Wednesday 6th June 2007 Road Trip
We woke to the most beautiful sunny day and blue skies. It couldnt be better for our road trip.
We are out of the door by 10.30am and our first stop is San Clemente. This is a lovely little town with very Mexican looking buildings, but the shops are very posh. We walk down one side of the street and then cross and make our way into the library at the bottom on the street. They have free Internet access and we can use it, as long as we register. An hour later, emails done and a couple of books purchased from the charity bookshop next door, we head back up the other side of the street.
I step into a small gift shop and make a few purchases and once we have purchased a drink from the nearby café, we start our journey along Pacific Coast Highway 1.
There are some stunning coastal views along the way, and we make a brief stop at Crescent Bay. The view is spectacular, once you have made your way through the charming little garden. There are Sea lions just off shore on a small rock formation.
Back in the car, we continue on to Long Beach and as the journey progresses the views of the Pacific become more industrial with offshore oilrigs and tankers dotted along the coast.
Lunch is a brief stop in an InnOut burger bar. Its quite good, with a very simple menu only 3 choices.
Finally at about 2.30pm we reach our destination The Queen Mary at Long Beach. The ship is very shabby looking and has been converted some time ago into a hotel. There is a Russian submarine moored along side her. We didnt go on-board, just looked around outside. There are a few souvenir shops, but nothing else. We decide to call it a day, half-an-hour later and start our journey back.
We make a quick stop at Huntington Beach to take a couple of pictures of all the lovely kites that are being flown.
Laguna Beach is our next stop for ice-cream (which was especially nice) and a coffee from Starbucks.
We are home by 6.30pm with bagels in hand for breakfast tomorrow.
Alexis has cooked up a storm all afternoon and we have an Italian feast for our last meal with her and Jose.
Finally at 11.00pm, we say goodnight to Alexis and Jose and finish off what packing we can do tonight. The rest will wait until tomorrow
