Bless Your Heart!!

I reside "down south" and take no offense what so ever. It would be like me commenting that people from Boston say "wicked cool". It's just a phrase that is used in that geographic area that stands out as different from somewhere else.

:thumbsup2

YUP, NortheasternER here, right here and YUP, we say WICKED COOL all the time!!!! :thumbsup2

See ya latAH alligatAH's.....hahahahaha :lmao:

Born and raised in the south and I never heard "wicked cool" till the Dis Boards. But...I say "Bless your heart" to somebody on a daily basis. You'd probably hear my grandmother say, "Bless your pee-pickin' heart." It can, as some have pointed out, be used to negate a negative comment, but it's also meant from the heart many times. This I know. ::yes::

I've heard the expression all my life. The odd thing is that even though I heard it often when I was a child, I didn't actually say it. Now I say it often, usually to negate a negative comment, but my children don't ever say it, although they certainly know what it means. Maybe it's an old age thing! Something else I heard as a child, when referring to someone (usually a "nar-do-well" relative), was "They don't have a pot to pi** in or a window to throw it out of". That little jewel slipped out of my mouth about a year ago and took me totally by suprise. I didn't even know I remembered it. I LOVE being Southern.

I say that all the time! Once I was in the car with my parents and I saw this guy and I said "oh what an ugly man" and I felt SO terrible about it because that's such a mean thing to say so I followed it up with "bless his heart." My parents cracked up laughing although I really did feel bad about it.

And sometimes I do just use it sincerely and it's not used to cushion something negative I've just said.

Both times I have been to Florida, if I chatted with someone in line at WDW or at a restaurant etc, whenever it came up that we were from CA, they would say "well bless your heart" and it did seem like a "nice" way to express a negative opinion. Guess Southern folk don't think to highly of us West Coasters, lol. I'll take people who can truly express themselves anyday over those who sugarcoat their negativity. I'm sure it can be a fine expression, it just seemed a little mean (disguised in sugary sweet syrup) when we heard it.

Yeah I say it too like to soften the blow. He really is dumb as a light post, bless his little heart. To me it is like you poor thing. We say it kinda funny like.

I live in the South, but I haven't heard the expression in years.

Guess nobody wants to "bless your heart" anymore, huh?!:lmao: I hear it daily here. I say it both lovingly and to soften the blow (or as you "poor thing".) I am sure a lot of Southerners here on these boards read many a post and say "bless their hearts". :rotfl:

We use it at work ALL the time. We say "bless your heart" as a preface to anything we say about someone. like..."bless his heart, he has no clue what he is doing!!" It makes us feel better about being a smidge not nice.

"God love him" is similar. God love him, he's not the sharpest tool in the shed, bless his heart :thumbsup2

I hear it all the time here in Indy. Mainly from a woman I work with, hmm, maybe she's from the south.

That was my mom's favorite saying "Bless your pea pickin' heart." Where the pea pickin' came from, I have no idea.

We used to have a coworker that would say, "Bless your heart," at least 20 times a day. I would hear her on the phone blessing hearts all freakin' day long. She made that phrase one of the most annoying things ever.

Yeah, I can see how that might get annoying! With ANY phrase.

My favorite saying is

Well arent you just PRECIOUS????? Or isnt he/she just precious?
With a big smile and all ;)

Im usually thinking you big dumb *** when i say it.

I've lived in the south for 24 years and never really thought about it but you are exactly right. :lmao:

I love many of "sayings" not sure what to call it that folks from the South say. Also love their cooking. Can tell to look at me. :rotfl2:

Afterall I do have some South in me since my birthmother is from the South. :thumbsup2 Sure wish I knew exactly what state though, then maybe I could find her.
