Let me preface this report by saying: I've always wanted to go to Disney for Halloween. Halloween is my favorite holiday (though I love Christmas quite a bit as well) and the thought of my favorite holiday paired with my favorite place had the ability to send me into flights of fancy starring Mickey shaped Jack o' Lanterns and Disney Villains.

My Mom is almost always my Disney partner in crime. As such, she made the trip with me - as usual. No one quite gets my obsession like her and with good reason: she is obsessed as I am. Possibly the reason why we're both like this is she instilled her own love of Disney in me as I was growing up.

It just so happened that my best friend was holding her wedding reception in beautiful Franklin, TN on the weekend of the 21st as she had already been married in Hawaii on the beach the week before. So, I figured I would attend the reception and see my best friend off into married life and then head down to WDW for Halloween to celebrate my own reluctance to fully grow up.

Using my Annual Pass discount, I made reservations at Pop Century. As you probably already know, each area of the resort is themed after a different decade. I discovered, while standing on the balcony of my floor, that they are making progress on an area that will lie across Hour Glass Lake that will house the decades of the 1900s - 1940s. I can only imagine that these will be uber cool.

However, now in the present, we found ourselves situated in the midst of the 1950s.

bowlingpool.jpg

When we arrived at the resort, it was already dark (obviously, the above photo wasn't taken then) and we were hungry. After getting settled, we headed over to the Magic Kingdom for Extra Magic Hours. I wasn't sure what to expect as EMH in September at MK was a madhouse. Crowded (it was Labor Day weekend) and not enough Cast Members considering the amount of people in the parks. However, this time was completely different. We arrived and ate a quick bite at Pecos Bill and then walked around, happy to be in the World. There were hardly any lines. We walked on to Buzz Lightyear and Pirates, where I basked in the glow of my animatronic Captain Jack.

We then made our way back "home" for some sleep as we knew we had a long day ahead of us and wanted to be well rested. I went to bed and dreamt dreams so strange that I couldn't even begin to articulate them. Disney seems to have this affect on me.

In the morning, we got up and headed over to Epcot. Since the Food & Wine Festival was in full swing and I had never experienced it, I was excited. Decent portions of authentic international cuisine for anywhere from $2 - $6 a plate. As soon as we got there, I picked up a free guide at the front gate and tried to pick what I would eat knowing that I could only hold so much food and still have room for food at the Liberty Tree Tavern that evening. After picking up a guide, I was greeted by these guys:

beautyfoodwine.jpg

I took a bunch of pictures for my best friend Kim (the same BF who had just gotten married) and was sad that she wasn't with me to see them because I could just see her face lighting up and her squealing as B&tB is her favorite film of all time. Beauty and Belle were also there, but just not in this shot.

After this, I went to The Land to get Fastpasses for Soarin', which remains a must everytime we return to Epcot and then headed to The Living Seas to see the new Nemo attraction. This attraction was very low-key, but had little to no wait. Some very cool technology in this ride which makes it look as if the characters of the film are actually swimming alongside the real sealife they house in TLS. I found this pretty impressive and was simply glad that this portion of Epcot was back up and running after many years of being "down." I remember riding the original attraction when it opened in the 80s when I was just a wee thing. It's a vastly different world than it was in the 80s and WDW amazes me with the technology they introduce into their parks.

After Nemo, I made my way to Turtle Talk with Crush. I had heard AMAZING things about this show since last Christmas when it was in previews, but I had somehow missed it. When I went in September, the line was atrocious, but I was determined this time. Luckily, there wasn't a big line and I was in the theatre within fifteen minutes for the next show.

Let me just say: I'm a geek. And when I see Disney pull stuff off like this one, I get a little weepy. I can't explain it. It's like a sense of pride or something even more strange. And my heart swelled with it watching this show. When we walked out of the theatre, I could hear the adults saying, "How did they DO that?" while the kids were CONVINCED they had just had a conversation with Crush. For those who have yet to see the show, basically Crush, the surfer turtle from Finding Nemo, comes onto a screen which resembles a big window that looks into the sea. Once there, he takes questions from the audience and answers them. And it is amazing. He talks and his lips move as he answers questions in real time. He moves with each question. If someone were to tell him to turn a cartwheel, I believe he could do it. It's simply amazing. Mom and I discussed the attraction afterwards and went over different scenarios of how this might work. Mom is convinced that the voice actor who plays Crush wears something similar to the Gollum suit that made Gollum articulated in the LotR movies. But even that requires lots of post work to make it look fluid. I'm thinking there might also be some very, very advanced Veepers style (those little online cartoons or photos that say what you want them to say) technology here, but that wouldn't explain the movements. So for now, I can only explain it this way: It's magic. Pure and simple.

After Crush and Soarin' - which was fantastic as always and smelling those orange groves as we fly over California always makes me dizzy with happiness - we made our way to the World Showcase launch boat so that we could start in the middle of WS at America and work our way to Canada. We'd do the opposite way tomorrow. I had decided on a New England Crabcake (yes - very international, I know, but I have a serious love for crabcakes and I was not going to pass up the chance to get a gourmet crabcake for 2 bucks, dude - as Crush would say) and a Moroccan Kefta. Mom had something entirely different in mind until she saw mine and then she got jealous and copied me.

Both were wonderful. The crabcake (I keep writing crapcake) was fantastic.

crabcake.jpg

The Moroccan Kefta, however, was my favorite. Basically, this is the Moroccans' version of a hamburger. But it is spicy and served in a bread pocket. It rocked my socks. Seriously. I had to take them off they were rockin' so hard. You know what? They were Mo'rockin'. Oh snap! (run from the cornball humor! Run!).

kefta.jpg

We soon realized that we were quite full and that if we had any hopes of eating our Halloween dinner at LTT, we must stop. With that done, we continued through the Canada side of World Showcase (I call it that because it begins with Canada). I found myself stopping in the United Kingdom and, being that it wasn't all that busy, looking around the unexplored corners of the area. I always find more surprises within WDW each time I visit and this was no exception. To the back of the toy shop there in the UK, I found this:

carpetbag.jpg

As many times as I have been through here, I've never noticed that. I was giddy. And photo happy.

Then I saw this:

maryblocks.jpg

And this:

dollhouse.jpg

Mary Poppins was one of my favorite movies growing up and this just made my afternoon.

Soon, we saw that it was time to head back to the hotel and get ready for the Halloween party. So, we left the only place were one can truly travel round the world in a day and made our way to the bus stop.

Next up: Exploring Pop Century, a good dose of childhood regression and Halloween at the Magic Kingdom.

:thumbsup2 Great Report! I felt like I was there with you, I love Epcot! I have never been during MNSSHP, but I cannot wait to hear your description so I can live it through your words! :cheer2:

Thanks for posting.

Part 2: Childhood Regression, Big Wheels and "Mom, What's an 8-Track?"

Now it was time to make our way to the Magic Kingdom for MNSSHP. Neither mom nor myself came prepared with a costume despite all our talk of it. There was simply too much going on and we never got anything finished. So, we dressed as festively as possible. Mom in her "Boo" shirt and I in my Bride of Frank shirt. We also purchased glow sticks for under a buck at Wal-Mart before leaving home and some blinky pumpkin necklaces as well. Those blinky pumpkin necklaces came in handy. More on that later.

It had been warm that day. Not hot, but warm, but there was a "change in the wind" and people were talking about a cold chill moving through in the evening. Knowing how volatile Florida weather can be after spending Christmastime here, we opted to bring our hoodies.

Once we were armored and ready to go, we decided that, since we had time to kill, we would explore our hotel. First stop, the 1950s.

jukebox.jpg

Mom is a 50s baby and yes, that is her pushing the A on that gigantic jukebox. The titles of the songs on this thing were hilarious such as "He's Got a Class Ring, but No Class" and "My Cars Jacked Up, but My Heart's Broke Down."

There were some animated Disney touches that coincided with the decade the film was released. For the 50s, it was one of my Mom's favorites, "Lady and the Tramp."

lady.jpg

There she is again. Voguing for the camera.

She was sassy that day:

classic50s.jpg

We then made our way to the 1960s where I found these guys:

playdoh.jpg

As you entered each area, the "background music" changed. Each area played the music of that decade.

Then we found ourselves in the 70s - the decade that birthed yours truly.

77.jpg

Lots of great stuff came out of the 70s:

71.jpg

And then, my childhood got blown out of proportion - technically speaking that is:

bigwheel.jpg

Just seeing that brought back memories of riding down my neighborhood street with my fake walkie talkie and radioing into some imaginary headquarters in the sky for that day's mission. Yes. I think it's quite evident that I was a nerd.

And this guy:

mickeyphone.jpg

I coveted this phone as a child. Look how darned adorable it is.

We also spotted some window decor. When I stayed at the Grand Floridian, I didn't see this and I kinda missed it. Here's a pumpkinhead:

pumpkinwindow.jpg

And a couple celebrating their 60th Anniversary at the World found this in their room:

anniversarywindow.jpg

And what are the 70s without a little Twister?

twister.jpg

Amusing moment while viewing this next scene. A woman and her teenage daughter were passing by and the daughter points to the 8-track here and asks, "What's that supposed to be?" I thought my I was going to need a cardiac unit on the scene:

rubix.jpg

I then braced myself. It was time to go to the 80s and being as I am a child of the 80s, I was excited. I was instantly accosted by these little fellas:

pacman.jpg

Underneath the giant pacman game lie the pool and Billy Idol was playing. I swear to you that for a moment, I felt like I had just went back in time and it was summertime and we were sunning with the radio on. I have full intentions of staying here during warm weather so I can spend one day near the pool and just regress. It's going to be rad.

However, enough of the hotel browsing. It was time to make our way to the Magic Kingdom and MNSSHP.

Thanks!

I had a BLAST doing Halloween at WDW. This was my first Halloween there and it really was awesome.

Hopefully, I'll be able to post the next part today or tomorrow. :thumbsup2

I love your pics! You got some great shots of pop :)

I wish we had waited to see Crush :sad2:

because I know we would have enjoyed it.

I'm loving seeing all the Pop Century photos! We stayed there for a couple nights at the end of our Disneymoon, but I never got to really walk around and enjoy it. :sad2: We stayed in the 50's by Tramp & Lady and that lovely bowling pin pool! :) I really wish I got to do more exploring! I must go back! I didn't even get to see the Mickey phone!!

Crush is just fantastic. To see how the kids react to Crush just encompasses everything that is Disney Magic for me. :wizard:

You must go back. This was the first time that I've made reservations that I was able to get into Pop for some reason. I can't get in during the AP discount window because it's apparently all booked up. :(

If I can swing it, I might try POFQ!

Part 3: This Duck Ain't Never Had a Friend Like Me

After arriving at the MK, we were still a bit early. We arrived just as they were doing the flag retreat. As many times as I've been to the MK, I've never managed to be at the front of the park when they do this. From what I understand, they choose a Vet who is staying at Shades of Green and honor him during the ceremony.

mkband.jpg

Then, with the band playing "My Country Tis of Thee," they lower the flag.

flag.jpg

The flag is folded and then given to the veteran as the Star Spangled Banner is played. The man in the center, holding the flag, was that day's honoree. He was both a Desert Storm and two time Iraqi Freedom veteran.

flagretreat.jpg

It was a moving ceremony and when they called his name and the crowd erupted into applause, I admit, I kinda teared up. No matter what you think of the current political climate, these guys deserve respect for going out and doing what the rest of us are not able, willing or brave enough to do. You could really tell that the ceremony meant a lot to him and that was what made it so special.

After that, I naturally gravitated toward Pirates. While there, I found the Pirate Tutorial was in progress.

yetanotherjack2.jpg

I am intrigued by the expression on that blonde woman's face in the above photo. What exactly was she so smug looking about, I wonder? Hmm. I simply can't imagine. pirate:

yetanotherjack.jpg

And the unsung hero of the show, Mack. Wonderful as always.

mack.jpg

Next thing on the agenda was our Ressies for one of my favorites, Liberty Tree Tavern. Before it was time for the reservation, I sat outside and watched people arrive in their costumes. As I did, I made a friend:

duck.jpg

He just came right up to where I was sitting and sat behind me, staring out at the people walking by. I tried not to scare him away and he sat behind me the entire fifteen or twenty minutes I sat waiting for my reservation time to arrive. I almost hated to leave him when it came time to check in at LTT.

However, our food awaited us and we checked into a very busy Liberty Tree Tavern. When I arrived at the table, I found this little dude had already staked out our table:

ltpumpkin.jpg

And after ordering, it wasn't long before our dinner was out:

ltdinner.jpg

One of my favorite things about the meal is the salad with the Strawberry Vinigrette dressing. It rocked my world as usual.

Of course, one of the great things about LTT is the character interaction and Pluto was the first one of the gang to stop by our table.

withpluto2.jpg

Pluto had apparently had an accident in the pumpkin patch. He looked very adorable.

Pluto was "on" that night. Here he is acting a little bit "goofy" with someone's wand at another table:

plutowand.jpg

And let me just tell you, I love Chip and Dale. These are some of the best characters in the parks. They are fun and mischievous when they are on their game. Tonight was no exception and I've giggled about this moment off and on since it occured.

withchip.jpg

When Chip came over to the table, I had food in my mouth and I was trying to say, "This is good!" He's kinda standing there, tapping his foot, waiting for me to get out the words and I finally manage, "My compliments to the chef!" Upon hearing this, he starts jumping up and down and pointing to himself. I gasp and ask, "You cooked this?" - always playing along. He nods fervently and then he did the cutest thing that I wish I had on camera. He starts dancing and then he starts doing the cabbage patch! :woohoo: I swear, it was so cute and I giggle everytime I think about it.

After dinner, we headed out into Liberty Square and staked out our place for the most amazing parade I have ever seen at Disney - the Boo to You parade.

Next up, the Headless Horseman and a parade that even video can't do justice. Trust me - I saw the video before I saw the actual parade.

It's great to read a fellow geek's take on Halloween in WDW. You just need to get to the headless horseman part ASAP ... :thumbsup2

I Just got back from spending last week in the World. We hit the Haunted Hayride on the last ride of the night for 10/31. The Headless Horseman's wife was on the last few trips videotaping her husband (atleast that was her story)

The Wishes fireworks began while the hayride was in progress, with the storyteller incorporating them via some great improv work.
