Has anyone mentioned this yet? I've heard these weren't very good - maybe Sara Lee's version will be an improvement?

From Jim Hill Media:

"Every possible avenue for cost cutting / increasing revenues at the resort is now being explored. Take – for example – the birthday cakes that you can request at WDW’s sit-down restaurants. These six inch beauties (Which Disney charged $12.50 for) used to be baked right on property over at the Contemporary and the Boardwalk.

Well, no longer. In order to save money, the Mouse has now farmed out production of WDW's birthday cakes to Sara Lee. Which Disney is using an excuse to jump the price of these cakes from $12.50 to $21.00."

The cost of flour has gone up substantially in the last 6 months alone. The prices of bagels here in NY have almost doubled in the last few months. Considering that the price has not doubled I would have to guess that Disney is saving consumers some money but doing what they did.

I always thought those cakes were an amazing price for WDW. All good things must come to an end.

does that mean the mini castle cakes that were previously $25 are now going to cost $50???!!! :scared1:

that's some expensive buttercream frosting!!!

From the way the article is worded, only the pre-made cakes are going up because they now come from an outside source.

But then I wonder, if you can get a custom cake made for $25, why would you even bother with a frozen Sara Lee cake (unless it's cuz you didn't plan ahead...)?

I work in a bakery, and the previous poster who mentioned the cost of flour is absolutely right. Ours went from less than $10 a bag to now about $25 for a 50lb. bag. The owners of the bakery are cutting back on everything, advertising, gift certificates, etc. to make up the difference so that they can keep everyone employed.

I guess I need to make a phone call tomorrow. I need to know what the difference in price for a 8" cake! OP, thanks for the info!:thumbsup2

How weird. We got a 6" cake for my DS's 8th birthday on July 4th. It was $12. It wasnt good either, we threw most of it away and I drove over to the publix the next day because he was so sad that his birthday cake "was the worst one he ever had". :( Disappointing for Disney! Wasn't just him-- two adults decided it wasnt worth the calories for even a tiny piece-- too many really good options elsewhere!

Sorry, I just left a message about this on the Birthday/Anniversary cake thread.

Arg! Double the price for a frozen cake? So happy that Lurky and I have already had our weddings - guess we got lucky:thumbsup2

$21? I didn't think Sara Lee was all that good in the first place. Will the other cakes be the same increase?

That custom cake sounds good. Hopefully some of these will still be made onsite...but I couldn't imagine an 8" at $30 ever selling.

Ok I just called priving dining and asked about the price increase. The CM told me that after July, 13, the prices will increase, so all the orders placed before that date will stay at its orginal prices. The 6 inch will go to $21.00 and the 8 inch will go to $32.00.

Does anyone know what the 10 inch will be going to? I guess I will call and place my order soon to lock into my price. I certainly hope they honor it.

I think the price they are charging is ridiculous. The former price for the 6 inch was fair. One month ago we were in Disneyland and I ordered a customized 10 inch birthday cake at Goofy's Kitchen. Cost? $23.50. Eight inch would have been $18. I guess those of you who think the price increase for WDW cakes is appropriate think Disney is losing money at those prices? Riiiiight, they aren't running a charity.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Just like they want to get out of the stroller business, WDW has, for whatever reason, decided they want to get out of custom cakes. By pricing it so high that only the most determined will be willing to pay, they decrease their volume. Less work for the bakery. (I am talking about the 8 and 10 inchers here.)

As I understood it, there was the 6-inch frozen cake that Disney made and would give you at a restaurant without pre-ordering, and then there was a 6-inch custom cake that you order in advance and isn't frozen and tastes good (:cutie: ).

I thought only the 6-inch frozen cake was going up in price and being outsourced. Since they're apparently raising custom cake prices, too, will they now be out-sourcing them too?

Well, I fell for it. My son said he wanted a birthday cake, so I had no choice. I ordered the 6" on Saturday but when I found out that it will be a frozen cake, I had my doubts. Not to mention, when I called on Saturday, the CM took the order and asked me what flavor cake I wanted along with the frosting and filling. I told him I wanted everything chocolate. So when I called this morning, the CM told me that all 6" cakes were vanilla and were all frozen. So naturally, with the price increase, I went ahead and changed the order to an 8" chocolate cake.

I understand the price change in a way. The cost of milk and other dairy items are rising, I can understand it in a way.

An excellent question! Only time will tell ...

Bummer that there isn't even a flavor choice for the frozen kinds.
