Blood Types? Anyone know about them?

Not necessarily. rH neg is recessive. If both parents carry the recessive rH neg, then a child has a 25% chance of being rH neg.

And was born 2lbs and turned orange when I came out. I had 2 Sisters born before me, that did not make it, but after 2 transfusions I made it. ;) My Mother had the Anti-body for all those to recieve the "shot" so no-one else would have to go thru what she did. :teeth:

Its a simple enough test to do and if you just mention while they are getting the yearly blood work drawn for their physicals they will run a typing on it.

These days where ins co's rule they may run it but you may have to pay for it. Or they may not run it at all because it isn't "necessary".

My twins were A+ and A- and I don't know what type DD is. She didn't need blood.

I know that in my lab if the mom is A,B or AB (all Rh pos) we don't type the baby as there is no mother or baby risk involved.

Just food for thought.

My dr. couldn't tell us the blood type of our dd either...not that he didn't want to, it's just that both times we had our dd's blood "typed", it came back "indeterminate". My dh is AB+, and I am O
To be clear - I'm just goofing around here and thinking out loud. But I wonder what a nurse would do if the test came up type O. (Again, NOT suggesting anything about Beca here). Fathers with AB cannot have children with type O. Does the nurse just give the parents the results, or do things come back "indeterminate"?

Mine were bloodtyped at birth. oldest is A+ like her daddy. I forget what youngest was...I believe A+ as well (but not sure). I am O+.

Actually, hospitals didn't routinely check blood types on babies unless the mom was a blood type negative or they needed blood right away for something. I don't know if they still do that. I don't know my kids' blood type, I am O+ so no need to check. I am not even sure what DH is. If I were a negative, they would have tested DH and the babies. It is a good chance the pediatrician couldn't tell the mom the blood type because they didn't have it on record. The only time your blood type is important is if you are a negative mom, you are donating blood or if you need to receive blood. They will type you in all those cases even if you "know" your type already anyway.

Our hospital draws blood on all babies I believe. Don't recall why though--one of the newborn tests.

I am O+ and my babies need to have the Coombs test. Oldest must have been negative b/c I never heard a thing. Youngest was positive. They told me that all moms with O+, they admin that test on the baby.

They do get their blood drawn for another newborn test though. Just cannot remember what it is.

My dh is AB+, and I am O+....I didn't think it would be a big deal, but it kind of was. Our dd was SEVERLY jaundiced at birth, and got worse over the next few days (I could only hold her at feeding time, and then she had to go back under the lights, for the first 4 days :sad1:) The hospital said that sometimes when parents have the O/AB combinations, the babies are born jaundiced and have some of these issues. The nurse said it was not uncommon for blood typing tests to not work on these babies. :confused3 She said to wait a few months, and then have her typed again. What's really weird is the second test came back "indeterminate" as well. This last time, our dr said to just wait until she is older. He said even if you know your blood type, in case of emergency they always type it again anyway. We'd love to know her type, but I guess it is just not "meant to be". I figure we will just check everytime she has blood taken, but I am not going to draw blood just to know her type.

Of course, when she was teething, dh figured out that her blood couldn't be typed because she was actually a vampire!!! Glad those days are over!! :rotfl2:

Your daughter sounds like mine--though she wasn't severely jaundice--she developed it.

Your dd probably had a positive Coombs test. Did they do one on her?

My DD6 was blood typed at the hospital when she was born, and I am not rh-, and she did not need blood. We are both B+. I wonder why your dr. could not tell you. It is a good thing to know!

Could be anything....

I'm O-, my ex-hubby was (something)+.

My 2 boys - one is O+ and the other is mine, O- / a universal donor.

She could be any combination.

My ins. company didn't pay for it but it was only 10.00 so I figured I could afford it LOL. If they were doign just that it would have been more I am sure since it would have been its own visit but since it was done at the routine yearly blood draw it was only 10.00.

My DD was asking what blood type she was. I have no idea.

I'm AB Positive. DH is A Positive. Does anyone know what that could make her? :confused3

The following is a joke:

Your DH is A positive but are you positive your DH is the father.

Not necessarily. My GrandMom was RH - and my dad was positive as was my mom. I took the RH - from my grandmom. My sister is positive. Yes we have the same parents. My aunt on dad's side is also RH-. My 2 children both took the RH- Daughter and son born 6 years apart and my DH is positive. :sunny:

Most babies are typed in the hospital. I know both of mine were. It's important to me, because I'm Rh negative (A-). My soon to be ex was Rh+ (A+) so I had to get the butt shots.

Same here. I am AB neg and my ex is A+ so I had to have the shots. (Gamma globulin or something like that.)

Sure they draw blood for various tests but one of those tests isn't necessarily a blood type test. They may type all babies now, but when my kids were born they didn't do that routinely.

my kids are teens and I have no idea what their blood types are.

the doctor drew blood when they were born and probably typed it. but the hospital records are not part of the record he keeps in his office, so his office records don't show what blood type each girl has.

This thread makes me think that I need to find out DD's blood type. I am O negative, but I have no idea what DD's father was. I did ask our family doctor once, but it was not in her file.

She had her tonsils out when she was five. Would the hospital release this information to me?

Our hospital does not routinely draw blood types on baby unless we know there is going to be a problem with incompatibilities or if the baby is going to need blood for some reason. The newborn screens that are sent do not include this, they are for metabolic disorders only.

You can sign a release for her records from the hospital. Usually you have to pay per page for the chart.

If she is a minor then you could sign a release and get the info. But as has already been posted they won't take your word for it if she ever needs blood. They will automatically type her.
