When did the Black Pearl disappear from CC? I was disappointed it was not there.

Do you mean The Flying Dutchman? It has been gone about 3 years, maybe more.

It was definitely gone by Oct 11 as we were there with our friends and they were disappointed not to see it.

The last photos I saw of the Black Pearl was in Hawaii. They were debating where the movie would be shot, Australia or Hawaii. She is supposed to be either going to be sailed or deck shipped to the movie shooting location. While the present Black Pearl is a real ship......I think it would be overall safer to deck ship her if she going to Australia.

Didn't catch that.:o Black Pearl is the real ship they used for the movies. But the "ship" (really just a stage set) at Castaway Cay was the Flying Dutchman.

In the first movie the Black Pearl was a barge with the sailing ship stage built on top. The present Black Pearl was built on another sailing ship( HMS Sunset).

You are of course right the flying Dutchman was a barge with the set built on top , with the Port side partially open to permit camera angles and shooting during filming. IT was only a movie set and the weather finally beat her up and she was falling apart, so they broke her up.

it was moved some time (shortly?) before our Presidents Week sailing in 2011....soooo, between schmoos answer and mine, the exact date exists. Anybody that saw it at CC after that is delusional.....or had carried on too much alcohol. And THAT is probably why they changed their alcohol policy: too many unconfirmed Dutchman sightings!!!!:rolleyes1

I know it was just a prop and not meant to stand the ravages of time, but It would be great if they built a replica and replaced it. It would be a fun return. Maybe for the new movie....

The Story goes that DCL was looking for something fun to put into the CC lagoon. Someone mentioned that the Flying Dutchman (not the real Fly Dutchman, but that's another story) from the Pirate movies was sitting in Freeport, just racking up berthing charges. They called the movie producers and asked if they were going to use it again and if not could DCL have it. They were happy to end the berthing charges and said take it away!

I would love to feed you all a great tale of sailing the movie prop with Pirates in full regale!, but no........they simply chartered a tugboat and towed it to CC. They dredged out a hole in the sand and set it into it. It stayed there until whatever the correct date was, when she was dismasted and then towed out and around back behind the DCL berth and broken up. The pieces were set onto a barge and towed off to a scrap yard.

From what I understand, it was moved to a different part of Castaway Cay to be disassembled at some point. Not sure when it was finally disassembled, so I'm not so certain that someone would have had to have been delusional to still see it there.

yeah...it was around back, i believe....perhaps delusional was a strong word. maybe i should have said "confused"....thanks for the policing, there.
