BLT - Accessible??

Does anybody have info on wheelchair accessible units at BLT? We are considering DVC, but need to be reassured that there will be accessible units to sleep 7people!

I believe the ADA would require by law that there be accessible units. You may want to visit our DISabilities board here on the DIS for more information.

There is not a lot of information on the accessible rooms yet but one interesting thing is that the grand villas look like they have an outside entrance on both floors so it we will have to see if they included accessible bathrooms on both floors.

ADA requires that 20% of each unit type have provisions for accessibility. Lately, this has become more complicated for builder / developers as advocates for the hearing impaired are saying that they should be able to stay in a room that has fire alarm visual devices, but NOT all of the extra things provided for those with physical disabilities as they feel it is discriminatory to fuse these two types of disabilities.

Since the 2 bedroom units will sleep 9 you should be able to get an accessible unit in that category for you needs.

don't worry.

since the CR was originally designed with just a few HC rooms - expecting BLT to have several.

you know that may have more to do with the name not including Contemporary upfront.

they might have had to 40% handicapped if they did. (to make up for the few that CR has)

really expecting it to have more than 20% required by law - simply because the CR has so few.

so don't worry - few of the regular DVC members will want a HC room - they have less space to store stuff (so the wheelchair can fit under stuff) - and the shower stall is replace with a roll in shower.

if you also need a studio and want it to HC - it won't have a tub at all - just a roll in shower.

pretty sure the doors for a hc villa will have to be a little bigger - probably designed different.
