One trend I have noticed is families who are staying on property (at one of the Resorts) are decorating their hotel windows - putting up "Happy Birthday" banners or their child's favorite characters. You can search the Internet and gets TONS of ideas for decorating the window. Doesn't cost much at all, and is really fun for kids.
When our daughter was 10 (and just on the verge of growing up and losing that sweet innocence of childhood) we went to WDW for her birthday. On the morning of her birthday, I got up early and added a bit of Magic to the room - on the nightstand, I sprinkled "fairy dust" that Tinkerbell left, and again on the vanity in the bathroom. On the mirror, I taped a message that I had printed out and home and brought in my suitcase. I made it look like it was on "fairy stationary" and it was also very sparkly! I even sprinkled a bit of glitter just outside the door to our room on the sidewalk. We brought our own "happy birthday" banners from home (those cut out letters that are pre-strung together) and some crepe paper. Cost for all of that was less than $7
We spent the day at MK, and the Magic continued. We also threw a few pennies into fountains for birthday wishes (you have to turn around and throw those over your shoulder backwards LOL), and when we ate lunch at The Plaza, the staff brought out a birthday cupcake, and fussed over her - every one of them stopped by the table to wish her happy birthday.
As the day progressed, we took TONS of pictures and we even had a little "birthday photo shoot" where she stood in front of the castle and did all the crazy poses she wanted to.
Along the way, it seemed like a thousand people said "Happy Birthday Emily!" to her, and she didn't stop smiling all day! Because it started with Magic, all day long she looked for - and found - the magic on her own!
You have to remember something... what is Magic to you and I as adults is VERY different that what is Magic to a child. Her memories of the day will be fully influenced by YOUR attitude (and the others traveling with you). If you keep telling her what a wonderful day it is, and how much fun it is to have a birthday at Disney World... she will look around and see Magic everywhere.
I promise.
It's easy to go to WDW and spend (literally) a small fortune on "experiences". But the best days our family has - every time - are the days when we just go, and enjoy *being there*. Together, as a family, we find and make our own Magic. Those days, those memories, are what brings me back to Disney again and again.
Don't get caught up in grand gestures or experiences - just focus on the smile on your sweet little Princess, listen to her laughter, watch her face light up with joy. You'll all have the best birthday day ever!
I'm no expert. Just another mom who is leaving in 20 days to celebrate our daughters 21st birthday at WDW. Every one of them has been Magical!
