BLT, Kidani & Jambo; a mini live trip report

For the record, last night I got up to TOTWL at appx 8PM. I couldn't get up to ask for service because I was by myself and would have lost my seat. I would imagine that the servers would rather wait on full tables of people than one person....their loss....I was planning on hanging around for awhile, but decided to leave right after the fireworks.

Still having a great time. Breakfast at the Wave (do order the cheese & bacon grits - so good, even a lifelong Midwesterner LOVED them!!) Then off to the BLT pool for the day. Kids had fun at the community hall in between jaunts in the pool. A little boy almost drowned at around 5PM but the lifeguard staff did a stellar job of acting quickly and quite literally saved his life.

Off the California Grill for dinner & another round of fireworks! Looking forward to a full day at Epcot tomorrow. Happy 4th everyone!

Wow - last's nights fireworks and dinner at California Grill were AMAZING. We had 7:35PM ADR's and arrived just on time. They took us upstairs and were surprised to find a lounge table - we just figured they were running behind, but much to our surprise, before we could get a drink order in, our buzzer went off. Check in with host and he starts walking towards the area closest to the observation deck....my heart just dropped. We didn't get by the window, but I think our table was even better if you can fathom that. We were right behind the window seats in the corner where you can see Space Mtn out one window and the GF out the other. So the castle is blocked - not a big deal. I think a picture would be worth 1000 words, but unfortunately I am having issues downloading photos into Photobucket with the DVC internet.

Needless to say, we didn't even need to go out to the observation deck to view the fireworks. Just enjoyed an nice leisurely dinner and watched through the windows. Our server Abdou was fabulous. For the first time ever, I ordered something other than the filet. I opted for the pork tenderloin with mushrooms and polenta and a zinfandel glaze and I loved it!!! I guess that means I essentially ate grits twice in one day which is a first for me. DD had mac & cheese and DS had the steak....the latter was a good 6 oz portion cooked perfectly medium rare. Quite impressive for a kids meal. I had the espresso cheesecake for dessert - really yummy. Kids got the dessert sushi which they always love. Suffice it to say that I've forgotten all about the lackluster service at TOTWL on the 3rd. I'm so over it.

Another full day today & another not quite rope drop arrival. We decided to go to Epcot and managed to leave BLT right at 9. But that's still a major accomplishment for my kids and I. We were inside the park by 10 and headed straight for Soarin' to get FP's and ride once. Kids were hungry right after, despite having had breakfast in the villa before we left, so we stopped at Sunshine Seasons for a couple pieces of fruit before heading to Test Track. Then off to Via Napoli for an early lunch.

We love Via Napoli, but I have to say - this is one expensive lunch, even without ordering an entree for each of us. We all got an aqua fresca (these are yummy fruit based refreshers that are not overly sweet. And something we can't get anywhere else - just love 'em.) Shared an order of arancini - fried balls of risotto and cheese - 3 of them to be exact and a perfect little starter for us. Then we split 2 individual pizzas - a sausage and a pepperoni to please each kid - I had some of each. Then gelato sandwiches for the kids and I shared my zeppole with them. The later being delightful fried balls of ricotta with chocolate sauce and whipped cream for dipping. Again, something I can't get anywhere else. Our check was close to $85 including tip and using our TiW discount. But we thoroughly enjoyed it. Always do.

We rode Maelstrom twice and the Gran Fiesta tour once, before heading back to Futureworld. Spent quite some time at Innoventions - kids did Sum of all Thrills twice, and we also did the Piggy Bank Adventure. Sad to say, we failed at saving enough for my retirement - lol. We also toured the House of Innoventions which is not officially open yet. Not much but an advertisement for HP and Yamaha.

Then we headed back to Soarin' to use our FP's. Then it was time for our early ADR's at Rose & Crown. Never dined there before and was not thrilled to be sitting outside on such a hot day. Never having been there, I didn't realize that so much of their seating was outside. Wasn't thrilled but we dealt with it - not like we had other options at that point in time. Kids got fish & chips and I just had a salad & shrimp cocktail. Didn't want another heavy meal. Food was ok but nothing spectacular. On a bright note, it was rather a bargain for TS, coming in at just around $40 with tip and TiW discount.

We did the Kim Possible UK mission, then strolled over to France and beyond. Shared a crepe there, then ended up in China where I found this nice bench just a few feet away from the Joy of Tea stand. Got ourselves some frozen drinks and camped out to wait for Illuminations. These are concrete benches right along the rail so you can sit and wait AND no one can get in front of you. What a find this area is - there is a tree that blocks the big globe thing, but the fireworks go off right there. It was quite spectacular. We were wowed. Even watched the sunset behind Canada while we waited, which was lovely.

Headed back to FW and rode Test Track one more time and Spaceship Earth before catching the monorail. It was evening EMH - we really weren't planning on staying but decided to take advantage before heading back to BLT.

I'm doing laundry now as we check out tomorrow and move to Kidani. Need to get some rest now so I can get up early and pack. It's been quite a long day and I am wiped out. Haven't decided for sure what we'll do before checking in at AKL, but I'm sure we'll think of something. Hopefully my internet connection will be better there and I can add some pictures for you.

Sounds like a great trip so far!!

Regarding TOTWL - I wonder if it suffers during busy times because the servers don't get much of a chance to practice! What we've experienced in the 4 times we've been there is that there were plenty of servers to cover all seating but even when it's slow (like one table per server - really) the service was far from stellar. A lot of engrossing conversations going on between them and the bartenders and not quite enough attention to the guests. And in our case it has always lowered the bill b/c we couldn't get the orders in without running them down and we elected not to do that.

I'm enjoying your TR! The Great Piggy Bank adventure is hard! DGD & I didn't save enough for her college!

Great trip report. Sounds like you and your children are having a great time!!!

The fun continues...sort of. We've been taking it easy the last few days. Checked out of BLT yesterday. Hopped on a bus for DTD; when we stopped at the Poly, it occurred to us that lunch there would be nice, however we didn't decide soon enough. So off to DTD for a little shopping, then back on the bus to the Poly for lunch. A little shopping there as well, then on the monorail to MK, a walk over to the bus stops and soon enough we we on the bus to Kidani.

One little glitch at check-in...I knew this place was big, but I had no idea just how long the hallways could be, and respectively, how far away a room could be. And most unfortunately, I have developed a rather bad case of Disney rash this trip, complete with some pretty bad swelling in my left ankle and foot in particular. I got about halfway to our assigned room and realized I needed to ask for something closer to the lobby. Front desk CM's managed to find something for me, just a few doors down from the main elevators. I'm so grateful. We have spent the last few days enjoying this lovely resort.

I am in awe at the size of the rooms - this 1 BR villa is HUGE and beautiful and oh so comfortable for the 3 of us. And we have not left the resort yet since arriving. We did get to swim before dinner. Kids were less than thrilled with the pool slide, and decided BLT had the edge in that department. My fun observation for this post would be cute little boy in the pool chanting, "just keep swimming, just keep swimming....."

We took the bus over to Jambo last night for dinner at the Mara. The highlight of the meal was the order of Zebra Domes that we shared. Then we picked up a few snacks at the store there before heading back to Kidani. Picked up some movies back at Johari Treasures, and then a board game at Community Hall. That was pretty much our theme for today. My kids were troopers and willing to postpone our HS visit to tomorrow so mom could stay off her feet as much as possible. We had breakfast in the room today with lunch and dinner at Sanaa. We are not adventurous eaters but thoroughly enjoyed our meals there. I tried some new things. Lunch I was not terribly daring but had a hamburger on naan with cucumber raita. Kids shared naan with me before our entrees but only mom ate the red pepper hummus. For dinner I had the shrimp in green curry & the short ribs with basmati rice. They were both fairly simple dishes and not overly spiced or too exotic for my palate. I would like to try something tandoori next time. Kids tasted my entrees so I think they might even try something off the grown-up menu next time around (and we will definitely be back - I thought the food was very good and an excellent value for the price - great staff too!)

In between meals, I got a wonderful LONG peaceful bath while the kids went to the Community Hall. That master bath is about 10 times the size of my master bath at home. I am 5' 10" and that jacuzzi tub was made for me!!! Also enjoyed watching the animals some as we have a Sunset Savannah view. Lots of zebras and giraffes - there is a giraffe feeding container on a tree right off our balcony. Zebras seemed to enjoy the rain while the giraffes disappeared. I even enjoyed the rain...seems like postponing our park day was a good idea for more than one reason!

More board games and movies tonight. This was truly an unusual Disney day for us, but still wonderful. I think I might be able to get used to this hanging out at the resort stuff...especially here - I do love it. We are off to HS in the AM and then one more night here at Kidani. Then off to Jambo CL for our last 2 nights. I am spoiled by the room size and extra bath here, but I think we'll manage. I will really enjoy having the lounge right outside our door. But we will definitely be back to Kidani someday!

Loving your report, I would love to stay at BLT, some day maybe : )) glad to hear you enjoyed Sanaa, were going to try it in September

So glad you are having a great time at Kadani. We really enjoyed it there. It is my youngest son's favorite resort. BLT is our home resort and liked it too but enjoying all the other resorts right now.

I'm enjoying reading your trip report! I'm glad you like Sanaa, it is my favorite restaurant. Definitely try the Tandoori Chicken the next time you eat there. It is VERY good and has more of a kick than the Chicken, Short Ribs and Basmati Rice dish you had. :thumbsup2

So we moved to Jambo CL yesterday just before noon. Had a little glitch with getting bell services to pick up our bags at Kidani; I called just after 10:30 and they said it would be 5-10 minutes...it got to be a little after 11 and I called again. Seems the person I spoke to forgot to write it down and he wasn't supposed to be covering the desk. They finally showed up around 11:30; in the interim I called the front desk and told them I was ready to check out as soon as bell services arrived.

Moving from Kidani over to Jambo is about as easy as moving resorts gets. Hopped on a AK bus after just minutes waiting at the stop...2 minutes later we were "home" again. Found a CM out front and let her know we were staying CL and she took us upstairs to the lounge. Kids grabbed some snacks and I waited to check in; it was uneventful except for having to remind the other CM's that we were waiting after several others came up to the desks. Our room wasn't ready, so I told them to text us and we headed for the pool. I really adore the Jambo pool. Found some lounge chairs under an umbrella in the front row; since we had my purse and some other valuables I wouldn't normally have brought with me, it was important for me to be able to keep an eye on our belongings. Pool felt great on a hot day. I just lounged near the steps by our chairs; DS took a nap under the umbrella after a quck swim and DD enjoyed the slide. At 3:25 we got a text that our room was ready. Gathered up our stuff and headed upstairs. Very thrilled to get a Savannah View that wasn't HA. My left ankle & foot are still swollen and the best thing for the swelling is a soak in the tub with my leg elevated up on the ledge. My only request for the room was a bathtub and I'd have been perfectly happy to be on the pool side. The savannah view was a bonus.

There was a nice arrival letter in the kitchen and some chocolate flamingos. Walked out to the balcony to discover it was pouring down rain - looks like we got our room just in time! Called to have our bags brought up and bell services was there just a few minutes later. I warmed up hot dogs in the microwave for a late lunch and that held us over until dinner, along with the evening offerings in the lounge (several cheeses & varieties of hummus, flatbreads, carrots, celery, olives, spinach & cheese samosas and curried seafood tarts.)

Dinner was at Jiko and was quite good. I had the filet with hominy risotto and asparagus along with some lovely De Toren "Z" red wine from South Africa; DS & DD had the kids steak with mac & cheese and green beans. They loved the mac & cheese so much we ordered another large side for them to share. We all shared the coconut bread pudding with caramel ice cream. The kids told me they would rather come back to Jiko for our signature dinner in September rather than California Grill! Kids promptly ditched me for more desserts up in the lounge; I waited for the check and joined them a little bit later. There were lots of cookies, brownies & krispie treats in the lounge and a small selections of little fruit and/or chocolate tart desserts.

After dessert we put on our swimsuits and headed to the pool to watch "Up" which was so much fun - we really enjoyed this as it was a very warm night. We sat in the hot tub for a while after the movie ended, then headed up to the room. Kids crashed - I went out to the balcony about 12:20AM and discovered 5 zebras out on the savannah - was very surprised as I've rarely seen animals in the middle of the night.

We grabbed breakfast in the lounge and are just chilling out in the room today. I put up the "do not disturb" sign and tidied up the room myself. (I hate having the room made up while we are in it.) I'll let them do the turn-down later. Lunch was more hot dogs and snacks from the lounge - we are addicted to the kettle chips! Kids are watching a Harry Potter movie that ends at 2:30 and then we'll head to DtD for an early dinner at WPE and some shopping. I think we'll swim later. Check out is tomorrow; we have an evening flight so we will probably head over to AK so kids can ride EE a couple of times - we are kind of "theme-parked out" and enjoying our downtime here at Jambo. I 'm really glad I booked CL for our last 2 nights - it's a great way to end the visit. When I get home, I will definitely add some photos!
