I just had a baby and am getting ready to apply for his birth certificate (I sense a trip to WDW in the air....). I want to make sure we order the correct one to get us through the border.

There are a few types of birth certificates I can apply for. Do I need the normal one that just states the place, date, and name of child (short) or do I need the long form which would include my name and my husbands as well as our places of birth? I think the cost is $26.50 versus $32.00. Thanks.

he's going to need a passport, and for that you need a long form:) The long form will also get you through the border...

More importantly,
:flower: Congratulations!!

I've always gotten through the border with just the kids regular (short) version .. do I need passports for the kids now?

Congratulations on your baby :) what did you have?

Hi as a TA I would recommend passports for your kids and since passports will be mandatory after Dec31/05 you might as well get them. As for birthcertificate I just got our passports for my kids and I only had the short formed one and they were no problem. The only time you may need the longer one with parents names on it is if your not with the Bio father of the kids but then you also need special noterized letter from father to ok you taking the kids across the boarder . I hope that helped you . :)

I was able to use short-form BC's for my kids passports with no problem. If you and your DH have/had different last names when your kids were born, they will definitely require the long-form when/if you ever go to get passports. The long-form ones are just a pain to travel with because they don't tuck nicely into your wallet ;)

If I were doing it all over again, I would order long-form BC's and get passports for my kids for travelling. I said ages ago that the gov't should just up the price to $40 and provide both formats when applying.

Passports are not yet mandatory. You should be okay with a birthcertificate. We went on a trip in January and all we needed was a BC.

This is NOT legal advice but I would suggest: a long form one and a passport for travelling, and a short form one for general use. Then again, I'm fond of paperwork and have a low tolerance for hassles related to ID (an occupational hazard, I think).
The children's passports are cheaper for younger children but expire sooner. that's to help keep the photo and description current.

I had heard that a passport wouldn't be mandatory until Dec 31st 06
Anyone know for sure?
Thanks.

Do I now need a passport to travel to the United States?

Though passports are the document of choice for travel, Canadian citizens do not currently require a passport to travel to the United States. However, Passport Canada encourages Canadians who are considering travelling outside Canada to obtain a passport, as it is the most widely accepted proof of Canadian identity and citizenship.

On April 5th, the United States Government announced the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requiring all visitors to and from the Americas, including Canadian citizens, to present a passport or other accepted secure document (still to be determined by the United States) to enter the United States by December 31st, 2007.

The WHTI will be implemented in three phases as follows:

December 31st, 2005 - All citizens (including Canadians and Americans) transiting in the United States en route to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central or South America will require passports

December 31st, 2006 - All citizens (including Canadians and Americans) traveling by air or sea to, from or through the United States will require passports

December 31st, 2007 - All citizens (including Canadians and Americans) traveling by air, sea or land to, from or through the United States will require passports

So basically you will require one by Dec31 2006 for air travel to the States and by Dec31 2007 for travel by car.

This is not correct...if the biological father has a different last name than you (ie common law husband & father of your child) then you will need a long form to get a passport for your child. For example dh and I were not married when we had ds--he is my sons father but we still had to have the long form-absolutely. Only on the long form do they list the names of both parents.

I am glad we have some time to get passports for the kids :sunny: . With three kids (and mine and husbands expiring before December), I was not looking forward to paying close to $400.00 for 5 passports. I will definately get ours renewed and rely on the kids birth certificates to get us threw the border (we will be driving to New England, then getting on a flight to Orlando) this Fall (hopefully- still have to "mention" it to hubby - :p ).

As for what birth certificate to order, I think I will order the short one and allow enough time when applying for the passport to order the long form if they require it. Seems as though the short one will get us threw the border until then. :goodvibes

SerinaEmily, I had a boy. He is the proud little brother of two older sisters - who sometimes confuse themselves with being his mother!! Poor boy. :teeth:
