Birthday Cake Questions

Hi Everyone! We will be in WDW on my birthday (yay!) and I am considering ordering a cake for one of our meals. I have read all the cake information on several websites, so I have a pretty good handle on my options and prices.

My first question is this: which of these meals would be best for a cake?
  • On my actual birthday: dinner at Captain's Grille with DH, DD, and my parents
  • The day after my birthday: dinner at Kona with just DH
  • A couple days later: dinner at 1900 Park Fare with DH, DD, and my parents
Another question - and maybe I'll find this in the cake chatter thread, but I haven't even begun digging through that - has anyone done this with a gluten free cake? And if so, how was it?

Final question - we have DDP. Therefore, we'll get dessert with all these meals anyway. Is it even worth it to order a cake or should we just stick with the desserts we already get? If I do order a cake, do any of these restaurants allow you to sub something else (i.e. an appetizer or a side) for the dessert? (I haven't had DDP in years and can't remember all the rules.)

Thanks!

It seems like it would be more fun to have everyone enjoy the cake with you so I would vote for either Captain's Grille or 1900 Park Fare.

As far as substituting something for the dessert since you'll have a cake, some TS restaurants now have an option to replace dessert with an item of the restaurant's choosing. It won't be something that is on the menu - most often it has been a small side salad, a cup of soup or a veggie. You will not be able to choose an appetizer from the menu.

If a cake to celebrate your bday is important to you, go ahead and indulge! The best cakes (that I have seen) come from the Contemporary and then GF kitchens. But again, if you want it FOR your bday, I say get it ON your birthday

(My personal preference would be enjoy the desserts that come with dinner and take the cake $$$ and buy myself a lovely gift :))

Another vote here for letting everyone enjoy the restaurant's own desserts. Your party can sing HB to you if that floats your boat, but I'd let everyone have the dessert of his or her own choosing. They're on vacation.
