Bleached hair question

What??? No, don't tell me that! I've always heard as you age you should go lighter because DARK hair is aging. Consequently, I've just had my hair highlighted. I kind of like it for a change, but I certainly don't need to look any older. Also, I'm not very objective about this kind of thing, so I guess I need to ask someone, but I can't image anyone being honest with me about this.

I used to be white blonde, and now that I'm older, and it got dirty blonde, I highlight, a warm, natural-looking adult shade. I joke with my colorist to give me the color of 2 of my dd's - both white blonde. He said that only children, up to the age of 18, can wear it well, same with black hair. The older you get (and I don't know your age), the more you want your color in the middle - nothing drastic.

Well, I'm in my late 20's and I have kids, but I still like to be hip! LOL :hippie:

Just one more question.... When you got the roots done, did it all match up well? I don't want it to look wierd or freekie or anything like that!!!!

TIA

ETA - I will be going to a stylist for all this. I would never attempt to do it myself!!!! LOL

It only matches up as good as the stylist applying the color. It is very easy to not go far enough up the roots OR to go too far and overlap the bleach. Both make for one BIG mess. Often on bleached blonde hair, the roots are "hot" meaning they are only brought up to a very warm color of blonde and the ends fade out as the months go on so you can easily get an uneven look.

Kim, you are doing the right thing. Like the PP came back and said, white blonde is very harsh and ages you. Too dark does the same thing.

No no, he does do a very good job. I think it was just that I was HOPING for more than you can get from just highlights, KWIM? I've been with him for about 5+ years now, and he also does my mother and sisters hair. I totally trust him. As I said, I think I was just expecting to much from highlights... but then again I'm not a stylist, so what do I know!

Personally, I think you should try highlights again. I'd go "heavier" and not so much lighter.

Your upkeep is going to kill you. :headache: 4 weeks is pushing it. 5 is useless. Your roots will be soooo bad at 5 weeks that you will look horrible (no matter how pretty you might be otherwise). Don't ever do a color process that you can't afford to keep up. Taking bleached hair back to brown is expensive, hard on your hair and never looks great for many months.

If you decide to go white blonde. You'll probably love the first time. But the touch-ups are a lot of time and money. The right placement of the product means everything. So your second, third and forth visits will be how you'd need to judge.

OK guys, how about this..... Really thick, light blond streaks / highlights? Not as white as I was going to go since it will only be streaks, but light non the less. I have blond hair right now (natural-ish because I have highlights as well) but I guess its more of a dirty blonde. Do you think I should go with more than one color blonde? I want it to look nice, maybe a little fun/funky, but nothing to crazy!!!

TIA

Heavily highlighted, one color of blonde will look the best, imo. You'll have enough natural hair to give some depth so you do not look like Marilyn Monroe type blonde. Truly, I'm thinking you are doing the right thing by avoiding bleaching out your whole head. I hope it goes really well for you in the chair on appointment day!

Thanks for your posts. Truthfully, I still really want to bleach my whole head, but I DON'T want to have to go for touch ups every 3-4 weeks, and I don't want to totally ruin my hair. Plus I'm scared it won't look really great, and I'll be stuck with it. My appt isn't for today, its for next Friday. I'm still waiting for him to call me back, so when he doesn't I'll let him know about the changes. I just hope he doesn't call me while I'm in the dentist chair, which is where I'll be very soon :guilty:

Thanks again to you and everyone else!!! :goodvibes:worship:

He's probably dreading calling you back to talk you out of it, lol. j/k

I'll tell you, a very good friend of mine decided to go bleached blonde several years ago. She wanted me to do and I declined. I gave her all my reasons and she was still dead set on it. I sent her to someone else. She did it and loved it. She stopped by that same day and said, "See, doesn't it look great?" And the colorist had done a very good and it looked nice enogh (but washed her out).

I asked her if she had her next appointment made. She said, "no." And I told her she'd better make it and make it for about 3 weeks. She then asked me, "Well, since it turned out well, won't you keep it up for me?" I said," No, the *fun* had just begun." lol

Sure enough, she went back and had the roots touched up 3x and then she was over it. She was broke, washed out, and her hair was very dry. She then started the long process of putting color back into her hair. She has said many times, "You told me so." But, I refrained from saying it. ;)

There are people it works on and can pull it off :) and there are people who *think* it looks good but they can't really pull it off. :( Once the hairdresser is doing it (both has a loyal retouch client and making money), it is hard to tell the client they need to go back to something else. Sorta like trying to come off an addictive drug...getting there was easier than going back.

Oh and good luck in the dental chair. That's where my phobia lies.
