I currently have a pay-as-you go phone with AT&T. The phone might be dead soon. I hardly ever use my phone anyway.

I geocache and store data on an old PDA that I have.

There is an app for Blackberry that would store my geocaching data. Is it possible to get a Blackberry, but just have a pay-as you go phone & data plan OR just have a phone plan? I don't even think I would use a data plan much.

I'm just trying to see if I can consolidate the 2 devices into 1.

I guess it depends on your carrier if they offer Pay As You Go. However, I don't think you would get the full benefit of a BlackBerry (& its services) without a data plan.

Yes, with AT&T you can have a Blackberry with a pay-as-you-go data plan. I had switched from a Nokia flip phone to the BB Pearl last August ($50 refurb with new 2-year contract) and didn't add the BB data plan until February when I upgraded DH & DD's phones. I added the regular data plan to DD's phone and the BB data to mine because my PPU was nearly the amount of the BB plan. Now I'm constantly using the plan to access my home email (while at work where it is blocked), GoogleMaps app, Weather.com app and Google Mobile app. are free downloads.

I don't really care that I wouldn't be using a Blackberry for all its services.

All I really need is a phone for emergencies; that can accept an SD card, and can run the Cacheberry app. Cacheberry only runs on Blackberrys.

Are there phones that run Palm Operating System like my PDA does? If so, then I could run the Cachemate app on it that I current use on my PDA.

All I'm really trying to do is consolidate devices if I'm going to need to buy a new phone anyway. I'm not really looking for more services ($$$$) than I already have since I don't need them.

I really don't even need a data plan. Honest. Everything I need for geocaching is on that SD card.

Palm has several phones. I have a Centro-I don't like it but I have to have it for work. They just released the Palm Pre which is more like an I-Phone. The centro doesn't accept a SD card though. I am not sure about the Pre. I liked my Blackberry much better then my Palm.

I know with Verizon you HAVE to have the data plan with a Blackberry.
