I imagine that it would depend on the BP. I've never heard of high BP going away except if the condition is from some illness but that would probably be handled differentky.

I've been on mine for over 15 years and I doubt that I will ever be free of it.

Dh was on BP meds for about a year... He had mild to moderate hypertension (think 150/95 most of the time.) The meds made him cranky, gave him a headache, and he was tired all the time.

So, he dropped 15 pounds, started exercising every day and cut his salt. Within a year, no more meds. Of course, this was when he was 28. He's 33 now, and still off the medicine.

I still monitor him pretty closely. He was 142/88 earlier tonight. He has a STRONG family history of heart disease. His maternal grandfather died of a massive MI at 64, both uncles had heart attacks in their 30's, one died last year at 42 from a heart attack. I hate that DH is walking time bomb, but I watch him like a hawk.

Thanks!! Maybe there is hope LOL..of course I am somewhat um.... OLDER then your DH,,so maybe I am on them for the long haul....I am thinking of buying that new MACHINE they have out (RESPRATE)--seems to work for a lot of people,,NO DRUGS no side effects,,,,if it got me off the meds,,would be well worth the $299 price tag,,,,,Thanks again..

Yes there is of course the weight issue. Exercising and slimming down can definitely help. I was slim when I got my hypertension and it hasn't changed now that I've gained weight. I would love to lose weight though just to see if it might help a bit.

Oops. Sorry to imply that it can always be controlled by weight management and exercise...it just worked for DH a few years ago. As a nurse I know that it certainly is due to a number of factors and sadly, medication is the usual route, and most people do remain on them forever.

DH was lucky...he was young and otherwise healthy. Of course, I forsee a number of antihypertensives, cholesterol lowering drugs, and a baby aspirin in his near future. It's a genetic fact.

P.S. He would have you believe that he needs sedatives to be married to me...but don't listen to him...his BP is probably up and he's talking out of his head. :rotfl:

I was on BP meds and got sick of having to remeber to take a pill everyday
so i cut out 95% of the soda i drank and started really focasing on my salt intake

than i started uping my water intake

and now 2 years with no meds....

But if i am not careful and get into to much junk it goes right up

we moniter it at home just to be safe

My BP goes up because of stress and doctor visits. I was on meds for 10 years, then when my h left, my BP went down. I was off meds for 3 years. Now it's back up again, so they started me on medicine again.

My doctor said it's very controlable with diet and exercise, of course not for everyone, but for alot of people. I imagine if I started kick boxing, my bp would go down. ;)
