My DD was asking what blood type she was. I have no idea.

I'm AB Positive. DH is A Positive. Does anyone know what that could make her? :confused3

Your kids could have A, B, or AB blood types.

If I remember my high school biology correctly, that would make her have a 50/50 shot at being either Type A or Type AB.

Thanks. I once asked her doctor what type she was, and he said he couldn't tell me that - I forget the reason. :)

She'll be one or the other... just ask your Ped to check on your next visit. I think it can be done with a finger stick.

you have an A gene and a B gene.

your dh can have either 2 A genes or an A gene and an O gene.

O is recessive, so she can't have type O blood.

if she gets an A from you and either an A or an O from her fahter, she'll be an A.

if she gets a B from you and an A from her father, she'be an AB.

if she gets a B from you and an O from him, she'll be a type B.

Very good info. :)

Yup! I forgot about that darn recessive O! :teeth:

The doctor would need a sample of her blood to tell. It makes a difference what combination of Type A genes you have.

But, her rH is positive for sure.

The blood types for both of my children were in the initial papers that we came home after giving birth at the hospital. If you have those papers accessible, maybe they put the info there? Also, the pediatrician should have it in his/her records.

What???? He won't tell you?? Certainly they must know! I know they did my daughters during her first years annual physical. They do blood work every year but the first year they adding typing on to it and then then gave me a cardto keep at home with her blood type on it.

Most babies are typed in the hospital. I know both of mine were. It's important to me, because I'm Rh negative (A-). My soon to be ex was Rh+ (A+) so I had to get the butt shots.

DD turned out A+ (no shots for her, YAY), and DS was A- (but it doesn't matter to him!)

This is one of those little weird moments, but I remember when I had the twins 2 years ago, they typed their blood in the hosptial and within the first hour or two from birth we knew.. we had issues with ABO....I'm O+ and Andrew is A+, Katie is A-. I remember very distinctly thinking, oh, when/if she has a baby she may need to get those shots. lol.

To the OP, its possible the pediatrician just hasn't typed her blood, that's why he can't tell you. I never knew my blood type until I was pregnant and specifically asking what it was. I think its one of those things that is good to know, but likely not that many people do. My husband didn't know his until last year, although after having the twins I think we were fairly certain he was A (its been a long time since either of us took biology)

I'm A- , DH is O+ , the twins are both O+. In fact on one side of my family my boys are the first + babies in 3 generations. I remember trying to talk my way out of that shot. But it ended up that I needed it.

That's weird that they won't tell you. My pediatrician told me their blood types at their first check up.

I'm O- and DH is O+ both of our kids are O-. They found out right after they were born because had they been positive I would have needed another shot because I had an Rh negitive.

Actually, hospitals didn't routinely check blood types on babies unless the mom was a blood type negative or they needed blood right away for something. I don't know if they still do that. I don't know my kids' blood type, I am O+ so no need to check. I am not even sure what DH is. If I were a negative, they would have tested DH and the babies. It is a good chance the pediatrician couldn't tell the mom the blood type because they didn't have it on record. The only time your blood type is important is if you are a negative mom, you are donating blood or if you need to receive blood. They will type you in all those cases even if you "know" your type already anyway.

My dr. couldn't tell us the blood type of our dd either...not that he didn't want to, it's just that both times we had our dd's blood "typed", it came back "indeterminate". My dh is AB+, and I am O+....I didn't think it would be a big deal, but it kind of was. Our dd was SEVERLY jaundiced at birth, and got worse over the next few days (I could only hold her at feeding time, and then she had to go back under the lights, for the first 4 days :sad1:) The hospital said that sometimes when parents have the O/AB combinations, the babies are born jaundiced and have some of these issues. The nurse said it was not uncommon for blood typing tests to not work on these babies. :confused3 She said to wait a few months, and then have her typed again. What's really weird is the second test came back "indeterminate" as well. This last time, our dr said to just wait until she is older. He said even if you know your blood type, in case of emergency they always type it again anyway. We'd love to know her type, but I guess it is just not "meant to be". I figure we will just check everytime she has blood taken, but I am not going to draw blood just to know her type.

Of course, when she was teething, dh figured out that her blood couldn't be typed because she was actually a vampire!!! Glad those days are over!! :rotfl2:

I loved learning to type blood when I went to school for lab. I typed myself (A pos).

For those who don't know- Oneg is the universal donor (anyone can get O neg) . Its often used in trauma cases where they don't have the means or the time to crossmatch blood types.
