Feb won't be available AGAIN; it just means that's not where they are working from right now but if you insist on June or currently own June, you'll get June. Does that make sense at all? I don't feel like I did a very good job explaining what I was trying to explain. :confused3

My reason to buy now is that we're in Ireland and DVC do not have a license to sell here (like Canada) so if I want to buy from Disney I have to be in Florida to sign the papers. I happened to be in Florida when BLT was released and as my next visit isn't until August 2009 I didn't want to wait and have the small worry that it might sell out :scared: .

On each of our direct buy contracts we were told that they weren't selling our UY and it was strongly hinted that we had to buy the current offering.

Each time we told our Guide to forget it and we would buy resale. The shortest time that our Guide took to find our UY points was 3 days. The longest 3 weeks.

This issue is just another marketing ploy. :sad2:

they just start selling this thing - it has all use years - so don't even worry.

when it closer to your use year selling out - really think if you guide knows you are interested they will call you.

you have time.

I have a Dec. UY at BWV and am going to add on at BLT once I figure out the right timing. Given that, to our surprise, we've been going every November (and thus have the worst possible UY because there's no margin for error if we have to cancel), I'd like to get Oct. UY at BLT. Does DVD require add on's to be the same UY or will I be able to get Oct. if I insist?

I have another question about buying BLT -- what's the experience been with regard to on-time delivery at other DVC resorts? We'd want to go next fall (Oct/Nov) and while it would be great to go to BLT, how big a risk do people think there is that construction delays could impact the vacation such that I should just play it safe and book BWV next year? (can't book both and wait and see because by the time BLT opens, I'd miss the BWV banking window)

Thanks.

You could get another UY but would have to purchase 160 points minimum, essentially a new contract, not an add-on. Depending on how many points you were planning on buying that may be a good idea.

We bought an add-on the first day and the full amount is due immediately, MF's don't apply until he resort actually opens and are prorated that first year.

We have the same exact issue. We used to travel in january and now do October and have DEC UY. We have our BLT points in April UY but they made us buy 160. Since we had planned to buy 150 it was not too awful :-)

Our Dec UY points we will use for our EOY summer vacation so it works out great.
