Bleach Burns at All Star Resorts

This is similar to what I was told. I came into contact with an irritant. Seeing as there was a strong bleach odor, it was assumed that that was the irritant.

Yes, you probably can’t in contact with an irritant. It might even have been the laundry detergent. But that doesn’t make it a “chemical burn”.

And a bleach smell in the room is not from linen. You can not smell bleach on dry linen, no matter how it was laundered.

My son and his wife stayed at All Sports in early December. We walked them up to their room with their luggage and the room reeked of mildew and bleach.
The smell bothered my pregnant daughter in law so much that after one night in the room, they were not able to stay there. They paid nearly 3 times as much to move over to Coronado Springs to salvage the trip.
Would never book a family member at Sports again.

WOW! I am so sorry. There would be zero chance I would pay an upcharge to move from a room that was not habitable, and IMO a room that has mildew and smells of bleach is inhabitable. I am not one who complains much, but I would have insisted that I was be moved and that DIsney manage how that occured without cost to me. This is fare different than moving because you did not like the view, or the noise level from the elevator disturbed you.

I have sensitive skin, and have never had that problem at the Sports. Or any Disney resort.

Whatever it is, it wouldn't make me stay away from any particular resort.

This is similar to what I was told. I came into contact with an irritant. Seeing as there was a strong bleach odor, it was assumed that that was the irritant.
Find something white, ideally in a natural breathable fabric. Wash it in strong bleach. Dry it. You will not smell the bleach.

The strong bleach odor in your room was likely in the AC unit. They use bleach to clean the mold/mildew that builds up in there, as well as in the bathrooms. I have stayed in numerous hotel rooms in humid climates that have that strong bleach smell. It's never from the actual linens in the room.

I have severe allergies and sensitive skin. Numerous dermatitis events. I have had to be careful with detergent and dryer sheets used since I was a child. However, my eye and nose allergies were more affected by the scents than skin irritants.

I have gotten hives from hospital sheets and gown before. The plaques would come and go, but a burning sensation persisted. My original nurses gave me Benadryl, but the 3rd nurse refused and denied my discomfort. When my surgeon arrived soon thereafter, he quickly diagnosed an allergic reaction to the linens. He requested hypoallergenic replacement linens. Within a few hours I was comfortable and had no apparent repercussions. I forgot the term the hospital used, but they would separately wash a small amount of linens for patients with irritation issues that didn’t use their regular industrial solvents. Going forward, I always requested the special sheets if I stayed overnight at the hospital. I could handle it for a few hours, but my skin would feel inflamed with standard sheets when I go for tests etc. This particular hospital has won awards for being a ”clean” hospital. I don’t know what they use in their laundry that kills hospital germs, but it is way to harsh for my skin.

I have not had issue with Disney sheets nor any hotel linens. Sometime washcloths will irritate my nose when I wash my face, but the contact time is minimal. I agree your calves were irritated by something, but I agree with most posters that you should feel comfortable with Disney sheets in the future.

Well, obviously something has irritated your skin and I am sorry for that. I feel for you. My hubby and younger daughter both get skin irritations easily. Anything can set it off, especially for my hubby. If someone had a dog in the room that leaned up against the bed and my hubby touched it with his leg, he would get a rash. Sweat too much, rash, certain laundry detergent, rash. We actually travel with our own bed sheets for this reason. The towels do not seem to bother him, probably because the whatever bleach like cleaner they use. I don't think that it is a problem at a certain resort, just bad luck. I actually started getting a rash one year and it turned out to be the sunblock that I was using but it only irritated me on my upper chest area. Unfortunately, there is no telling what actually caused your irritation. Hope you feel better soon.

I've seen the laundry facilities
They wash mass amounts together
Their machines, equipment is nothing like you've seen before. Nothing like what you use at home
The process they use will not cause extra bleach to be left on the sheets
That doesn't mean you didn't get a reaction to something
Just not what you think

I’m not a doctor but I almost never get rashes or skin irritations, but one thing I have gotten is the golfer’s vasculitis after visiting Epcot. I’ve never gotten in anywhere else, and one time it wasn’t a sunny day. I honestly think the heat from the pavement causes it.

personally I see a difference between your pic and the chemical burn one. The burn is slightly upraised and some skin has been rubbed off.

Yours looks like mine did, like it pooled from the inside to the surface of your skin with no skin visibly missing.

Skin irritarions are extremely difficult for doctors to diagnose, especially if they didn’t happen that day. If you informed the dr of the smell, he chose a likely candidate because in the end, there wasn’t much to do to fix it and it wasn’t likely to recur.

If you are over 30 especially, I think vasculitis is a likely candidate. The solution is just to take breaks with your feet up if possibile at Epcot and hydrate. Icing it once it did happen did provide some relief.

I’m sorry that happened to you whatever it was.

Btw, search for “Disney rash” for 8000 pics of golfers vasculitis that looks like yours. It’s a thing a lot of women experience at Disney and even more especially Epcot and over 40.

I always assumed that rash was from insecticides and crowds walking and spreading molecules all around.
Sometimes I think I am allergic to my own sweat. Is that possible?

Has anybody tried the individual packets of Aveeno oatmeal mix to add into bath water . I understand not wanting to sit in bathtub but filling it high enough to sit on bath tub ledge or stand in ... This product is sold for babies also . I think it leaves an invisible soothing layer of protection and helps to sleep.

And I always fill bathtub up with hot water and then drain .
And definitely run the wash machine & dishwasher in the DVC villas before using . Do not let your imagination think about what previous guest might have used machine for but starts with a v or a d and goes with flu.

For those trying to diagnose, I saw a doctor already. As for sun exposure, it wasn’t hot that day and I even had on long pants, so I’m positive it wasn’t from sun. The areas absolutely burned and did peel after a few days. This happened in October. Not to mention, the attached photo is of a rash from dilute chlorine which is the same thing as in bleach. It looks exactly like my legs did.

The room absolutely reeked of bleach. In hindsight, I probably should have complained, but I just figured it was from a thorough cleaning. I wondered if they overfilled a machine, poured in bleach, and it wasn’t able to rinse. I’ve had similar things happen in my own washer.

Knowing all laundry is washed together at a separate location does make me feel better about booking there again. I assumed each resort had its own laundry and I worried about the machines or practices at this location.

Looks exactly like “the Disney rash” like everyone else has said. I got it last summer in August staying at All Star Movies and went away a few days after I got home. Room had no bleach smell. I’m not saying I’m a doctor or anything but sometimes you gotta call a spade a spade.

I wonder if the housekeepers had done a special cleaning of the hotel room for a guest.
