Woke up with a horrible bladder infection. I've flushed my kidneys with lots of water and have taken peridium to ease pain and spasms but it's not helping that much. There are no walk-in clinics here, my doctor doesn't have an answering service and the only clinic within a reasonable driving distance is closed until Thursday. :headache: Anyone know of a remedy until I can get worked in the be seen by a doctor?

I don't know how effective these remedies are, but I hope at least one of them helps! Sorry you are experiencing pain. :(

Here are two suggestions from the below website:

#1 Cystex/Bladder pain relief

Cystex can be purchased in any drugstore, and it can really work if you are having painful urination. It works by numbing the nerves in the bladder and urethra that are causing all the discomfort. It can turn your urine an orange color, so don't fret if you see the toilet bowl looking a little bit bright. It really can work if you need to wait to be seen by a doctor, and you can take several doses in one day. Check out all the helpful info at www.Cystex.com.

#2 Alka Seltzer

Believe it or not, alka seltzer can really do a great job at relieving pain in the bladder and urethra. Just follow basic dosing instructions on the box, swallow it all down at once, and notice an improvement in your ability to empty the bladder without too much pain.

That's weird. The filter has blocked out the site. Is associated content not allowed?

Also, I'm wondering if the Cystex is just like peridium. It sounds like it with the orange urine. I really don't know. I had a similar problem (used the peridium) a few weeks ago, but it went away. No infection.

How can your doctor not have an answering service? Is that even legal? You don't have a CVS or Walgreens near you? They both have clinics. Maybe talk to you Phamacist for suggestions.

I guess if you don't have any options and can't tolerate the pain head to the ER.

Never heard about the alka seltzer but you can believe I"ll have some within minutes! Many thanks!!!! :thumbsup2

I've never had a bladder infection, but my sister gets them and she swears by cranberry juice when she feels one coming on. Something to do with the acidity.

I get these infections. I have had good luck with Cystex and drinking cranberry juice.

Yeah, I think the Cystex is more or less peridium. And yes, there are Walgreen and CVS pharmacies over in the next town but neither have clinics. :sad2: This new place I live isn't a town...it's a *small village*...with nothing!!!! Oh, and the doctor's machine has you referred to the ER which is a 5-8 hour wait.

THANKS everyone! Leaving for cranberry juice, Cystex and alka seltzer.

Take it from someone who suffers from bladder/kidney issues....please, even if you have to visit emerg...get seen. If it spreads up to your kidneys the pain will be awful and take much more time to get under control.:sad1:

Can you call a pharmacist and get some suggestions? I'd feel better about you doing that before you take the alka-seltzer.

Call both and get the phone number for the nearest store with a clinic - then call those stores and make sure they can handle your specific complaint ('my' Minute Clinic can't because you'd have to walk through the store with the urine sample). The nurse on duty did recommend CVS-brand cystex until I could get to the doctor though and it helped.

But all these tips are only going to alleviate the pain. They're going to do little, if anything, about the infection. Do you really want to let it fester for at least three more days? Most ERs do triage - they're going to see someone who's in excruciating pain before they see someone who has a cold. Even if you do have to wait - that's a few hours today and you're on your way to being cured, vs. minimum of 72 hours before anyone even diagnoses you.

I swear by Azo tablets. They're over the counter, I get mine at Walmart. They're maybe $5-$8 a box. They have several types, the one I suggest for an existing infection is the pain relief one. It works like the prescription pills for pain/itching that turns urine orange, and it will temporarily stain the commode orange/yellow. It won't cure the infection, but it really helped with the pain for me. They also have some for yeast infections and some cranberry tablets to help avoid infection.

I saw a urologist for a while due to my chronic bladder infections. Here's what she told me: If you suspect you have an infection, you must get tested and treated as soon as possible. They can quickly spread to your kidneys which can lead to kidney damage if it gets bad enough. Cranberry juice doesn't cure an infection. It's really only useful before you get one as a preventative measure. The acid in the juice can help to keep the bacteria from sticking and causing and infection, but it won't cure one. You can do certain things to minimize the symptoms (over the counter meds like Uristat), but only antibiotics will truly cure it. Even if you think it's getting better, it won't go away without a full course of antibiotics.

I would recommend going to the ER if that's your only option. You don't want to wait on something like this. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!:)

good advice.. I had one last you also during a holiday weekend. Went to CVS and they wouldnt do anything for it. I ended up going to the ER which I hate to do

For the posters that said don't wait, go to the ER, just do it!!!!

One time I put off going to the walk-in clinic while I was on vacation. I knew better, but did it anyway. I'm hard-headed like that:rolleyes1.

Anyways, on the way home from vacation, just a few short days after the symptoms started, we stopped at our local ER so that I could get treated. Well, long story short, the infection was already in my kidneys and I spent the next 3 days in the hospital. If I would have just visited the local walk-in clinic while on vacation, I could have prevented this:headache:!

I agree with this 100%. Don't wait to get started treating the infection or it will spread to your kidneys. I'd rather sit in the ER for 8 hours today (bring a good book or two) than end up in the hospital for a few days.

I agree with others go to the ER or call around until you can find a walk in clinic! I also made the mistake of thinking I could wait until Monday one weekend. I ended up with a kidney infection so bad, I was violently ill. Seriously. 3 days later, I headed home and STILL was taking meds 3 months later, the infection would NOT go away. It was horrible. I was the kind of sick I could do without.

If you don't want to wait the 5 hours, maybe there is a walk in clinic in town near you. It is best to get it over with!

As someone who suffered with awful recurring UTIs (until I figured out what was causing them and how to prevent them) I will echo the advice of those who have posted before me. All the over-the-counter "remedies"/home remedies/cranberry juice in the world can NOT help you once you have a bladder infection or UTI. All they can do is mask the symptoms. If you wait 3 or more days without seeking treatment you can and will become VERY ill. The infection can damage your bladder or urinary tract and/or can spread to your kidneys and cause permanent damage. UTIs are some of the nastiest thing in the whole world, I am suffering from a distance along with you - I feel your pain.

Please go to a walk-in clinic in a neighboring town or to the ER and do what you need to do to get the help you need.

I suffer from bladder infections 1-2 times per year. Honestly, I would be getting in the car right now without caring how long it took me to drive to a walk-in clinic. You cannot wait until Tuesday. Cranberry juice never worked for me, but I have also been told to try that.
The only thing that ever works is a strong antibiotic.

Good luck, feel better! I hate those darn things!!
