Blackbeard's Ghost (1968)
Edward Teach was one of the, if not THE most feared pirate who ever lived? Not according to this 1968 comedy starring Peter Ustinov, Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette and directed by 19 Disney film veteran and Disney Legend, Robert Stevenson. It's story of a newly hired college track coach (Jones) who finds himself in a Carolina coastal town and accidentally unleashes Blackbeard's ghost (Ustinov) while trying to win over a local female resident (Pleahette). Jones is the only person who can see Blackbeard so there are many predictable scenes when everyone thinks he's lost his marbles. But there are some definite laugh out loud classic Disney moments when Blackbeard helps Jones' character at track meet. For me, the first half of the movie is too big of a dull hump to get over before hilarity ensues. It was so boring to me, I had attempted to watch the movie twice before but couldn't get past the painfully slow open. The second half had me thoroughly entertained but not enough to give the film more than 2 out of 5 Jolly Rogers.
