I'm in the process of planning DS's 1st birthday party :cool1: (okay...I've been planning for a long time but I thought that now was a safe time to ask a question w/o looking silly that it was so early. ) He'll be one on July 2nd and his party will be at 2pm on July 3rd. I already plan on having cake and ice cream, chips/dip, fruit tray, and m&m's since they're colorful. I would like to have one more thing, but I'm not sure what. I'm trying to avoid anything like BBQ since lots of people will have BBQ the next day on the 4th. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Turkey and dressing! Not many people will be having that the next day :)

Ok, so I wasn't much help.

Vegetable tray, cheese and crackers for your friends doing Atkins.

Denae

My daughter will be 2 on July 1st and I am having her party the same day (and same time). What about a couple of heros?

I thought about a veggie tray and sandwiches...that's definitely a maybe. :) Turkey and dressing...now that would be interesting! LOL! I never thought of chicken wings...that's a good one! Cheese tray...another one I didn't think of.

ARe you looking for meal ideas or snack ideas? As one who personally is a neurotic planner for my kids bday parties, I am telling you in advance...... something you don't have to attend to on the stove/grill/oven is best. I think I spent most of my DD's first bday (and probably DS's 1st also) in the kitchen being sure that my guests were well fed ( and I HATE to cook). For DS's second bday I got smart and got pizza!!

If you are looking for "snacks" and want something hot, try putting chicken wings in the crockpot. You can cook them in the oven ahead of time and just keep them warm in the crockpot. My family DEVOURS those honey bbq wings they sell at BJ's. But they are messy... buy lots of napkins. I also second the veggie tray and cheese tray idea.... never know who is on Weight Watchers or Atkins these days!!...................P

We're definitely looking for just snacks...the party's at 2pm so I'm assuming people will realize it'll just be snacks. The party will be outside so I also need to make sure it'll last in the heat we have down here!

LOL Dan...you wanna bring some Chicago pizza?;)

You could always have a cold cut platter made up at the grocery.
No fuss no muss;) And I wouldn't assume that people would not expect to be fed. You may want to add something on the invitation that says "snacks" and cake.

I agree with Tea Please. We usually have our kids parties at 2:00 and we always have a "meal". We usually start with munchies(chips dips, cheese & crackers, etc...) then we either get pizza or cold cuts & salads. And of course we end the party with cake and icecream.

Hmmm...I've never been to a 2pm birthday party and expected or had a "meal". Since we're inviting family and friends from the same area, I assumed they would know it's just snacks. Now I may have to rethink my invites.

We have had little finger sandwiches, chips, dip, queso. Pizza is usually big hit as well. If you have a Sam's or Costco around they have great finger foods--just heat and eat--like Buffalo chicken wings, mini egg rolls, etc.

Since it's at 2:00, I would think finger sandwiches or maybe a 7layer bean dip. How about meatballs or little sausages in a crock pot, no fuss no muss?!

I'm struggling trying to figure out what to serve at my dd's 3rd birthday party too. It will probably be during the dinner hour, so it won't be so hot.

When both of my daughters turned one I did something similar to what you are planning, this is what I had:

Veggie Platter
Fruit Platter
Cheese,keilbasa & cracker platter
finger sandwiches - I used different cookie cutters and cut out the bread with them...big hit with the kids!! I made egg salad, tuna fish and PB&J (of course!)
Cocktail franks in sweet & sour sauce - sauce is grape jelly with chili sauce in the crockpot, very easy and good!
Chips & dip
Chicken Wings
Baked beans - I make my own and its a big hit with my family, again just make in the crockpot, so easy!
Punch bowl - for the punch I use Ocean Spray Cranberry Raspberry, Orange Juice and Sprite. VERY GOOD!
Cake & Ice Cream

Good luck and happy birthday to that sweet boy of yours!

I did my 1st ds's first two birthday parties at 3pm & here's what I had both times:

Chick-fil-a nuggets tray
Fruit Tray
Veggie Tray
Chips & Salsa
Cake & Ice Cream

It was plenty!

:D You all are making me hungry!

I just wanted to second the idea of putting snacks and cake on the invite. I've done my parties at 2 and had people expecting a late lunch also. Luckily, I had gone overboard with the food so it wasn't a problem.

I also usually do a veggie tray, cheese and crackers, and also a fresh fruit platter (doing it youself is a lot cheaper than getting a pre-made one at the grocery store). The fruit is always the first thing to go ::yes:: .

You could get pizza, but just have them cut it into thin slices. Chicken wings also soulnd like a good idea, good for Atkins also. 7 layer bean dip is always a hit, just make sure you have sturdy chips.:D Pinwheeles are also a really good fingerfood, you can have your deli make them or make them yourself they're really easy. Just spread some onion and chive cream cheese on a tortilla and layer it with deli meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato then roll up and slice.
