Monday 21st May – We leave for the cruise.
Damn jet lag again, we’re awake by 5.10am. So Rick gets changed and goes and uses the free Internet service offered by the hotel. When he gets back we pack up or cases ready for our departure for Pier 35 later this morning. When we arrived on Saturday one of the handles on one of the cases was badly bent, so we need to buy a cheap screwdriver to remove the handle.
So once we are ready, we head out for some last minute purchases. I check my email before we leave the hotel – nothing important. Starbuck provides a nice coffee and a muffin, plus a rather snazzy green flask. Just right for taking hot drinks on our excursions. At Walgreen’s, we find a screwdriver and take it back to our room to remove the handle.
Once the suitcase is repacked, Ghirardelli’s beckons. I have a Domingo and Rick has a Cable Car. We must be mad, but there are others in the shop doing the same thing. We have time, once we have finished, to walk along the Wharf and take some pictures. At this point we notice that the Dawn Princess is docked at the pier, so it’s a great opportunity for photos.
We collect our cases and head down to the lobby. The receptionist gets us a cab and within 10 minutes we are at Pier 35, and a Princess Porter collects our cases. Check in takes about 35 minutes, which is extremely quick. Once on board, Rick purchases his soda card and then we climb up one deck to deck 6 and our room. We open our door and wonder where the have put the brooms. It’s definitely on the small side, but we will soon get used to it.
Lunch is at the Balcony Grill – Hamburger and Chips. Yummy, and then we take the 2pm tour of the ship so that we can get our bearings of the ship.
Muster is a 3.15pm. Our muster station is the Wheelhouse Lounge and we arrive with everyone else with our lifejackets. There is no roll call, which is strange, but a very thorough safety demo and instructions on what to do in an emergency.
The Dawn sets sail at 4.15pm and the weather is gorgeous, bright sunshine but a bit chilly. A helicopter flies passed and there are lots of sailboards trying to catch us up. As we pass under the Golden Gate Bridge, there are people waving to us and the Ship sounds off her horns.
The sea is starting to get a bit rough so we head inside to see if our luggage has arrived. As we walk down the stairs, there is an announcement from the bridge that the gusts of wind across the deck is 50 knots and that we need to take care when on deck. Our cases have arrived and we unpack, but we are both feeling a bit seasick, so we head up to deck 7 for a breath of air. It is so windy we don’t stay long, so we head back down to our cabin for a lie down. No dinner for us tonight, we need to take a nap. We set the alarm for 9.30pm, so that we can catch the 10.00pm show in the Theatre
The show is cut short because of the rough seas and we are back in bed by 10.45pm. It has been a great start to the cruise, even if the sea has been a bit rough.
