It is just not my thing. I do not think that I have been to a black tie event other than wedding and prom (a long, long time ago). The owner of DH's company is having his 50th wedding anniversary and sent us an invitation. I realize that it is an honor to be invited, but to be honest, I dread it. As you can see from my signature, I am a football kind of gal...blues jeans, sweats, etc. As a matter of fact, I am dreading missing the Dallas vs. Philadelphia game tomorrow night to attend this party.
Anyway, I need advice from you fellow DIS ladies about my hair. Sure, I know that it is probably too late to do anything about it, but I just got to wondering if I need to wear my hair up. I have shoulder length hair. It is hard to do an updo really.
Here is my dress: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3089429?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=guidednav&keyword=women%27s+dresses+%3e+Adrianna+Papell&origin=searchresults
(BTW, DH would die if he knew about it being on sale now!!!!!!!)
Is it ok to have my hair down? Like I said, I do not normally attend things like this. I am not sure about what I should do.

I don't think you HAVE to wear your hair up, but I would, personally. I think it looks more dressy. I completely know how you feel. A couple years ago, my husband and I attended a Ball and Auction at Navy Pier in Chicago. It was a fund raiser for our kids' school. It was $100 a plate.

There were very big names there. One of the anchors from ABC 7 sat right behind me. I sat next to a movie producer and my husband sat next to the editor for Playboy. I was sooooo out of my element. I am from very rural Pennsylvania and felt very out of place. I found a very nice dress and had my hair professionally done ($50 for a hair style!!). I wore it up. I think it looked better with my dress.

I think you need to do what makes you feel comfortable. Good luck and have fun!

If you wear it down style it a different way than you normally do if thats possible. If you normally have it straight add a little wave or if its normally curly control the curl more with a curling iron. Basically had some pizzazz

Yes, I will be soooooo out of my comfort level! I am so nervous!
That is what I am thinking about.....paying that much for a hairstyle to be worn for a few hours. I guess I should check into it, though. I doubt my stylist can work me in with a day's notice. I hate the idea of going to a stranger to get my hair done, though.
SC Minnie, you live close to me. ( I am in Marvin area.) Do you have any ideas about places to get my hair done?

I think you should wear your hair the way you are most comfortable. It doesn't have to be up.

Your stylist may be able to work you in especially if you can go during the day. Worth asking. There has to be some places in Ballantyne. I go here in Ft Mill so not sure about your area. You may want to even check with the salon at JC Penney at Carolina Place. See if they have someone that does updo's well that has an opening. I would look into a larger salon with multiple stylists. I know not every hairstylist is good with an updo.

I don't think you have to wear it up at all. My oldest DD is getting married this year, having a black tie wedding and is not wearing her hair up - it's just not her. Her stylist recommended a "half-up" style for her:

Would that something like that work better for you? You could attempt something like it by yourself, but any salon could easily help you do it.

That is what I was going to recommend. Maybe with some pretty clips/combs (depending on how thick your hair is - I have a tough time with them, but find if I pull just a teeny bit of hair from the sides to the back it will work)

Have fun!

If you need a haircut (and can get an appointment), ask the beautician to style your hair too.

That's what I did when I went to a formal party last month. I told my stylist I was going to a party that night, and she styled and sprayed the heck out of my hair. When she got done, it was huge--several inches above my head.

That's not normally how I wear my hair, but it fit my clothes and the occasion. Combining the styling with a hair-cut is like a two-for-one at my salon.

I'm not much of a hair person so I can't help you there, but just wanted to say I like the dress very much!

If you are more comfortable with your hair down, then I'd wear it down...maybe find a sparkly barrette or clip to pull some of it back with..then it will be different than every day, but you will still be comfortable (and I'd rather buy a $5 barrette than pay to have my hair done)

First of all, GORGEOUS dress! As far as your hair is concerned, I would try to get an appointment for tomorrow but then I would try to experiment with it today if you have time. Try to put it up yourself, put it in hot rollers, straighten it, etc. If you aren't happy with anything you can do, go to the salon. If you are satisified with doing your own hair, cancel your appointment.

Good luck!

I have been to more than a few black tie events that required evening gowns and I never wore my hair in an updo. The only way to enjoy yourself is to be comfortable.

With that jacket I'd say updo, (no jacket you could do a hair down), however todays updos can be done very simple.

Take your hair and just twist it back and tack it down in the middle with bobby pins (it's okay if the front part is down in locks by your face and if the ends stick out from the pins in back like feathers or a birds tail) put a glittery hair bob in it and spray it in place. Style the front locks in loose curling iron waves and viola! an updo that is less formal but totally acceptable.

Go to google (not images just the regular page) and put in messy up do hairstyles and you'll get a ton of hits

don't be nervous - it will be an adventure!

up-do's are pretty easy...depending on the lenth of your hair. You could start with a ponytail and then use a curling iron to do barrel type curls and use bobby pins to put in place all around the ponytail, you could leave some hanging as well by your ears.

Have fun and let us know how it goes.

Thank you all so much for your help and kind words!
I just got home from having a mani and pedi. (My first since my wedding so I loved it!) I had to have a pedi because my shoes are the peep toe kind so one toe will be showing on each foot. After that I ran into Ulta and bought a few pairs of sparkly rhinestone clips/pins. My stylist was not able to work me in, but she recommended someone. I have an appointment at 2:30 tomorrow. She recommended that I do my hair part up and part down as suzannen suggested. I think that I will ask about the twists in the part up or back. DH said that they are taking pictures of each couple attending. Then they plan to send us the pictures on CD in a few weeks. I think that is a neat touch. I will try to post a picture when I get it.
Thanks so much everyone! You have made me feel better already!

Thank you so much!
I did not realize how hard it would be to find a dress. I went to so many stores and tried so many on! I was almost in tears several times! Honestly, it was just as bad as trying on swim suits for me!!!! I kept thinking that those types of dresses are made for 20 something year olds; their bodies fit into things like that, not mine. Once I found that dress, though, I was so relieved! I love the way it fits, and the gathering at the waist area camouflages so much! ;)

We go to multiple black tie events every year and I never, ever wear my hair up. I, too, have shoulder length hair and it never would occur to me to wear my hair up. That just is not me. You already are a little uncomfortable going to this thing so why amp up your discomfort level with a hairstyle that is foreign to you? That does not make sense. Wear the pretty dress, put on some make up, jewelry and go. Don't do too much outside your comfort level...then you will be miserable and worried and won't have a good time.

Have fun.

Love the dress and its color! :thumbsup2 I see that your stylist suggested a half up/half down. Good alternative to an updo.:thumbsup2 IMO, a bolero jacket and "messy" hair don't go together. It would take away from its elegant look.

Have fun!:thumbsup2
