We haven't flown with our daughter since she was 4 and now she is 7, do we need to have her birth certificate with us to prove who she is? I can't remember what we did before. Thanks

No need for a birth certificate. I have been flying with my girls since they were little and I've never once had to carry any proof of who they are (at least not within the US). My oldest is now 17 and even on our latest flight to Disney last month, no one asked for her license...I assume it's because she is still a minor. Now if you're flying abroad, you would obviously need a passport.

Not if you are traveling domestic, under 18 does not require ID. Unless she had some kind of child fare where you need to prove her age.

Nope, but they have a way of asking. What they did with my daughter (at my home airport and at MCO) is ask her what her name is and what my name is and who I am to her. At my home airport, they also asked her what her brother's name is (he's 22 months).

At MCO, the guy called my son by his name to see if he would look at him.

My son turned right towards the guy when he heard his name. My daughter wasn't paying much attention and kept looking around and hesitating with each answer. I was like "speak up girl". :rotfl:

When our kids were young we always traveled with there Birth certificates and a recent photo(dated) of them with us at home or wherever................true,you don't HAVE to....but with all the odd stuff that can happen traveling.......it's a simple thing to do and bring them.

Your post has made me curious. What "odd stuff that can happen traveling" that would have been avoided by having a birth certificate along for the trip has actually happened?

Thanks.

Well off the top of my head.....in any emergency/accident/lost child/stolen child/ hospital visit...involving police or other goverment or hospital personal etc.,with the bc and the photo there is no question you are the parents of the child.....without proof.......police or other goverment officals may want to hold you all until they are sure.....may not let you near your child in the hospital etc........

We never had to use them, but we also had the peace of mind that if needed the proof was with us and not in a drawer at home.

I've traveled alone with my grandkids several times (and in fact will be flying to WDW with my 3 1/2 y/o grandson in Feb). I've never carried their birth certificates, but what I do is have a notarized letter from their parents saying I am allowed to travel with them to and from where ever I'm going and the dates we'll be traveling (with a few days added onto the end in case of delays) and that I can obtain medical help for them if needed. I also have their insurance cards with me. With my eldest grand daughter I make sure I have a separate notarized letter from both her dad and her mom, since her parents are divorced. I've never been asked for anything, nor have the kids ever been questioned about why they are with me. From my age, it's obvious I am not their mother.lol

only time that birth certif is needed if child is under 2 and lap flying. over that and under 18 nothing needed. had no problems with grandsons who are different color than me while mom had to be taken to separate area to be cleared to fly because of med issues. we did not go thru line together, could not.
