Bless Your Heart!!

This reminds me of a joke I read years ago. (I'm sure there are different variations).

Two southern belles were sitting on a bench, when the first one said to the other, "My husband is so sweet to me. He buys me diamonds every year on our anniversary."

"Well isn't that nice," said the second.

"And he buys me a new car every year on my birthday," said the first.

"Well isn't that nice," replied the second.

"And what does your husband do for you?" asked the first.

"He sent me to finishing school," answered the second.

"What good is finishing school?" asked the first.

"Well, it taught me to say 'Well isn't that nice' instead of '**** you!"

Disclaimer...posted my someone who has said "y'all" on a routine basis since she could talk!! I love the south!

I do declare, Mick, you certainly have a way with words.;)

It's sanctimonious rationalization.

Same as passing a thinly veiled insult with a smilie.

If I want to insult someone, I'll come right out and say it.

Sanctimonious? Nice big word there. Unwarranted, but looks good.

Most people know that being direct is not always appropriate, bless your, naah, I won't say it. ;)

I'm also one that was always taught to offer a drink, food, a chair the whole bit. The more I hear the more southern I think I might be. lol

"As long as the heart is sufficiently blessed, the insult can't be all that bad, at least that's what my Great Aunt Tiny (bless her heart, she was anything but tiny...) used to say."

"Southern ladies are too polite to tell you to **** off, so they have instituted code words."

"Bless her heart, she can't help being ugly, but she could've stayed home"

See, I told you we use the "bless your sweet lil 'ol heart." I just didnt say it was when we were really mad or pissed. ;) Really though, I rarely use bless your heart or bless your sweet lil ol heart in a negative way.

Now the term "mess" also has different meanings like, Johnny is a mess meaning Johnny is a fun loving kind of person or a cut up. Or, I'm fixin a mess of collards for dinner. It's all in the the tone.

Also, a true southerner can use yall 3 times in a sentence. For example, "Yall, didn't I tell yall to put yalls stuff up?"

I never use Bless your heart in a sarcastic way. It's always meant as a little blessing.
Now I will say unfortunate-as in she's unfortunate looking instead of saying she's bone ugly.

Awww...Teresa, you are one of the cutest southern ladies EVER!! I've heard your voice on the phone and it is ADORABLE!

Between NC for 17 years, AL for 20 and TN for 12, I am proud to say I am a true Southern woman. I love all the old southern phrases and I "bless peoples hearts" a lot. I didn't realize how many ole timey phrases I used until I moved to TN. People at work make fun of me (in a good way, bless their hearts). I'm actually a little sad that I've lost the edge off my AL drawl in the past 12 years.:rotfl:

Southern women are cooler than grits!!!!! (And grits are cool in the South)

As a proud southern woman - 37 years in southeast Georgia thank you very much - I had to chime in. We had someone come to work for us that was from "out yonder." She was confused that people seemed to always get offended when she would say things. Someone told her that next time she found herself chewing on her foot to smile sweetly and say bless your heart. She just ain't got it right yet (pronounced 'right chyet'). Oh well, she ain't from around here, bless her heart ;). I love talking southern :hyper2:
