Bleach Burns at All Star Resorts

My son and I recently spent a night at All Star Sports after a cruise. When we entered the room, there was a strong bleach smell, but I didn’t think much of it. I woke up the next morning to my legs burning and sores that were later diagnosed as chemical burns. My guess is that they bleach the white bedding and it didn’t get rinsed out.

I‘m booking a new trip for June and considering All Star Sports again, but am concerned about the bleach issue.

Has anyone else experienced this or was I just unlucky?

Sorry that happened to you! All bedding gets washed/serviced at the same location so that could have happened anywhere. I wouldn't worry about staying at Sports again.

Not sure how only 1 part of the sheet would cause irritation to just your lower legs? Any irritation on your arms? Feet? All the sheets & towels at WDW get washed the same way. Plus I have never smelled bleach in dry laundry. I would think what you smelled was some type of cleaning product. Which of course could cause skin irritation if you are in contact with it long enough. Any chance you are allergic to the soap?

That looks like PMLE to me - polymorphic light eruption. They used to call it a sun allergy or sun poisoning. It appears several hours after sun exposure, usually at night. I've had it a couple of times, only at WDW, sometimes on the legs, sometimes on the wrists and backs of my hands. Once I made sure to use sunscreen regularly, I never had it again.

There was no irritation to any other body part.

For those trying to diagnose, I saw a doctor already. As for sun exposure, it wasn’t hot that day and I even had on long pants, so I’m positive it wasn’t from sun. The areas absolutely burned and did peel after a few days. This happened in October. Not to mention, the attached photo is of a rash from dilute chlorine which is the same thing as in bleach. It looks exactly like my legs did.

The room absolutely reeked of bleach. In hindsight, I probably should have complained, but I just figured it was from a thorough cleaning. I wondered if they overfilled a machine, poured in bleach, and it wasn’t able to rinse. I’ve had similar things happen in my own washer.

Knowing all laundry is washed together at a separate location does make me feel better about booking there again. I assumed each resort had its own laundry and I worried about the machines or practices at this location.

Then I don’t understand how it could have been the sheets. Did no other part of your body touch the sheets? Something so localized there would have needed to be contact on just that part of your body.

I have been an RN for over 41 years. The hospital linens are always bleached. No patient, even the premie infants has ever had a chemical burn from the linen.

Might you be allergic to the detergent? Sure. But a chemical burn from bleached linen just isn’t possible.

The assumption was that there was an area that didn’t get rinsed or that they over filled the washer with linens and then poured the bleach in causing it to have a higher concentration in that area.

If it had been an allergy, I would have expected it on my arms and face as well since those touched the bed too.

My son and his wife stayed at All Sports in early December. We walked them up to their room with their luggage and the room reeked of mildew and bleach.
The smell bothered my pregnant daughter in law so much that after one night in the room, they were not able to stay there. They paid nearly 3 times as much to move over to Coronado Springs to salvage the trip.
Would never book a family member at Sports again.

I had stuff like that- went to dermatologist and was diagnosed with contact dermatitis.

This is similar to what I was told. I came into contact with an irritant. Seeing as there was a strong bleach odor, it was assumed that that was the irritant.

See, there's that word again :).

https://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/contact-dermatitis#1 doesn't list bleach (straight or not completely rinsed from sheets) as a potential irritant.

Here's https://www.verywellfit.com/leg-heat-rash-golfers-vasculitis-3435796 some information about Golfers Vasculitis, which an Internist or GP might not be familiar with, but a dermatologist could reasonably be expected to.

Yes but they don’t know what causes. I hadn’t changed anything I used. Was put on mild steroids and mine hemorrhaged onto itself so they couldn’t test to see what caused since I had been on steroids. I had 4 weeks of strong steroids. Could have been something you rubbed against and came in contact with pants leg just as easily as sheets.

What mine turned into . Do kinda see a hidden Mickey!

I had a similar rash but on my sweatie areas (butt crack, under arm, back of leg) that spread to 1/2 my body over a month. Dermatologist did test and said contact dermatitis or allergic reaction. He said it could have just been what they wash the linen or towel or even soap I used in shower . I've had allergic reaction hives before and eczema so wash everything at home in sensitive skin stuff and soap. Shouldn't have been heat for me as I train in summer for triathlons and running and use to heat and sun. Next trip bringing little bottle of washing liquid for couple clothes wash, my soap for shower. Thinking of bringing sleeping bag liner to sleep in
