I'm clueless when it comes to children :). My cousin (whom I've always been close to) is having a birthday party in a couple of weeks for her son, who's turning 1. I asked her what he wants (or what she wants for him) and/or what he needs and she says nothing, that my presence is enough. I do want to get him something, I just don't want to get her junk that just clutters up her house or closets, so what would be a good gift? TIA! :thumbsup2

Maybe ask if you can help in some way with the party? Maybe you could pick up / bring / pay for the cake? or maybe the paper goods?

Since you're close with his mom I'd go for books, savings bonds, clothes, a family membership to some kind of play place, park, museum, zoo or family admission to one of these types of places depending on your budget. If you didn't like his mom I'd say a musical instrument. LOL

I wish people would have saved thier money on the toys my kids were given for thier 1st birthday. Don't get me wrong, they played with them but got way too many.

I would have loved for them to get savings bonds or even just clothes.

Books are always a nice idea too, my kids always love them

Maybe a nice picture frame engraved with his first birthday information

My daughter received several savings bonds and I really appreciated those. Her birthday is really close to Christmas so it makes it even better since she gets a lot of toys for Christmas. It's nice to know she has those sitting in her piggy bank.

I agree on books. Especially if this is a first child. Books are expensive when you are buying diapers, etc and make a wonderful gift. To be on the safe side I will often include a gift receipt in case of duplicates.

You can often find great childrens books on the clearance rack at book stores and Costco has great prices on books.

Savings bonds, we actually requested that is all the grandparents gave our boys, at first they(GP) didn't like the idea but after a few gifts they finally got it, much better then t'oys/ clothes etc, but they were helping with their GC s college fund.

A big box of Cheerios! (with a savings bond inside) And don't wrap it, just put a big bow on it. I promise it will be his favorite gift. :cool1:

I agree that the savings bond is perfect! If you want to include a nice book great, it not the savings bond is just fine!

I was thinking summer toys would be fun. Ball, pail and shovel, bubbles (for parents to blow for him).

Fun book like the Cheerio Book-child or parent place Cheerios on the page.

We adopted our son right around Easter in 2002. My neighbor brought over a basket of baby food for him from jars to snacks and I loved it!
What about some baby snacks (cheerios, the gerber bars, puffs, etc,) and then some new sippy cups (some with straws, some with spout, etc.) or even some new themed utensils since he will probably be starting to feed himself more.

and books are always great options!

After 4 kids, I vote savings bond, or a membership to the childrens muesum if you have on nearby. We have a smallish one and its $40 for the year. Its AWESOME!

For a girl, I'd get My Pal Violet. For a boy I'd get My Pal Scout. My 6 month old daugher loves hers, my 7 year old daughter loves to steal it. :-) I love that at its programmable, you can enter in songs that the dog sings, the kids favorite color, animal and food and their name. Very nice.

Bathtub toys! Crayola makes cool little tabs you can put in the bath water to turn it colors (like $4 at Target). also anything that floats or squirts
