We no longer sell LPs at our store for various reasons and when we had a substantial donation bought in, we had to sell them on. We took them to the record specialist over the road how spent a long time looking at them, before saying, OK, they're basically rubbish, so here's £1.00. Having been to just throw them away, we were ok with that.

Five minutes on, I was talking to a customer, who turned out to be an expert and he told me to go and get those LPs back! I went back and was refunded etc, rather grudgingly. When I got back to the store with them, I noticed that the record shop had been pricing them.

£6.99 each for a stack of 20.

That's £139.80.

Cheeky wotsit!

Make sure you know what the records are worth before you bring them to these record stores to sell. They'll rip you off.

Cheeky bugger!:)

Same thing will happen if you take your old comic books to the comic book shoppe to sell them, and don't check the list prices first.

I know, I used to work at a comic book store and saw it happen. Some of the guys treated it like a big score when someone came in and was innocently happy to sell rare books for a few dollars.

Now, to be fair, some customers would come in with the Comic Sellers Guide in their sweaty little hands, trying to tell us that this book of theirs was "worth" hundreds of dollars. Those guides often overprice, and there was no way we could turn around and sell that book for the amount listed.

I personally think the right thing to do is to estimate what you think you can sell the item for, and then offer the customer about 50 percent of that price. After all, the store does need to make a profit.

It wasn't ever my decision to make, however, when I was working.

Buy low sell high...sounds like the free market to me.

It happens all the time and is why it is important to know what the item you are selling is worth. That doesn't mean you'll bet $100 for that baseball card that a book says is worth $100 but you'll be educated and will know that a $0.10 offer is a bit low.
