DS is in the 4th grade and this is the first time I have had a note home requesting a donation for the teacher's birthday gift. Has anyone else experienced this before? I always give a gift at Christmas time and end of the year. I contribute to teacher appreciation and donating supplies and goodies throughout the year am I wrong to think this is a little much? I know I can chose to give or not give, and frankly I haven't decided yet. I was just wondering if I am just behind, is this the newest trend, or has this been something that has been going on for awhile that I was never aware of? Just curious.

Birthdays for teachers at my school are hit or miss...some room moms have a quick party for the teacher, with the students helping with the planning (and the kids love it). On my birthday this year, I opened the door & there were my room moms in the room with the kids shouting, "Happy Birthday". They had some small gifts & flowers for me.

Totally unexpected!! Aren't they so nice?

No one from my son's class has planned anything for his teacher's birthday. If the room mom does send a note home, I'm sure I'll contribute. My DS7 would want to.

It just might be the room mom who is organizing this. We've had requests for a small donation at the end of the year, for a teacher appreciation gift, but not for a b-day gift. (DD is in 6th grade BTW)

geT THIS----my dd's class took up $ for a HALF birthday for her teacher - simce her b'day falls @ a time when school is not in session! NOW THAT"S CRAZY if you ask me...& NOPE! we didn't give anything - don't much like her teacher so haven't given anything all year....

My girls just started K this year, so I don't have too much experience, but we don't even know when the teachers' birthdays are, and I have never been asked to contribute to a gift for them.

I would probably contribute if asked, though.
