Ok. What else does it have in common with "the South"? Political leanings? No. Demographics? No. It's odd to consider DC "the South" in this discussion. Ask any politician.

Because the Mason-Dixon has been historically considered the border between the southern states and the northern states.

Again, I said, "technically." I don't think many, in this era consider D.C. the south.

Totally serious. I need specifics. I need to know exactly what clothing is considered "thug."

I know Little Wayne has a bunch of hot mess tattoos on his face, which is NOT a look I would recommend if you need to get a job, but I am wondering what kind of clothes signify a "thug" apart from obvious gang insignia.

Like I said--I think what most people are referring to as "thug" is also referred to as "gangster" and I think you well know I am not talking about the Mob.

I don't give a rat's behind how someone dresses. My owns sons had to be told more than once to pull their pants up. And its not specific clothing but more the way a person wears it maybe? Did someone say that the Dallas or Orlando shooters dressed like thugs? I didn't see that they did.

The minute someone decides to be the arbiter of who is, and is not, racist - is the minute that person has decided to no longer try and discuss any real solutions. That's a scare tactic used only to try and coerce the feeble-minded to join their side of the discussion. It's easier - and sadly - more effective than really discussing the issues.

Sadly, it IS effective as we've seen on this thread. Constant name calling and someone profiling my family as white (WRONG) was why I decided to check out of this discussion. I especially dislike people calling others here "thinly veiled racists" if they don't agree with someone. So passively aggressive.

I specifically said physical use of force, not deadly use of force. People of color are, statistically, subject to more use of physical force in police interactions than white people.
That is not true. Statistically, white people are subject to more instances of physical force, greater levels of non-lethal force, and more deadly force than people of color.

If you have actual statistics to prove otherwise, please post them so we can be amused by their sources and methodology. Start at www.fbi.gov

Again, specifically. other than insignia, what are gangster clothes?

Other than gang insignia I do not know what "gangster" clothes look like. I know about gang colors and tattoos, and symbols and emblems, so if you are saying people wearing those type of things, yes, people should be on their guard. So if you are saying people that advertise gang affiliation, I agree.

I am from NJ. The mob are very much considered "thugs" around here. Actually, to people in this area, they are the original definition of "thugs."

thug
THəɡ/
noun
  1. 1.
a violent person, especially a criminal.
John Gotti fits this bill.

Gangsters around here would be member of the Blood, the Latin Kings, the Pagans, and the Warlocks. All have very distinct "colors" and insignia.

I look at it more like you do for "thugs". Thugs are generally the muscle used by the mob. Gangsters are mobsters from the '30s.

I guess as gangs take over the same criminal enterprises that the mob used to control - we need to revise our thinking.

And nobody that knows anything about MIAMI considers it part of the South!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Miami is many, many things -- Southern, it ain't!

O think we are actually making a point. The term "thug" is very non specific. To say someone could be considered a "thug" based on how they are dressed doesn't make any sense to me because "thugs" come in all shapes, sizes, ages, colors, and modes of dress. For me being a "thug" could range from someone in a suit to someone wearing very obvious gang insignia.

Fashion is entirely another thing, and in a lot of cases, unfortunate.

To say someone should expect to be treated in a certain way because of their particular sense of fashion is the same as saying a woman deserves to be sexually assaulted because her skirt is too short or her blouse too low. It is judging people on the superficial. It happens, but it is wrong, and it is one of the things that is causing the divide in this nation.

This is the DIS, so I will relate it back: How many threads have gone ugly because people have made the snap judgment that someone is just lazy because they are overweight and using an ECV? Or judging on someone's character based on the fact that they stayed in a "value" resort at WDW? Shoot, I remember one thread where a woman was handing out dolls to people who looked, to her, like they couldn't afford to buy souvenirs for their kids. I know that do to heat and melty ice cream, and running in every water source and climbing every rail my children have looked like rag pickers in WDW.

So many people here have been quick to jump in and call people out for those judgments but now we are being quick to say that it is okay to assume that someone is a criminal or potentially violent based on fashion.

It doesn't make sense.

Wasn't the line (Crockett asking Tubbs) from the Miami Vice pilot "You ever consider a career in southern law enforcement?"

That being said, I heard at least one person during my visit to the Miami area call it "North Cuba".

There are some things that certainly cause a lot of double takes. I saw one arm tattoo showing a small cartoon character carrying a disproportionately sized handgun. I suppose not necessarily gang insignia, but not something that most people wouldn't think of as innocent.

I've also heard of law enforcement gangs. There's several notorious ones within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept which have their own tattoos. I heard one features a gun. If a deputy is involved in a shooting, they add smoke coming out of the barrel.

Likening Miami to Cuba just shows that someone has no appreciation for the degree of diversification here. Miami is much more diverse, and much more sophisticated than that.

There used to be.
Yep. And Rhodesia, and Burma, lots of places use to be.

Actually, the correct name for a number of years has been Miami-Dade County. Prior to that, it was Metropolitan Dade County. Before the early 60's (I think), it was Dade County -- named after Major Francis Dade...and we all know what he's famous for, right?
