Hi out there! My DD will turn 8 while we are in Disney. I was wondering if ordering a birthday cake would be a good idea. I know they sometimes give a cupcake if you have a birthday button. I guess I'm just a horrible tightwad mommy but as long as we sing happy birthday and she blows out a candle isn't that pretty good? Anyone have any experiences to share?

We paid for an anniversary cake once. We ate about two bites of two pieces of the giant 6" cake - I swear their 6" is more like a 10" cake. Anyway, we took our bites and asked the family of five next to us if they'd like the cake for their kids. They happily accepted.

For us - that was a waste. Especially an anniversary.

Fast forward 6 months when we're down in Disney for my sons second birthday. We had a reservation for Chef Mickey's and I talked to several CM's to assure me that there would at least be a cupcake. We discussed a cake, but the CM's agreed with my logic. It's a buffet, he'll get a cupcake and we'll sing to him, what more do you need?

There are a LOT of beautiful cakes out there - we thought ours was gorgeous for our anniversary, but we just couldn't spend that kind of money to waste. I'd rather buy an extra gift for my son so he has something to show for it. That's just me though. Lots LOVE the cakes, and that's great for them! :thumbsup2

You need to do what feels right for you and your daughter. Just wanted to share what we did.

I would be interested in hearing what others have to say as I myself am asking myself the same question. If we do order a cake it will be for just me, DD and DH and it seems like we will have tons of cake left and that to me is just wasteful.......but yet the whole idea seems nice......I just don't know.

Last year we were at the Polynesian for my DH birthday and our 15th Wedding Anniversary. It was me, DH and DD (11). I surprised DH with a birthday cake delivered to our room. We munched on the left over all week. It stayed very fresh in the frig. For our anniversary I surprised DH with choc covered strawberries again delivered to our room. We didn't have any ADRs we are more CS people.

Now this year we are Celebrating DD (12) early 13th B-day. We are staying at the Contemporary. I am surprising her with Monorail (white choc) delivered to our room one afternoon and choc covered strawberries (if they do at Contemporary). We do have a couple ADrs this year (Character breakfast and lunch) and I think a cake would be too much.

They will write Happy Birthday on the plates with the strawberries so it makes it more special.

Interesting thread.....this is a question DH and I have been struggling with as well. Our January trip is in celebration of our DS's 13th birthday, and we just can't decide on whether or not we should have a cake. There's just the 3 of us, and we're on the dining plan (meaning dessert included for both our CS and TS meals each day). We all have a sweet tooth, but this may take us over the top!!

His b-day dinner will be at Chef Mickeys, where he'll hopefully get a cupcake and of course there's the dessert buffet. Can't imagine feeling like eating cake by the time we find our way back to the resort after the park closes. Yet its his birthday......I can't imagine NOT having a cake either!! It goes against my parental instincts!!

Oh what to do, what to do? :confused3

Funnily enough, I don't think DS will care either way. He just wants to make sure he can get his hair gelled at the barber shop in some freaky colour!!! Don't you just love teenagers? :rotfl:

We ate at Coral Reef Oct 07 for my BD, had the best server ever. My DH had ordered b-day cake for me, it was beautiful, personalized and of course drew attention to us. We were also on the DP, so our server boxed up our DP desserts and the cake leftovers and we had very elegant snacks for watching Illuminations that night!

Beginning planning for Oct 2009 trip started this week! :cheer2:

I'm having the same dilemma. We are celebrating our son's 7th birthday while we are in Disney. His real birthday is the next week, the day before Thanksgiving so we probably won't have much of a celebration. We are doing the dining plan and will have dessert with our meal. We are staying at WL.

Funny I was just looking to discuss this.. last year it was son's birthday (turning 7) I can't imagine a birthday without a huge over the top cake (cakes are my hobby). But my son doesn't even like cake, and for us in the end we asked him and he said he didn't want one. I of course made the big three tiered one for his birthday party when we got home!! The cupcakes in the restaurants looked great when they came out and he was happier to just have a scoop of ice cream. For me it was about him having the candles to blow out kwim? Just it worked out great letting him pick his own desserts and having the cupcakes for the candle!
Now this year we will be there over my husbands birthday.. he loves cake and we will have an extra person with us.. I have planned a special dinner but I am still on the fence about a cake..

my DH and I celebrated our 25th anniversary at Disney last month. I was on the fence about ordering a cake. I ended up not ordering the cake and I am so glad! We never would have eaten itm even being in a villa with a fridge.

I liked the idea better than we would have enjoyed the reality, IYKWIM

I am glad we did not get it. :hippie:
