BLT Bathroom Doors

I've read a few BLT reviews about the bathroom doors in the BLT villas not locking and some not sealing completely closed so there is a crack you can see through. We're staying at BLT with 2 young children...and my DH will definitely not be happy if they can open the bathroom door while he is using the facilities. Does anyone know if this is being addressed?

I just returned from my trip and we stayed for 2 nights in a BLT studio. This was definitely the only negative I saw with the rooms.

The doors slide and you have to be sure to slide slowly or they can bounce back open. My children were certainly a little uncomfortable about the way it was set up.

I did send DVC member satisfaction an email sharing my thoughts that this is a design flaw and should be addressed--at least in terms of putting in a lock. I am not sure who thought leaving that little gap would be okay with most people.

Hopefully, it will be addressed, especially if those that stay that feel it is an issue, contact DVC.

Not that this is a big deal to us but why wouold they design it that way anyway. I just can't see why they would think most folks would not want a lock on the bathroom door and no crack to see thru. What were they thinking!! We will be there in Nov. and I will be able to check it out myself...smjj :confused3:confused3

That is pretty much what I said in my email. That something that sounded good in theory makes no sense in practice and that I can't believe there are a lot of people out there who are going to be okay with this design.

What I don't know is if it is the same way in the 1 and 2 bedroom units as well as the studios.

Even when my DH and I go in Dec by ourselves, I know he is not going to like that they don't lock--hopefully, things will be adjusted or fixed by then.

We don't allow any of our rooms at home to be locked. With young kids too many things could happen that might cause harm to them if they ever did lock the door. Our kids know not to open the door when its closed. Then again I could see a problem with a bunch of adults sharing a place and accidently opening the door.

We were at the Welk resort a couple weeks back and they had sliding doors for the toilet room, with turn locks that didn't really work. The toilet room was inside a larger bathroom consisting of sinks and shower and tub. This room had a lock. Is this the case for these rooms?

Why did they design the studio kitchenette and bathroom sink like they did as well? Some designer/architect on drugs must have done it. Really bad design.

We just got back from BLT and that was the only goof I saw in the room. We just made a rule that if the door was closed you had to knock before entering. My 13 year old would sing the entire time she was in the bathroom to make sure that no one walked in on her.

Part of the doors are frosted glass so you can see whether a light is on in the room. If the door is closed and the light is on it was safe to assume someone was inside!

that door is one major flaw. DH and I just returned from a studio, and while it was fine for just the 2 of us, it would be a problem for more. We both said that if our 18 month old grandson had been with us, it would have been a hassle. He loves to open and close doors and this one would have been easy for him to do. Once he figured it out it would be non stop, and he wouldn't care who was in there or what they were doing, and the tub is also in that room. Also, the "bathroom" vanity area in the "Kitchenette" area was a big negative for us. It was really unpleasant for us to have to leave the toilet area to wash your hands in the next room. I dried my hair in the hallway or the sleeping area because it just skeeved me to think of doing it where we would be preparing our meager studio meals - coffee, toast, etc. There can't be more than 2 feet of space between the "bathroom" vanity and the kitchenette counter. Get some teen females in there and it would really gross me out. I can't picture us staying in a studio there if we go with others. Storage space in that area is ingenious though.

We must be odd balls.

We very rarely shut the bathroom door and we have never locked a bathroom door in 40 years or so. If we are in mixed company, it's understood that a shut door means that the room is occupied a open door means that it isn't.

I wonder if this is a new thing with new DVC resorts...My understanding is that the locks were removed from the THV's as well.

A PP made a great point about her 18 mo old grandson. My 28 mo. old nephew is completely into opening and shutting doors right now, and having no lock on the bathroom would not be a good scene.

I hope this is not a new trend for the DVC resorts, and that they resolve the lock issue soon.

Great post!!

Just remember...that gaggle of long-haired teenage females MAY have just checked out of your room. Couple that with the housekeeping staff that MAY have only spent 30 seconds cleaning the area afterwards.

Very poor design on Disney's part!!!

Same here...minus a few years. Closed door = don't open it. I understand the toddler problem, though.

And the doors in the Contemporary are the same way, FWIW.

Yes, but at the Contemporary (unless I remember differently), the toilet is in its only little "room", with its own door. In the case of BLT, the toilet faces the sliding door.

Maybe it was just our door, but it was very easy for it to slide open, even if it was bumped by someone walking by it as they headed out of the room.

And, the gap that is there just makes you feel that there is little privacy. If the door actually shut, like a pocket door or something, regardless of a lock, then it would be better.

I have to agree. From the time I was a child a closed door meant someone was inside and you never opened the door without knocking first.
I have never locked a bathroom door, other than at public stall facilities.
I just don't see the big deal here.

I think it is because it is a sliding door that slides into nothing and therefore, it can pop open a bit on its own, just from someone walking buy it.

The door not locking could be a problem for some people. I am ok w/it because we don't usually lock the bathroom door at home. We usually stay at CR & the bathroom door doesn't lock there either. I would hope people would knock before opening the door. I am surprised to hear the door could open accidently if bumped. That is not good at all. I am mostly concerned with the gap. That could make people feel uncomfortable. Until I see a picture of it, or see it in person next July, I can't really decide.

I agree, that is just yucky!! Even a dog knows not to "groom" where he eats or sleeps:rotfl:

I dont like touching anything until I wash my hands, especially door handles. I have a pump soap in my ownerslocker and will leave in the bathtub so I can wash my hands in the tub before exiting the area.

I will also pack a shower mirror for Dh so he can shower and shave in the same area also.

We will be in a studio in October and I will be spraying the door handles down with Lysol!!
I did not like the design or layout of the BLT studios but for Dh and I it will do. We are excited to stay in our new home.
I loved the 1 bed and that is where we will stay as a family.
